This video shows how to take apart and service the smallest in the line of Penn Surfcaster reels. The surfcaster 100 has a narrow frame and an efficient gearing system. This vintage reel is still desirable today.
I have been servicing #fishing #reels for over 20 years and am sharing my experiences here. If you enjoy the video, please like it and subscribe to see more on fishing #reel repair and service

Thank you Dennis so much for posting this video. I have a Penn surfmaster 100 that I tried to service myself and it ended up in a bag however after watching this video several times I have now got it back together and in good working order. Mark from Australia.

Glad it helped Marc. That's why I started the channel - to have folks do it themselves. Best wishes from up north! Dennis

Dennis, You are so right for a service business!! I am consider a narrow frame casting reel for light bay fishing.

You may also want to consider an Abu Ambassadeur with braided line. That will match up well. Thank you for the kind word and feedback - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle Yes, I have seem them at my local Pawn Shops, but I have thought that seem to be over priced especial when placed on the cheap rods they seem to married with. I have an old wider frame Ambassadeur 5000 (red), just seems a little to wide for hands and to nice to salt fish with it. I mean, I do wash off the reels and each trip and air them off. I will keep looking for narrow reel, Thanks Alex In Houston, Tx.

I have done a lot of “bush” fixes on anti-reverse mechanisms on spinning reels. I did it on on a Daiwa rear drag Apollo reel, a Daiwa Regal fast cast, and a Sportfisher ultra rear drag to name a few. Several times I found the original parts but that doesn’t happen often. All those reels still operate just fine. The fix on this Penn was a good one especially because it was simple and minimal. Most of mine haven’t been that easy. I end up thinking about it for a good while until I come up with a plan. Of course half the time it doesn’t;t work but eventually I’ll find a way. I loved this video because of that “bush” fix. Thanks Dennis! I got a nice Mitchell 306 in the box with all the papers today. The 306 is one of my favorites. My other two are well used but this one is new. I also got another Shakespeare 2701 for my collection. Guess what Dennis, I’ve reached 170. (Not counting “bush” fixes!)

@@2ndChanceTackle I honestly don’t think I’ll ever reach 200. I simply don’t have the area to properly index and store that many reels. Also, at this point I have gotten most of the reels that I want. I’d love to get some of the later Penns than my Z reels. I’m talking about the ones made in the USA. Problem is I just can’t afford them. All the Penns from Greenies on up have soared in price making me grateful for the 11 I’ve got. I couldn’t do that right now. I think fishing reel collectors are coming out of the woodwork and driving up prices. So the only way I could buy some of these Penn reels is to sell others in my collection. I’ve worked too hard to do that so the rate at which I’ll accumulate additional reels is definitely going to slow down. Right now I’m looking at Japanese reels like Roddy and Shimano. Remember my collection has been based on the guideline that my vintage surf spinning reels would be mostly manufactured on or before 1980. I have a few that aren’t that age but very few.

It doesn't have to be "fishing reel" specific when it comes to grease. So long as you use marine grade. Reel grease is just re branded marine grease anyways.

I am not a chemist, so I stick to the ones labeled Fishing reel grease. If marine grease is working for you, go ahead and use it - Dennis

Thanks for your great videos, and the couple of reels I've sent you for service are like new. I do have a question about a Penn Surfmaster 100 I picked up at a fishing tackle store the other day. When reeling, it periodically gets harder to turn, like something is rubbing. If I take the sideplate off and reel it doesn't happen. So I'm thinking it's something with the spool or the non-handle side plate. Have you come across this before? Oh it's the anodized gray/black colored spool. Thanks!
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 2 жыл бұрын
It may be the side plate bearing or it could be that the frame is out of square. Hard to say, but you initial thought on it having to do with the spool sounds right - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle thanks! The reel seems aligned properly so maybe I'll look into that bearing.

Dennis do you think the pflueger with the one screw is any better than the penn reels with the one screw? Enjoyed it as well!
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 2 жыл бұрын
Which Pflueger are you referring to? There were a lot of manufacturers that used the single screw take apart systems and a lot of models were made by each. It is hard to compare without knowing the line you are asking about - Dennis

The antireverse spring in mine isn't very springy anymore. Know of any replacement springs in a material other than copper?

Howdy! I have my dads old reels and I serviced the Peen 100 like you instructed and it worked amazingly. Thank you. The reason I did it how ever is the handle slips or the inside moves when I am reeling in even though everything is tight clean and for the most part works. It’s only when I push hard and the spool is tough to reel in (like if a fish is on the end) not sure what is happening or if that is normal. All parts are in working order but can’t figure it out. It does the same on my penn jig master 500. Both are vintages. Any thoughts?

Have you checked the handle hole and where it fits on the gear sleeve? It sounds like wither one or both of them is rounded over and is not holding in place. The gear sleeve is a brass soft metal and if the handle is not locked down tight, the arrow will wear away the shoulders and there will be nothing to grip. Check that first and replace either the gear sleeve or handle or both if needed - Dennis
