Dennis, thank you so much for your informative videos. I was able to rebuild my father's old Olympic which was a small Penn copy back in the day. Unfortunately now I'm addicted to buying eBay Penns and rebuilding them. Don't know why there's something so special about clicking a lever and spinning a handle but there is! @@2ndChanceTackle Help. Upon disassembly, I discover the reel gear is frozen to the shaft. As it is, there is no way to reassemble. I need to figure a way to remove the reel gear. It has a small collar that moves slightly down to the reel, but it can't move up and over the teeth. Does this collar have anything to do with removing the reel gear? I have soaked it with WD-40 and will try it again in the morning. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for sharing your years of knowledge Dennis! Great teaching. I have some Penn jiggmaster reels from the 80's and 90's, a 4/0, 6/0 and a 555 Fast Retrieve. Did a lot of fishing with them with my Dad and son. Getting the itch to maintain them myself for my own satisfaction and sentimental reasons, also hoping to fish the East Cape, Baja in Mexico this summer with my son. Just need to get over the fear of the unknown and a little more encouragement to do it. Keep up the great work and sharing your knowledge. Regards, John C

Hey Dennis, Your vid's are very helpful. I've been working on a 114H. This is a 'long-shot' request. I've been using this vid, 'step-by-step', I think to re-assemble the unit. I had to replace the 'flat' spring like you displayed in the vid. I've done this 50 times and I've missed something. I can't get the handle properly operate when engaged and 'free lever' engaged. Need idea on what to look at. Thank you for any pointers.

It sounds like you have the A/R dog trapped between the main gear and the bridge and not riding on the teeth of the gear sleeve. Take the A/R dog out of the equation to test. Put the reel back together without the A/R dog and spring. Does it work properly? If it does, you need to work on the A/R set up. You can watch the video in this link to see if it is more helpful. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bLZgobtlya7Jdas.html If your reel handle still does not turn without the A/R dog installed, then you have a different problem - Dennis

Good video, where do I buy drag washer to increase from 20lb. to maxima drag for my Senator 6/0?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure which drag configuration you have. If you have the 7 washer set, that is about the max you will get on drag. If you have the older 3 washer set, then you can replace with the newer configuration. Check with Pennparts.com, which is now Mysticparts.com. You can call or email them from the site and they should be able to help with the best recommendation. Thanks for asking - Dennis

I recently acquired this exact reel and just finished putting it back together with this video as my guide, thank you for being so generous with your experience and knowledge. found the plastic peg on the handle side plate (#1) that the eccentric jack (#11) sits on was broken, also the reel side of the pinion, the slot that engages the reel has a taper which looks like damage to me, is there supposed to be a taper to help engage the reel? Again thanks for sharing
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 жыл бұрын
If you are asking about slot in the gear, there is a taper. Take the gear and sit it on the spool shaft to make sure the fit is tight. If not, it would need to be replaced. If that is not the reference, please send me a picture to my email 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com and I will try to help. Thank you - Dennis

Hi, i recently got 2 penn senator 6/0 "114H" as a gift from a neighbor....the intern mechanism looks in good shape and they work just fine. But the outer part of the reel have some corrosion and both have the left inner and outer rings broken but the side plate is intact. i want to repair them but am having issues finding the left outer and inner rings (8 holes) online... I was wondering if i could use the newer model's rings (5 holes) and drill the missing holes to make it martch my reels? I dont know if the newer model rings match the dimentions of the older reel side plates.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 жыл бұрын
Try asking the folks at mystic parts.com. They may have the replacement rings as they are an authorized Penn Parts distributor. If they don't have the parts, they could also advise on the suitability of drilling holes in the other piece. I think it can be done, but best to check with the pros - Dennis

Dennis, what is the correct handle and handle nut for this reel? I have one exactly the same that was on an electric reel and im wanting to use it as a manual reel. On pennparts.com there are listings for a few different handles, two different handle nuts and not a listing for the handle nut set screw. Any advice would be great.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 6 жыл бұрын
The Senator has had a lot of changes over the years and the handle is one of them. I believe all handles fit the reel, because the gear sleeve is still the same. The base part numbers you will need are 24-114 - handle, 24-116 Handle screw, 23a-60 handle lock screw, and 8-114 tension spring. Since there are so many versions of the Senator 6/0, I recommend calling Penn Parts at telephone 609-296-1300. They are the experts, very friendly, and will help you determine the right parts that you need as long as you have the reel in hand to know what version you have. Thanks for asking - Dennis

@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 3 жыл бұрын
I suspect that you are holding the side plate down and trying to put the bridge in on top of it. The drags will slip out that way. Try holding the side plate and 90 degrees and installing the bridge vertically or even tilt the bridge so that it is facing upwards. That will also hold the drags in place. Watch some of my Jigmaster or Long Beach videos - the installation process is the same and it may show you a different view of how to install these - Thanks for asking - Dennis

just wondering whether you can assist ...small gap between spool and body on a Penn Senator ..were line sometimes gets through and jams the spool...any ideas how i can prevent it..or close this gap ..screws are all fastened tight? Cheers Ed
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 4 жыл бұрын
Yes - Have you tightened the spool adjusted bearing on the non gear side plate? Turn it clockwise and that will take out a lot of side to side play in the spool. Do not tighten it completely. Once it is tight, back it off about 1/4 to 1/2 turn. If you have don that and you still have a gap, then you have a broken bearing in the gear side plate. That is the nut directly behind the handle and in line with the spool shaft. If that is the case, it would need to be replaced. - Dennis

very good job,q i took a 6/0 apart the pinion shaft was loose in the bridge plate, why wood that happen
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 жыл бұрын
The shaft rides on the bridge post. It is soft metal and the internal diameter will wear with use and wear will be quicker if it is not oiled as it is metal on metal. If that side to side play is the loose you are describing, then you need to replace the gear sleeve. If the bridge post is loose and wobbling, that is because it is peened onto the bridge. There is no fix to that. The bridge assembly needs to be replaced. Take the gear sleeve off by removing the pin and check both and let me know what you find. Thanks for asking - Dennis

How do you take of the stack / post were the drag washers go looks like you take out the little pin any help would be awesome does not turn freely
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is a pin below the treads on the gear sleeve that holds the piece to the bridge post. You need to push the pin out and then pull or lever the gear sleeve off. Be careful if you lever it as it is soft metal. This part does clog up as grease and oil dry. It needs to be cleaned as part of the service. If you want to see how to remove it, watch my Jigmaster anti-reverse video I just published. It shows how to remove the sleeve. The Senators and Jigmasters and most other Penn reels have the same set up. - Thanks for asking - Dennis

I am always amazed at the terrible practices that are shown in these videos. The reuse of the brake lining asbestos drag washers is a bad idea. Even if you do use them they do not get drag grease. There is a kit available to change the drag washers from 3 asbestos to 5 HT-100 or 5 Carbontex washers. All parts, screws, should be greased first before putting them in.
