It's a wonderful video. I got myself a Cajon on a whim and I am loving it. I've been at it just about every day for the last couple of months and your videos, in general, have been very helpful. Thanks for all the work that you've put in. On that note, it would be wonderful to have these exercises on the groove scribe app or in a way that makes playing these back and forth much more accessible.

@@albertlopez2237 hmm, for me, these are just so that my hands aren’t cold and stiff before playing a live show or doing recording. So, it’s usually just a metronome or the tapping of my foot that they go along with.

Ross, you are such a great teacher! Your videos are the clearest around and are so helpful. Thank you!! There is one thing I don't understand in the third exercise, that is you seem not to be playing the bass tone unlike the other exercises, but the white dots are shown anyway. Could you explain me that, please? Thanks a lot!

Andrea Tramontano hey thanks! Glad you found the video useful :-) the dots aren’t really sheet music or notation so the dots are kind of just a time guide but not more. It’s an app called “impulse” if you’re curious.

Nice again Ross..the accent shifting is extremely important and will make progress better if practiced enough..you explain it very well..should also be practiced very slow..40 BPM..as there is more room for error at low speed.being good at low speed will make faster tempos far tighter..just some advice for beginners that will help..I know you have discussed this already..it's so important..great video Ross 😁

Brilliant video, sir. Thanks! How do you feel about Cajon pedals? I’m coming from a kit and really struggling getting a good groove so a) starting here with the basics and b) using a pedal in the interim. Am I hurting my Cajon future?

Dave Dyer thanks! Hmmm hurting the future sounds a bit extreme but surely the beauty of the cajon comes from fluid hand movement in my opinion. It’s probably worth investing in your hands more than your feet with this instrument. Good luck with whatever you go with!

Hi Ross, for "quick attack" can you please tell me what each of the three different symbols on the visual metronome indicate? I have completed your first video in beginner playlist so i only know of two hits, bass and snare. Thank you.

Ahh the different colours just make different sounds on that metronome I was using. It’s just bass and snare. I just wanted the metronome to play different sounds but it’s not at all necessary.

Awesome videos! I have just found the Cajon at 34 and i am really enjoying the guides here. I had a question, do you see any benefit in the Moving 16th with just hitting the slap tones only and not the "ghosts" just yet. I have had my cajon for a few days and i am not grasping the ghost hits just yet. The Quick attack exercise is of course helping with that but do you see any issue with just getting the timing of the moving 16ths first then moving to the full exercise? I appreciate the help so far!

Always makes sense to simplify things and then build them up later if needed. So glad you’re getting into the community and learning with us. I would maybe switch over to learning some other grooves now and ghost notes will make more sense there than these exercises.

Great workout suggestions. I like the visual metronome a lot. Notation question - it appeared on the third workout you were playing snare notes rather than bass notes where there were white dots on the metronome. In the previous exercises, it appeared that yellow = snare and white = bass. Did I misunderstand the notation? Anyway, thanks for yet another excellent lesson!!!

Thanks for watching and asking this question. Because of the basic metronome settings I had I just wanted to make yellow snare as it was the highest sound, solid white bass as it made the next loudest sound but not as high. Finally there are hollow white circles which i just wanted to represent ghost notes but didn't have any other options left to distinguish bass and snare so just used it for both. Actually the point of the metronome in this video is really not about notating what's been played but just mark time in more detail than a usual metronome. I hope that makes sense! Thanks again!

Oh yes I see now!! I just wanted to make the metronome make a nice strong click on each beat even while accenting the notes to be hit in the exercise. As long as you follow what my hands were doing then that's the main thing.

I’m using a metronome called “Impulse” but just about any metronome should be able to give you the 16th note (1e&a2e&a....) count that you need.

Hey Ross, I'm getting a new casela Cajon online and struggling to decide between your dark and light cajons. Are there differences in how they sound? I'd really appreciate your opinion! :)

Hey Gurudev, I was lucky enough to play both and can tell you the main difference. The big difference is that the dark nut has a thicker playing surface which makes it more of a tighter crispy sound. The satin nut (light) cajon is thinner so there's more of a fat low sound. The satin nut cajon with an extra snare block on the inside makes it suuupeeer lively. I love that. The dark nut is so crispy, it really suits playing a pop or funky song. I hope that helps you out!

Good feedback. The visuals don't really make it clear what's what. The thing about those dots is they just came from the metronome I was using. The metronome's high beeping sound was yellow and the low beeping sound white. So the sounds matched nicely with the exercises but it was just the sounds.

Hi ross, i'm a very beginner at this, so i wonder is there any tutorial about setting metronome (and more) like this video in your course? i do not know anything about cajon so do i need to practice this first or i should jump immediately to your online course?

Hey Le, actually I was using a new metronome that’s more feature packed than we really need at this stage so don’t worry at all about that. To start playing grooves, any simple click to keep time is enough. Feel free to jump in and ask me whenever you need more help. I’m always here :-)

First timer here and I purchased a Slap-top Cajon but I can't find anyone teaching lessons on a Slap-top. Do you use a slap-top? If so will you do a beginner lesson on it?

Oh yeah I'll give that a try soon! I have a recent video where I trade solos between a standard cajon and a "slaptop" cajon which is pretty similar I think. Not a lesson but a fun way to see how it sounds in a jam session.

Using an app on my iPhone called "impulse". Any "metronome" will make a click sound to practice with.

The metronome I used in this video was called “impulse”. I also like one called “click”. But a physical metronome is still the best for total concentration since you can practice without distractions on your phone haha

@@josiedanielsmindmovement3399 I’m sorry about the confusion, it’s the Class level that gives you access. A while after starting memberships, KZfaq pushed channels into having multiple levels. It’s a bit more confusing so I might simplify back to just one. Sorry for the bad onboarding!

In this video I’m playing 8th notes so I counted “1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &” “bass bass snare snare bass bass snare snare” to make one bar. Then I looped that :) any other questions just let me know!

I'm confused about the meaning if yellow and white dots. In the first and second practices, you use white for bass and yellow for snare. But on the third one, you use it differently. It seems like it depends on the beat like 2/4, 4/4 etc but it's a bit confusing for me. Thanks for the great exercises!

I’m glad you liked the exercises! Apologies for the inconsistent visuals. The visuals don't really make it clear what's what. The thing about those dots is they just came from the metronome I was using. The metronome's high beeping sound was yellow and the low beeping sound white. So the sounds matched nicely with the exercises but it wasn’t really the best system for reading.

If you look at the videos by Paul Jennings 30 days to better hand drumming he plays both cajon and djembe easy patterns to build muscle memory. I'd like structured lessons too like this video but explaining how it works

In the 2nd exercise, the open dots are not bass? something lighter? Where should they be played? above or in the center? do they have a name?

The dots were just what the metronome app I was using produced for different beep sounds. Just watch my hands and listen to the cajon.

Beat 1: SNARE SNARE BASS BASS Beat 2: SNARE SNARE BASS BASS Beat 3: snare snare snare snare beat 4: snare snare snare snare Beat 1: BASS BASS SNARE SNARE Beat 2: BASS BASS SNARE SNARE Beat 3: bass bass bass bass Beat 4: bass bass bass bass The capitalized SNARE/BASS are the accents. The lowercase snare/bass are ghosts or soft hits.

Yeah a cajon with a mic and common effects like reverb can be pretty different in its sound I would say. It’s a matter of exploring what you like to create your own sound. The sound of hitting the cajon in a music store would also be very different to a theater, a living room, or outdoors.

@@rosslmccallum im helping teach fifteen an sixteen year olds at church I prefer the one with screws to teach how to get sounds they as individuals are looking for are drummer in church also use a cajon in special occasion trying to explain finding a cajon to sound just like his locally Huntsville Al made want ever happen as mo two will sound the same for one play wood is man manufactured wood hard to get exact when different trees make up the wood

@@michaelwillcutt2619 you’re right, it’s not easy to get any two drums that sound exactly the same and so finding one in a store that gives you the sound you like can be the best way to get exactly what you want. Also though, adjusting tension of your front plate screws can raise or lower the pitch/tone of the drum as well as adjusting snare or string tension to control the amount of sizzle you get. Right out of the box and on the floor at a music store might not always be the most perfect sound if it’s not adjusted a little. It depends on maybe the brand and quality level a bit.

They’re just a different way to represent rhythm. If you divide one beat by 2 you see 2 dots. Divide the beat by 4 and there are 4 dots. It’s from a metronome app called “Impulse”. But check out my reply to your other comment because that’s going to explain a lot of this!

I'm a bit puzzled. From 1:54 the 3rd and 4th rows are open dots and you play them as silent notes at the top of the cajon. But the the 7th and 8th rows are also open dots and you play them as a bass!! A bit confusing for me!!

I see!! The dots are actually a screen recording from a metronome app that I was using. Those empty circles were just to represent the softer dynamic after the accents. If the metronome had another colour option I would have used it but it didn't in the end. The lesson I learnt was that normal sheet music might still be the best way to display the notes. @@richardkramer1542 that’s really great to hear you’re going to bring me along for your cajon journey. I’m excited! 2 years in is still very good even if you feel you wish you’d started earlier. Continuing is sometimes the biggest challenge. Something we started a long time but didn’t stick with isn’t as valuable as something we started later on but have continued with. Also, years of experience in things that don’t initially seem to relate to music and percussion sometimes have a funny way of linking in so I’m sure even starting at 50 has its upsides too!

Lower down your lower mid frequency for your voice audio to cut out thse nasally voice, and cut your bass 100hz and below to delete those voice rumble

I find the biggest issue with players is timing. Use a metronome and stay on the beat.

One thing you could try now is slowing down the KZfaq video. It’s in the settings and you can make it play back at half speed or 75% speed. Give that a go and see if it helps :-)
