In this video I explain the best trees for establishing screening and cover on your property. One tree grows very fast, another holds leaves all winter, and a third puts up a huge screen all the way down to the ground.

I agree with the white spruce being a outstanding tree for wildlife. I’ve been planting hemlocks around my plots the last few years and are looking great as well

My land was sort of an open field, more or less. I planted red pine, white, green, blue spruce, jack pine, White pine and a few Norwegian pines. Most are now 10 -20 ft. Also have two apple trees, one in the front and one in the back. Crazy mass producing apple trees. Almost every single year. I've noticed the last couple years much more dear activity then in the past. Notice the white pines are more accessible to diseases. Looking to plant a lot of Aspen, other local popular that grows crazy wild around here. Using it for both as a buffer zone, for the deer, in to block/cutdown on the neighbors view of my backyard dear activity. Lol. Would love to get some oak producing trees. Not too many in this area I call home. I am lucky enough to have Farmers who put in acreage across the street, just for the deer. Which have been wandering across the street and hanging out at my place over the last few years. Much more than in the past. Looking to put some clover and something else as other small food plots. Have found that the Bucs love to rub on the spruce and jackpine. Anyways, thanks for the info Matthew😊

You ever plan any switchgrass? Thinking to put some up on the one side. Maybe a couple other areas. Thinking of putting it around a couple small food plots. Just to make them feel more comfortable. Doing it on my private land. Not on public. I've seen a major increase in big bucks on my land over the last few years. Mainly around velvet shedding time and first week or so of rut. Planner about load of a variety of conifers, many years ago with my Dad, when he was alive. Planted a boat load more since then. Things are growing, deer are traveling through often, year-round. Too many reasons to list. Surrounding areas are helping the situation. Pretty sure I told you about some of this already. Wondering what your experience has been with switchgrass. I know you had to have tried it at some point. Thanks Matthew. Appreciate the feedback brother.

Hello Matthew- no I actually have not planted it before. I know it’s an important tool for some folks. I’ve thought about adding some.

They browse and rub a few of my white spruce. They tend to not bother my Norway spruce as much and the norways grow faster.

Great video. Question where do you order white pine whips in bulk. I’m in northern Wisconsin thanks.

I order mine thru my county’s “soil and water conservation district” SWCD. They sell young pines every year. Check out your county to see if they offer that. If not, you can research local tree nurseries in your area. You may or may not have luck there. One tip is to get free trees, keep your eyes open and if you see an area of young volunteer trees coming along a road ditch somewhere (often under overhead power right-of-ways) you could contact the landowner to see if they would let you transplant them. I’ve done that. Free trees are the best. Good luck.

I’m thinking on planting green giants, due to how fast they grow. Also who makes the jacket you have on?

The tag on the jacket says “HFC Equipment”. I think I got this at a fleet farm

I would stay away from green giants for any type of screening. They will browse them as high as they can reach on their back legs.

You got any extra suggestions? I told you about the Aspen and local poplar trees I want to plant. Anything else that might come to mind, quick growing, brushy type of plant I might not be thinking about? Let me know if you do. Thanks brother.

Hmmm popples are an excellent choice if you want something fast. You can experiment with the hybrids. Only drawbacks to them will be that deer browse them and they drop their leaves in the fall. But they might be a nice enhancement to add brush to conifers. Also- there there are hybrid willows you can experiment with. Willows that grow fast. I might try those too. Not sure yet. For the conifers, I really like the pines (white pine, red pine, white spruce). The white pine and red pines grow so fast. I just like the fact they don’t drop leaves in the fall. The key is preventing deer browse on them. I know some folks are experimenting with green giants but those don’t do well in my area. I’d say just get planting now and do it every year. Plant more than you think you need as some young trees will die. Good luck and let me know how they all do!

@@northernforestwhitetail I planted some hybrid willows at my old place. Them things are like 40 ft tall in 20 years of growing. Crazy. Only plant them if you don't care how much they take over. They will suckle/sapplings all over. Just a heads up type of experience from someone who knows. Thanks for input and feedback Matt.
