How you place your stick on the hihats determines how easy or difficult it is to play smoothly and quickly.
Have you ever been sitting there watching your favorite drummer, wondering “why do their hihats sound SO MUCH better than mine??”
If you’re dealing with clumsy, amateur-sounding hihat playing (pat yourself on the back for admitting that! Trust me, I’ve been there!) … Then today’s lesson is for you.
You may actually be making things harder on yourself by ignoring these 3 elements of great hihat sound, which even a total beginner can get results from TODAY.
So if you’re with me, let’s get your hihats sounding a little bit more like what you hear on your favorite records here in the next 15 minutes. YOU CAN DO THIS!
I believe that ANYONE can learn the drums, and I believe you’re far more capable of becoming a great drummer than you think you are. Don’t sell yourself short! SUBSCRIBE for more Non Glamorous videos that get straight to the point of solving drumming frustration. Stay Non Glamorous, Everyone!

Been working on Hold the Line, and the hi-hat is exactly what's been holding me back. This lesson is just what I needed. Thanks!

Struggling with stick speed on the hats and really practicing "foot work" open/close hats in time when not actually playing the hi-hats. Love your lessons! Thanks!

Hi hat tension is tough for me. I have neuropathy so i really cant feel my feet. No idea how much pressure i am applying! 😂 I also play with a disabled left hand. So i have many walls i hit, but i never stop having fun!!

I have a suggestion for you, learn to play heel up, you'll probably want to learn with your right first, it can be done this way with a huge amount of control with practice. Good luck, remember your drumming have fun.

For Neuropathy try ALPHA LIPOIC ACID and BENFOTAMINE DAILY AND IT MAY REVERSE SOME OF THAT.

This is great advice. Not enough stuff online focusses on these basic elements of kit playing. More on how to sit, balance through the feet (playing heel up on both hats and BD for instance), also on where your hands cross over playing hi hats? How to get left hand out to play a hat roll with both hands during a groove?

I always learn a lot from your lessons; I appreciate the way you teach in such detail. My hi-hat rod is extra tall, too; I want to put one of those little tambourines on it. And I really don’t know where to begin with that Moeller stuff. I’ve seen so many different approaches, I’m a bit confused.

I have to wear sound barriers ( gun range type) as I have a small practice space. Its hard to work on the hh dynamics. Not hearing the hh well makes me use to much of the stick shaft , to increase volume. I appreciate this lesson. I have to figure out how to get this sorted out.

How do you, personally, determine the height of your HH when setting it up?

Yeh... that's a me too. I recently, a year ago, returned to drumming after a 40 year hiatus... forgot even how to set up. Started as he mentioned with my hats as high as they could go... I was actually searching extentions... why? The other day I lowered my drum stool...

@@user-jp5ri2yy3m seems like im always adjusting it. I play real hats with my simmons. I like them lower to play the top more, but to get that angle i have to drop my hand so low im knickin sticks

I have an electronic kit. Still getting used to the hi-hat (separate stand with electronic cymbal). Struggling with set-up. This will also help greatly. Thanks. 🙂 Weakness? Both.

I am clearly hitting too much on the top of the hat. I've got another thing to work on now. It will probably also mean I get a better sound, because I wasn't liking the sound it was making. Thank you, again.

They make the rod longer so you can play standing up if you would ever need to.

Maybe your speakers eq needs adjusting, perhaps try some headphones. We dummers can be affected by proxy hearing issues.

Your content is excellent. But your videos are muuuuuuch too long. I understand the temptation for revenues from advertising, but you could teach equally well all this in 5 minutes tops. I wish you considered this. Your audience would skyrocket. Cheers.
