Fired my vet after our first visit. No one in the office had even so much as looked at my newly adopted cat yet when the vet tech said, "yeah we ALWAYS recommend a grain diet here". Immediately, I knew the place was crap because you never recommend any substance to a patient without even knowing their health or history first! I'm in the health care field, (surgical assistant), but didn't tell them that. I already knew my cat had some type of allergy due to his runny eyes and itchy, flaky skin. That's actually why I adopted him, he seemed to need a pet mom who wouldn't just buy a bag of biologically inappropriate food and call it a day. He's a long haired tuxedo so all the white flecks were visible. I was in the process of transitioning him from the crap food they were feeding him at PetSmart (their own brand "Authority" dry food) to a raw diet. No sooner than I told Dr. White Coat this, she instinctively took a shat all over raw feeding. She was all for grain diets, even though she wanted to conduct a $200 test on my cat for allergen sensitivity... (Grains cause inflammation, which is what an allergy is) She didn't ask me ANYTHING about the raw diet, it's formulation, how my cat responded to it, not even WHY I chose the raw route. But, she felt comfy recommending a grain diet to a cat she suspected had allergies. This was a VCA facility. I had read and watched videos about how conventional vets know next to nothing about animal nutrition. But, I kept an open mind going in. Had she been intelligent, she would have suggested drawing blood to compare lab values later on. Instead, she insulted raw as being a "niche diet", insulted my intelligence and wanted him on grains to increase his inflammatory response, thereby necessitating her medicine for his "allergies" and padding her pockets. Still, I was polite and ignored her "advice" as I listened to her talk about an FDA study recommending grains. Well, if the FDA said it! It must be true! I walked out with a smile, knowing that my initial thought to see a holistic vet in the area was the right one all along. I wasn't at all impressed with her or her staff. I really just wanted his weight so I could know how to portion his raw more accurately. This vet and her staff are close minded, unprofessional and lacking. Which may explain why the place was totally empty on a Saturday morning in one of the busiest areas in my city! Happy to say that after about 6 weeks on a balanced raw diet, his eyes and skin have cleared up, he's happy healthy and doesn't want to chew on furniture or other inappropriate things because his raw food provides him with chewing opportunities. I strongly suggest challenging any vet who makes blanket statements when it comes to a pet's diet. Don't allow them, or ANY doctor for that matter to intimidate you. They will try, it's how they feed and maintain their God complexes.

The conversion of plant and animal nutrients are completely different. Saying that an obligate carnivore like a cat needs plants is just ridiculous. Even through engineering, the cat is still mostly the same animal that it was in the wild, just smaller.

Daily brushing... yeah, good luck with that ;) One of my cats weighs about 8kg (about 17.6 pounds)... he is big, strong and VERY particular about how he is to be handled. I.e. one hand only, no holding, one human tops - preferably one sitting or even better - lying. When I spray him for tics and worms I have to surprise him. If you try to force him to stay still, he will pee on you and everything around (no, he is not a skunk ;) but might have heard about skunk tactics ;) ) Fortunately his teeth seem to be clean and plaque free - same for the rest of the cats save one (but he has some auto-immunological problem and will have to be his teeth removed anyway). I feed them dry food only (Bento Kronen Lara) and they supplement it by hunting (yes, I know - I de-worm them regularly). It seems to work for them - shiny coat, bright eyes, full of energy... yes, some of the 32% protein content is soy based but it only makes them fart ;)

Can you do segments about what should be expected for basic manners and trust exercises? Like no jumping w/o command regardless of size, feet should be handled, leash manners, carrier training, etc. You might need to do separate dog/cat ones, but possibly not.

I've read lots and lots of ingredient lists (not every single brand and flavor of course) and I don't recall reading "meat" meal on the lists, but rather chicken meal, duck meal, etc. My understanding is that this meal is a variety of tissues (organs, etc.), not exactly what most people call Meat.

Cats need organ meat.human grade is a bit of a silly term.i wouldnt eat lung heart or liver..bc to me they are gross...but they are appropriate for a cat.

I was surprised you didn't mention taurine and the perils of tuna. Cats love tuna, so some people are tempted to feed their cats human-grade tuna. Problem is, tuna has very low levels of taurine, which is the equivalent of a vitamin for cats. Feed your cat a lot of human-grade tuna and it's going to develop irreversible eye and heart problems. As for tuna-flavoured cat food, it (like all cat foods) contains about 4% of the named flavour. Beef flavour cat food has 4% beef and the rest is mystery meat/plant stuff. Same with tuna flavour cat food - the 96% that isn't tuna has enough taurine to compensate for tuna being very low in taurine.

My cat is a tiny little peanut. She also has Cerebellar Hypoplaysia. She is a year and about 2 months old and still only weighs about 5 lbs maybe 6. i do food her well - well, i try to usually we get a 12 pack of wet food and that lasts us about 12 days. I i can't remember the name but i think it is either the sunken treasure one with crab meat, cod and other different sea foods. Or foods that are Patte' so i canmake sure there are no bones or things that could hurt her. Some times i buy her the "Mc Donalds" version in the feline world like the "9lives" in the blue container with the orange cat. I want her to fatten up!!! (LOL) but, the vet says she is healthy, just a tiny girl. After the wet food i usually try to get her a 4lbbag of dry food usually purina 1 immune system boosting or Natural Balance. When that is done it's back to the wet - and so on. Is this a good way to keep my baby girl Ohana healthy and having good verity or should it only be the wet?

Some cat food manufacturers like the sponsor of this video, Royal Canin set up shop inside Veterinary clinics and give them kickbacks. Just because your vet recommends grains doesn't mean he has an unbiased view. Grains are noted all bad. Ok, try feed a cat grains without masking the flavour and taste with all the artificial oils and flavoring and additives they have to add to the food just to make it appealing. Don't feed your cats grains. They're not chickens. Brands like Royal Canin and Hills all pay their in house reaserchers. There hasn't been any independent studies to show grains are beneficial to carnivores. Bypass the marketing bullshit and stick to what the animal actually needs and asks for.

I recently saw a hack for cats. where they warmed up 2 tablespoons of pumpkin and mixed it with the kibble, supposed to aid in digestion because of the fibre. According to the narrator, cats enjoy it. Its the great Pumpkin diet Charlie Brown.

I am getting a new balinese, and the breeder feeds all their cats Royal Canin, so I looked up Royal Canin on numerous lists and for the most part RC is nt a good food because of the grains corn and wheat which is not good for cats, so I've ready. But I have to say, trying to find a good quality nutritional food for new kitten is quite the task. The one food which keeps coming up is Instinct, then again how do I know what's good just but seeing what's added. Cat and kitten food are much more difficult to analyze for the average cat owner. I want unbiased scientific medical health reviews on the foods but good luck with that, I guess all we can do is look at the bad ingredients and avoid them? I was told Iams was good, then I read that it isn't because of the ingredients and that they test on animals. what they test is beyond me. test food, test shampoo, test make-up? I do not know. I have seen a few non commercial brands listed as the best but with that you end up finding that you need a second mortgage to afford these elitist foods. I just want to know what is a good to great food for kittens, cats. Why is good litter for them, treats? I mean, I feel like I am starting our racing a human baby. It is difficult to know who to trust with their information, since all products are meant to be sold, and marketers know that. When reviewers are paid by companies to discuss their products I am not exactly confident that they are unbiased reviews. Vets sell products, as do stores. Does anybody have an answer as to what is best food and litter? is clumping r non clumping better? dry or wet foods? brush or wipe, best toothpaste, best brushes, etc.. I want to make the right decision but it is not easy and after weeks of researching I have come to the conclusion that I cannot come to any conclusion because I just don't know what is truly good versos what is just marketed. HELP!!!!!

I can appreciate using sponsors to help bring more useful content to your viewer base, but just an observation: having a video about good pet nutrition "brought to you by" a particular brand of pet food makes it seem as though YOU as a veterinarian are promoting that brand as particularly healthy above other brands. Now, clearly this may or may not be the case, I just wanted to bring it up as a matter of the image you present to your audience and potential misunderstanding. :)

Now if your comment to me is exactly what I think it looks like, well here's the memo in case you didn't get it: Kiss my A$$ & if it wasn't meant how it looks, then word of advice, rephrase your English because it doesn't come across the way it might have been intended.....Who are you to tell other people what they might have experienced & are voicing?? NOT!

Vets are no different than other doctors and drug dealers who have big incentives to push certain products. Thankfully, exceptional vets exist, but a vet should not be given the benefit of the doubt until he/she has been fully vetted.
