Point two is so true. All the drummers you cited have a distinctive signature technique they do better than anyone else that makes them instantly recognisable.

Benny Greb once talked about this as well in this interview kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jrmdjK-nnbe3iWg.html He said he was unhappy as a drummer trying to be perfect and when he stopped trying to be the best drummer and chasing perfection, and instead just worked on being himself and bringing out his unique qualities, he started really becoming Benny Greb.

Off the top of my head I can think of 3 counter arguments. I'm not writing for the sake of being obnoxious but there is a reason to be critical with what you propose. 1.) Prioritizing your weak areas first allows movement into further domains of playing that you like but simply can't advance to without overcoming the hurdle of a genre you dislike stylistically. (one example could be learning rudimentary funk patterns you dislike because you want to develop the amen break you love for jungle playing a la Jojo Mayer) (playing 3+ voice counterpoint to advance sight reading skills even though you hate Bach) 2.) OVERALL practice time doesn't have to be reduced to whatever duration your brain can be active for before boredom sets in. For instance; not to cut down on 30 minutes of a particular repetition per day but instead to break them up into 4 sets of 7-8 minute exercises spread out over the entire day. Your mind is active, you avoid boredom setting in and the total time remains the same. Also the interval between one set of exercises to the next is overall shorter between late one evening and early next morning. 3.) The law of diminishing returns still applies but you are STILL making returns. There isn't an actual cap where you make no returns at all and this is relevant for people who push themselves more than others. They will make smaller and smaller INDIVIDUAL returns but compared to others there will be a larger and larger net difference between their gains and other people who play less over time. Great channel, love what you do, #TLTR

Exactly, you are actually doing what I adviced at 7:00. Balance is key, practicing too little, or with no repetitions or zero weaknesses is not a great way to improve too. I also said we should focus equally on our weaknesses and strengths at the end of that chapter. And just to respect the law of diminishing returns, not worship it. Thanks for the share Daniel, I like your super detailed arguments, it serves as an extra reminder to anyone seeing this and watching my video to think for themselves and find their own perfect balance. CHEERS and THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT!

I am guilty too. However I'm really still doing a lot of testing of these points along with some others. And I'm always still finding new things about our brain and muscles that I wanna try out. It's all for coming up with a balance that works for you, glad you liked it and I appreciate your support!

When you burn out, it means you've been doing too much in too little time. But allowing yourself to burn out means you have the virtue of hardwork and keeping up with suffering, which is admirable. Anyway just let your body and brain rest and recover from time to time. Treat them and understand them well and you'll be able to reap the rewards :)

It can be helpful to do that especially if you're learning an Animals as Leaders song for example, it takes me 1 hour to even comb through all the sections of a new Animals as Leaders song. But at most I am able to practice each section thrice before I have to move on. And my brain appreciates that even though I'm working on one damn song for one hour, I'm doing a 100 different things. The idea is to just respect that your brain needs a break and if you let it take a break especially by switching up the task, it will thank you. So yeah there is really little reason to practice a 6 note chop, or a one bar groove for hours. When you can mix in a couple of things and get more brainpower and results. I love that you love my videos, I only aim to serve an alternative perspective of drumming and education online :)

Perhaps in the first study you mentioned about the baseball players, because the pitchings they had to perform were random, they could not rely so much on muscle memory to execute it the fifteen times in a row.
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ 5 жыл бұрын
That's leads to an interesting question about muscle memory, which I totally want to explore in a future video. Because muscle memory comes from the brain. And some people take on the opinion that taking advantage of your brain forms better muscle memory in the long term instead of just doing more correct repetitions in a row. That's why this blocked/random test was done too, to test taking advantage of the hardwired nature of our brain to dislike repeated stimuli. The brain is truly intriguing isn't it :)

I love to watch your videos because, on top of the really high quality, I can see a hard working musician that loves to teach and is really honest in his videos. This one helped me a lot in my obsessive and frustrating relationship with practice, and taught me to start experimenting and looking at it critically. It also reminds me that I'm not alone in the struggle. Keep this up, because there really is nothing else like it. Thank you!

Hey there Marcos, what challenges do you face when it comes to practicing? Thank you for your compliments anyway, but the pleasure is mine because we're all in this together. Neither of us alone can ever take the art of drumming to a new level. But together we all can!

These points transcend drumming. Hell... they transcend music. I'm going to apply these to my gym workout routine next week.
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ 5 жыл бұрын
Oh hey, let me know how you apply it at the gym and how it goes after a few trials. I'm really interested to see the perspective of muscular/fitness development. I know the brain is really involved in the development of our skeletal muscles but I'm unclear as to what extent. Keep in touch Wilson!
@n00dl3
@n00dl3 5 жыл бұрын
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ sure! I'm particularly interested to see if doing my sets in no particular order helps or hinders. I find it difficult to finish my sets some days and often want to just do something else and come back, but I've stuck rigidly to blocking my sets into specific exercises (i.e. 3 sets of 8 reps for squat, 3 sets of 8 reps pull ups, etc). Maybe rotating exercises can help me avoid fatigue. It's possible that it lets me rest the muscle group too much, though. So in that case, I wont progress as fast.
@LexerJason
@LexerJason 5 жыл бұрын
Wilson hybrid it's a good idea but I think you'd have to read some literature about metabolism, energy storage and use in the muscle tissue, and the impact of different types of muscle work (aerobic/anaerobic) on the buildup of strength and endurance. As for the brain and the nervous system, judging from my knowledge and experience, if they can send more powerful impulses to the muscle a person can cope with bigger workload. At the same time, weak impulses because of tiredness, sleeplessness etc. significantly reduce the capabilities of even very strong and trained muscles. Maybe you already know this information but somebody might find it useful)

@infinity_untitled. 5 жыл бұрын
Well honestly I felt I was stuck for awhile after you left (since I was young, I did not have a very big interest in the drums yet) but I recently picked up the pace again. I passed the grade 3 rockschool drums with merit 2 years ago and I think I can confidently play the grade 5 pieces now. I'm still lacking in my improvisations (since I usually follow scores). Oh and I plan on going to Lasalle next year but I'm not sure if I'm at that level yet haha
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ 5 жыл бұрын
Nice to see you found your passion again. Level or skill is never the issue, if you really want to get into LaSalle, you'll do the necessary to make sure you're up to skill. If you want to play drums for a living, you'll do the necessary and you'll be able to fight through the struggles that come with being a musician. So mindset is most important, followed by serious action. And skill, understanding and work comes as a product of the above. You've got it in you Darren so go for it!

Do you think #1 would still be true in a marching environment? I feel like "fighting your brain" and building mental endurance is important.
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it wouldn't work for anything muscle intensive. Like speed and endurance, that takes intense repeated sessions usually. There's advantages and disadvantages to any methods. Also you're totally right about building mental endurance and focus, and that cannot be done with this method, thanks for sharing your opinion Nick!
