Digging into the first of my 2 Jigmasters. What a pleasant surprise to not have to quibble with the anti-rev dog spring!. When I first saw it I thought it was loose and just stuck in the excessive grease, then I realized it was actually in a fixed position...how nice! So, I decided it was time to go to the video and see what the guru had to say about it. As always...

Thanks very much for the maintenance video. Just bought my first saltwater reel at a second-hand shop. Since I know nothing about anything (to do with fishing) I now know where to start. I love tinkering with things. Next I need a pole and a hook & some bait to give this a try. Maybe a sinker and a float? Recently retired, so it's time to do some fishing. I hope the gov't isn't going to make me pay for some kind of license to catch my dinner.

Just acquired a MADE IN PHILA. PA PENN JIG-MASTER NO. 500 with burgundy side plates, and a burgundy synthetic/plastic spool (for fresh water, I presume) from a thrift store in Florence, OR (Pacific Coast). External condition is good, and functional operation appears normal, but I have not yet disassembled it for internal inspection and maintenance. I appreciate the helpful resources you've made available. Thanks!

The plastic spool was made so that you can cast the reel farther. It can be used in saltwater or fresh. the spool is lighter than the metal one so there is less resistance and it spins faster resulting if farther casts. Thanks for the note - Dennis

One of the charter boats I work with, uses Jigmasters with their standard rod rental rig. They take a lot of abuse. Most of the failures are related to daily use without a lick of maintenance. They are work horses that keep going and will last for a long time with a little TLC.

Thanks for the video. I bought a new old stock jigmaster 500sl with original box, paperwork, grease and tool. which i believe has the "anniversary spool" (red aluminum) i guess you would say 2 years ago and bought some carbontex drag washers for it. Going to california next month to fish and this video really helped out with getting it all ready to go.

I think casting with the conventional reel and a suitable rod that is matched for your reel defines pure fishing. It is the way I was taught over 50 years ago, using an Ocean City reel and a 9 foot surf pole on the beach. I'll take this over a spinning reel any day! Thanks for the video. I have the exact same reel and I followed along and now it’s like new. Only thing is the spool is a little warped on one side I think it was dropped because it would not spin true and it would get caught on the side while reeling. Took a little sand paper to it and it spins fine now but I can tell it’s still tiny bit warped.

Great tutorials, i wonder if you might answer a question. The one screw disassembly isn't allowing the cover to come off with it undone, any ideas, it's a flea market find too. It's a made in America reel. HELP lol
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 4 жыл бұрын
Yes - there is likely to be a lot of dirt and dried grease that is preventing it from coming off. Try soaking the reel in a pail of clean water overnight and then try again. If that doesn't work, take the non-gear side plate off and remove the spool. Use a penetrating oil like WD40 and spray the inside and outside of the gear side trim ring. Let it sit for at least an hour. Put the spool back in and reattach the bearing side plate and try again. Hopefully, those steps will help free the crud and allow you to remove it - Patience will prevail - Dennis

Thanks for the video - a friend just gave me an old jigmaster and I'm trying to clean it up. Around 14:15 in the video you replace the plate over the pinion yoke and the eccentric. I cannot get the plate to slide over the post to the left of the eccentric. Is there a trick to that? You make it look easy. Thanks.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 3 жыл бұрын
John - you can try to move the eccentric free spool jack up and down as that will sometimes help to move the yoke assembly a little bit and align the stud to the bridge - Dennis

Great tutorial video! I found my old Jigmaster in my parents’ garage and decided to take it home. Was wondering if it is necessary to use two different greases, the Penn grease and star drag grease, or if you can use the Penn grease on the entire assembly?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 6 жыл бұрын
You can use the Penn grease on both, but the drag grease is thicker and will last longer before it needs to be re-lubed. You can get a small container of Cal's drag grease for around $10. Thanks for asking Dennis

If you broke the washer, you can get a replacement part through Pennparts.com. The 350 internals are the same at the Penn 155 Beachmaster, The torsion bar level wind feature is the only difference. Do you think jigmasters can handle 4-6ft sharks , do you think the line capacity is good and do you think the casting ability is adequate for surf use?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 3 жыл бұрын
They can, but the weakness in the Jigmaster is the frame, which is subject to twist because of the single screw take apart system . The high speed Senator 3/0 or the current Squall/Fathom are better alternatives from Penn

Dennis I’ve watched this video because I want to use mine for surf casting,,I have read that to slow the speed of the spool down when casting that a heavy duty grease should be used to help prevent backlashes,,,I’m using the plastic spool which is the lightest of the three and should spin the slowest,if I sent mine to you for cleaning,maintenance and drag replacement what would it cost and how soon could you do it,thanks Ray
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 2 жыл бұрын
Ray - thanks for asking. Please send a note to my email 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com for service information. I disagree that heavy grease is the answer. You can control spool speed with the side plate bearing adjuster on the non-handles side of the reel. Also, the lighter plastic spool actually spins faster as there is less resistance due to weight. I will look for your note. Best wishes - Dennis

Are you in the tracks? Do the pins line up with the grooves and is the set screw on the lower left side of the reel? Can you see the screw by looking from the inside - out to make sure it is in all of the way? If the answer is yes to all, check the minds on the side plate. There needs to be three of these. If they have broken off, the side plate will not hold. Thanks for asking - Dennis

Great videos.... I have the same reel. Is the drag supposed to be really tight for it to work properly. If it is loose it doesn't reel in any line.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 6 жыл бұрын
As a general rule, you should tighten the drag down completely and then back it off approximately 1/4 turn so that it has some slip. It should be hard to pull the line out by hand, when the reel is engaged, but not impossible. - Dennis

I just picked up a Jigmaster 500 from a yardsale. something felt misalligned when you would reel it , so I took it apart. Unfortunately, I didnt realize you have to rotate the side plate after removing the set screw. I assumed the metal was corroded, tried prying and broke it. Luckily, I found a replacement on ebay for cheap, but the replacement does not have the small brass lubricant piece near the handle shaft. How can I remove it from my original side plate?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 жыл бұрын
I would return it to the seller and not attempt the repair of the side plate. Then I would look for a complete one. The lubricant brass piece is pressed into the side plate and not easily replaced.. If you are set on doing this, you need to knock the old one out using a punch. Set the side plate on two supports, like the vice clamps of a bench vise so that the brass is able to be pushed through. Reverse the side plate so that you are "punching" inside to outside. Tap the lube barrel until it is free. The other option is to just break the original side plate with a chisel near the assembly, until the item is cleared. To reinstall, grease the assembly and tap it into the hole on the new side plate - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle Thanks for the tips! I guess I'll go ahead and give it a go - I don't want to spend the money on another cover - doing it for fun more than function. I don't really have a need for the reel in Kentucky. I have $20 in it at this point ($10 for the reel, $10 for the replacement cover).
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 жыл бұрын
Dillon - you can use the reel without the oil port. You don't need to replace it if you don't want to do it. You will just need to take the cover off every few trips and add a drop of oil to through the spool gear. Why don't you try it that way first? - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle I was successfully able to get it out of the side plate and into the new one. However, I have another question. Once I swapped everything over, if the spool tension knob (or the knob on the left side plate) is fully tightened, the spool will not disengage and free spool. If i loosen it up some it functions correctly, but there is some "slop" and the spool can move left and right. If I move it to the right it will engage the handle again and not free spool properly. Any ideas?
