While I do invest in ETFs I do dislike these whole market ETFs. While you may buy some gems, you also buy loads of crap. I do shop for narrow sector ETFs like IHI, XBI, SMH, VGT which despite higher costs do offer the exposure I am looking for to the companies I would like to own. All this emerging markets ETFs (ex China) have done nothing but be dead money for the past 20 years or so.

The broad market thesis goes back to the 6.6% gains the S&P 500 has shown since the beginning of time. It's very very difficult to beat a broad market benchmark over long periods of time, and one problem is those higher fees almost definitely erode any alpha with a long enough horizon.
