Keep in mind though that 4K footage only goes for the front camera. VanTrue for example (don't know about the Blackvue), when setting it to 4K - which is only available for the front camera - none of the other 2 cameras will record your footage. But like you said, 4K doesn't make a big difference vs. 1440K (VanTrue = 1440K front, 1080 in-cabin and rear), so I don't see the point of using 4K anyway. What made me decide to pick the VanTrue: - 3 cameras (1440-1080-1080 and 4K - front only, but like I said I don't care much about the 4K option) - build quality (it has some good weight on it and doesn't feel like a cheap Chinese knockoff thingy) - GPS (sold separately, around $20 depending on your country or where you buy it) - you can choose between 2 mounts. The suction cup that comes standard in the box or one with a sticky pad which is sold separately (with or without GPS). The ones sold separately have a major plus: where as with the in-box suction cup you have to make the connect on top, with the sticky pad one the connection goes on the side. This way you can move the camera higher up on the wind screen. - big and ease to read screen, easy to work with software - supercondensators (no lithium battery) which makes it less prone to failure due to extreme heat or cold. - excellent nigh vision, even with tinted windows What I dislike though is the fact that - when you want to hardwire it there's no kit included. They sell them separately (about $20, but you can get a cheaper aftermarket one if you want). I mean, for the price of almost $250 - I did get a discount though - you would think they would include at least that kit, right? So all in all, when you buy all the things you need or want to make it all perfect, you end up with roughly a $300-350 dashcam, proper 256GB SD card included. And that's if you do the install yourself (hardwire) and don't need to visit a professional mechanic to do it for you. Bit pricey if you ask me for a dashcam that doesn't has WiFi or Clout storage. I’ve had a dash cam for years. I was hit at a light by someone making an illegal left turn. The driver and her passengers swore up an down it was my fault. I sent the video to her insurance company and they quickly paid the claim and I got my deductible back. I encourage everyone to get one.

Imagine if car companies installed dash cams as standard in all cars. Neatly integrated (perhaps in the existing array of cameras and sensors), easy to use, and everyone has one so no lies when accidents happen. P.s. I know some car makers do this already like Tesla but this should be a lot more mainstream option

Nick, try zooming in on a few license plates especially in some tricky frames and see if the 4k saves the day in those situations. That seems like the most important benefit of 4k,but I'd like to see if you can detect a difference. I've seen so many dashcam crash videos where the cammer couldn't make out the plate even though the incident was on camera that I wonder whether 4k might be a major benefit.

Thanks for the precious comparison. I had to look up the view angles of the internal cameras as I am primarily interested in recording the interior and people talking to me through the windows. I found out that the vantrues view angle is 165 deg and the blackvues one is 139 deg.

The frame rate is also important when being able to identify moving number plates - possibly more so than the resolution. I thought the Vantrue looked sharper than the Blackvue!

Hi Nick, yes I also been using them for 10 years. Invaluable tool and can also highly recommend it. My only wish is that insurance companies would play ball and lower ones premium if a dash cam is fitted.

I’m glad you made this video. After researching the market for about 5 months, for me, It came down to these two. I was switching back and forth for weeks between these two in particular because I wasn’t sure which one was superior or appropriate for me. I hadn’t seen a review between these two so I was relying on individual reviews..It is still difficult because I very much like the Blackvue less cumbersome style. It doesn’t bother me that it doesn’t have a screen as long as I can see it on my cell. Actually I prefer it that way. I like the suction cup of the N4 better than having to stick it to the windshield permanently like the Blackvue but way prefer the smaller footprint of the Blackvue. However, what you said about the image quality being slightly better or equal on the Vantrue N4 with smaller files switched it back to the N4 once again, as oppose to having extra large 4K files. Also the back camera having less noise is extremely helpful and important. In addition the N4 is cheaper and smaller than the Blackvue. I need to weight that vs the N4 not having the cloud and WiFi that could be a deal breaker for some people. So I’m still confused.

I have a Blackvue DR900S and one feature I really like is to have the camera connected to the Cloud. So I can receive alerts on my phone and I can look remotely at recorded videos or watch a life stream when my car is parked. The Cloud service is free with some daily usage limitation but this is sufficient for my need, or you can get unlimited usage with subscription. I'm just surprised that during your review you didn't talk about this feature which is so useful and didn't mention if any other dashcam might provide it.

Things I found important about dash cams, for me. Battery or capasitor, size of veiw screen, how the divice is mounted to the glass. The size of the mounting devise. Sticky paper or suction cup. How easy to release from glass mounted base. 4K? Some of these things you figure out after you buy it.

I use my Thinkware f770 and last month I had a woman who was texting hit me head on, ofc she blamed it on me and started screaming at me and when police arrived starting making up a story, I let her waste 10 minutes of the annoyed cops time, and when he finally came up to me, I simply showed the video and it was very simple. within 2 days her insurance took full responsibility. She caused 13,000 of damage on F-type and know her insurance all state doesn't want to pay diminished value so time to go to court. Made my already heavily depreciated F-type worth even less. Also saved me on a speeding ticket where a cop claimed they got me on radar doing 106, and my camera clearly had GPS speed of 86. Always get a dashcam!!!!!

An interesting one I found was the Nextbase camera as it has a small battery to turn on if the car gets hit while parked it turns on in about 12 seconds.

The inside room Cam can rotate up & Down , but cant turn towards the door to make a video outside the door , as Blueskysea B2W . So please make type of Cam that could make a video inside room as well as outside the front doors too . That can rotate horizontally too instead vertical up & Down .

I have the vantrue N2 pro dual I just got a 2020 Toyota Camry so I hope the third camera fits in the back window since I just ordered the N4 today I hope I like it also Samsung genuine select ev SD card I got as well all coming from Amazon Sunday

There is a firmware update for the N4 that allows you to use it as 2.5k in the front 720p in the interior and back. I found or helped a lot quality wise. The only thing I’m having trouble with is getting license plates at night. My headlights make the license plates shine and that prevents the plate numbers to show. I am testing different configurations as lens aperture sizes to see if it helps but so far no help. How is the blackvue with license plates at night? Also, you can buy an inexpensive sd card reader for your iphone and watch the videos in your phone if an accident happens.

I like the blackvue because it has wifi and the vantrue because it has 3 cameras...if the vantrue had wifi with phone app and was 4K. It would be best on market....

I've had a dash cam for the last 4 years and to me these are the must haves: 1) Capacitor so that it withstands the heat and cold in the car when it's parked. 2) WiFi, so it can connect to your phone to download videos. 3) Small enough not to be detected from the front. 4) Park mode, so that it records when the car is off. You'll need another kit for that (battery pack and what not). 5) Have a professional install it

Thanks. Lots of very good info. Apparently rear camera is separate thus needs hard wire to front camera unit. Please recommend where / how to discretely mount rear camera on the rear window (991.1). Good footage of rear wiper action is important. Also where is “good” place to put the intermediate battery in a 991.1. Video for dashcsm in Cayenne / Macanese would be nice. Best regards, Greg

not having wi-fi is sometimes a deal breaker. Just imagine having the Vantrue when the accident with the old lady happened: hello officer, just let me get home and download these SDcard videos on my laptop :))) Another minus is the suction mount, even tough the dashcam is pretty small, it's just hanging there not looking "very" hidden.

I have BlackVue 650s-2CH version. The wifi connection is terrible. It was never work correctly (on Android phone).

Viofo has some AMAZING high end models for a cheap price too. I have the highest end one and the camera quality is better than the BlackVue. But the app sucks in comparison. But still, that's not what matters.

I want the dash cam who's rear cam dual or single , what I like should Rotate wherever I want to rotate should be attached to the holder ball kind . The easiest way . All Dash Cam should be like that . Easy to Record if Criminal/s comes to the either front door .....I have Aukey dash Cam DRO2 , is Excellent but No Option to rotate like BlueSkySea B2W

I am surprised Porsche doesn't over a solution integrated into the rear view mirror, and charge 2999 euro for it, seems like an easy money maker for car manufacturers. I guess it is because they are view it from the lens of a German manufacturer, and Germany has very stringent data-privacy laws.

One note: are you viewing the footage on a screen that can display the full resolution of the 4k video? If you're viewing on an HD screen of course they will look the same; the screen cannot display more pixels than it has. It will become apparent when zooming in on stills in editing software, though, say to make out a plate clearly. I appreciate the video. I'm leaning toward blackvue due to its superior appearance; like you I'm not going to muck up my Challengers interior with some poorly designed block and cords. I want it as invisible as possible. On question: blackvues reliability. Do the cameras last?

Finally it bit me! Think you should do a regular vid on auto accessories. Every dealer should offer one with purchase!

The issue I've come across is running it through the A pillar behind the side airbags. Can you show a video on installing a rear dashcam as running through the headliner can be a issue and if the car has a hatch what to do? One dealership claimed they wouldn't install them as they had several catch fire from the headliner allegedly going up in flames?
