When you’re riding a rental motorcycle in a foreign country, there are some worst-case scenarios that are the stuff of nightmares. Putting bad fuel into your motorcycle is one of these, but even worse than that is suspecting that it might be DIESEL!

when you say "no diesel", he definitly thought "diesel empty" from his understanding, hence you need diesel. IF you said 'no petrol', then he understand "petrol empty". its just lost in translation.

It is an obvious miscommunication. I have seen a video where a vegetarian foreigntourist telling a food seller that he does not eat meat ( daging ). He was served fish menu instead. 😂 Because in Malaysia , most understood meat = flesh of land animal😂. People with poor command of English , might interprete " NO DIESEL" = no more diesel = empty of diesel. 😂BTW gas mean gas ( eg LPG), not gasoline in Malaysia.

You said no diesel, so the guy thought your bike was out of diesel. Just say "petrol" and point to the bike. That'll solve the confusion. But from my observation it was definitely petrol but not very purified one cos it was filled with the container probably contaminated with other fuel, you know what. Anyway, I'm glad that it all ended well and both of you reached your destination. Congrats and cheers from Sarawak(Mukah), Land of the Hornbills!

Strange thing is why you tell ppl "no diesel" those ppl would know that motorcycle only run on Petrol or Gasoline. The pump attendant may even brag to his friends that he filled up a special bike that runs on diesel. Ahahaha

As Captain J L Picard said in the finale, "all good things must come to an end". The finale was not perfect because it was an adventure. If it was perfect then we would have no story. I learned from your Borneo stories; this series made me hop on a plane in March and fly to Kundasang for my holiday, we also learned of a new island you went and this obscure national park. Borneo, as you said -- is just magical. And we all now can see how tough the KTM is!

Hi 2Up, sorry to hear about your bike getting diesel, the old guy mistake! In Borneo or M'sia, the people call gasoline = Petrol, with RON95, 97 etc while Diesel = Diesel EURO, B7, B10, B20 etc

in malaysia we dont use gas words only petrol n diesel buddy....gas here in malaysia is for cooking mostly....the rental have insurance i believe when u guys rent it...they'll take care the problem u have...😁😁😁

In the end you were right in saying you didn't get diesel .I've done it and only got a mile or 2 before problems . Just very poor quality gas . I drained as much as possible , tanked w/premium and all was fine in 3 or4 miles .

Indeed… after reading up on what happens if you put diesel in a motorcycle, we quickly realized it was just bad / old petrol. Thankfully it burned through and started to run properly by the time we pulled into Tay Motors!

i was on a road trip from kota kinabalu to kuching 2 years ago and while filling my motorbike tank i got distracted by talking with my friend and mistakenly took the diesel nozzle and fill my tank. i instantly realised what i did but a large amount of diesel already filled the tank. i had to find a mechanic at the small town and he spent about an hour to dismantle my fuel tank and emptied the content. he had to come to the petrol station because i obviously can't ride to his workshop.

Oh no! I know that for cars, the nozzle is a different size and will not fit in the tank's hole, but that is not the case for motorcycles! I am glad that you realized and the situation was resolved!

Exactly wat i thought.. a bad petrol and some gunk clogging the fuel pump/filter/injector.. because if it is diesel, u will stall within minute..

other word for petrol is minyak benjen in local malay or binjin in Iban...(it is actually benzine)...mostly used in the rural areas.

Don't think they gave you diesel. I think you got water/bad gas. Diesel in a bike you'll get pinging, smoke out of the exhaust, all sorts of weird noises, and you would have known within the first 10-15 miles. Water/bad gas you won't know until water or junk starts clogging the fuel injector/fuel filters and it starts bogging down. What a mess!

Before coming to west malaysia or semenanjung as we local say, please be aware that we semenanjung people drive like setan or what you would call satan, especially in KL and Penang (source: i am one of them 😂). Even I dont really like driving to be frank. Just be extra careful. Motorcycle accidents here can be NASTY.

feel bad for you. this shouldnt be. one should know the motor rarely use diesel. close to none. if go long journey into rular you need bring some spare petrol. always be save

Great Advanture hope both of you enjoy it.. have you visit "Pulau Bruit"? From Daro district at Mukah Division, crossing Nangga Lassa River using Ferry to Pulau Bruit, then continue journey go out from Pulau Bruit at Semop using Ferry Batang Paloh to continue journey to Sibu or sarikei. im using this route to go back to my home town at Serian, always solo ride using my motorcycle (HONDA RS150R). i work at Pulau Bruit to serve the communitiy for 10 years until now 😁 im happy both of you arrive at Kuching safely. its might be water diluted and not diesel... you should know the first sign of diesel in petrol engine is white smoke...

I think you are correct! We wouldn't have gotten very far if it was diesel. It was just bad gas... Thankfully we were able to burn through it without any further issues.

Level of English in rural area could be not as good as urban area, probably it is a miss-communication, they dont understand gasoline or gas....we malaysian call it Petrol just like British , we use British English. Another possibility is , it was Petrol not Diesel , but because of the way it was stored in the rural, sometimes the petrol get contaminated, this happen most of the time. Otherwise, you should not be able to ride that long.

The colour was right for gas. Yellow is RON95.. RON97 is dyed green, diesel is generally clear or blue tinged. Sounds like you got contaminated gas.

It wasn’t diesel. Sounded like dirty fuel and stuffing up the fuel line.

Happened to me in KL when I bought a 10 year old used Volvo for a dealer. Got a bottle of Seafoam from ACE hardware and poured some into the engine and the rest into my fuel tank. That thing works wonders.

There were no proper gas stations on the Maludam NP peninsula... the gas station we pulled into was in Simunjan

Renting a nice bike, with all the gears (helmet, gps phone, GoPro, etc)..you couldn't afford to get a small gas container??? You know you will be on bike adventures and there are places hard to find gas.

We plan out our days and where to get gas. An extra gallon wouldn't have bridged the gap between gas stations. We did our research and found this place.

Diesel would not damage your motorcycle because Diesel won't combust, just foul spark plug. 😂

Just tip the fuel out and clean fuel line,, clean spark plug , put petrol in and it will start.

Most fuels are dyed to differentiate between grades. But I had no idea what color was used to signify the differences. And, it turned out not to be diesel, it was just bad gas.

You most definitely didn´t get diesel into your tank. Diesel mixed with petrol produces EXTREME smoke. Some genius at my THW squad (German disaster relief organisation) put diesel into the jerry can for our two stroke machines and I ended up fogging up Bonn with Chainsaw. That was very bad quality petrol that chap sold you. He probably got the stuff before the last flight to the moon…

We have received gas from plenty of 55 gallon drums without issue. We have been to some pretty remote sections of the world that don't have the luxury of having "proper gas stations"... that's where the real adventures take place.

Yeah, its wrong intrepretation of English language, British vs American vs local English. Thats where the whole drama startered. Its best to fill up in a petrol station or gas station in Anerican English. What a pity.
