Auto/distant switch didn't work as it should or someone left it in the wrong position. It is usually the latter. Imagine if we had to use all that diesel for all the trucks we would have to use without trains. Hundreds of thousands more trucks. Maybe over a million. Think of the Interstate highways then thank railroading. They make sure we eat.

Where was the attention of the engineer of the second train to see if he had a red light? This could have been prevented if the trainmen was paying attention to the fact there was a stopped train who had a green light and the switching train had a red light or even a yellow light.

I thought PTC is suppose to stop this from happening? The intermodal train has Tropicana reefers up front. I would speculate that this train was improperly lined.
@johnclamshellsp1969Ай бұрын
PTC will NOT stop you from running into the back of a train. It just won't let you do more than restricted speed. Stopping short of trains, derails, switches, broken rail, or any other hazard. Restricted speed does not mean you can do the maximum allowed for restricted speed. The refrigerator cars if empty or not running, can be near the head. If running the separated by one non-hazardous or plain car.
@markydee48Ай бұрын
@johnclamshellsp1969 that is precisely my point. PTC is supposed to prevent this from happening. That train was not operating at restricted speed. And as a retired locomotive engineer, and you can ask anyone that is still operating, PTC is supposed to prevent collisions at speed. The Folkston camera clearly showed that the NB intermodal was operating well above restricted speed. The point I am making about the reefers up front is that this train would be headed north to NJ and is usually lined to the Nahunta sub and not to Waycross. Hence, it is my point that one should question how this train was lined. Was it a Stop signal violation? Improperly lined switch? Was there a malfunction with PTC on this train? It can be a number of things, but PTC's major selling point was exactly that, prevention of collisions. That is also what the RRs are trying to point out with their desire for 1 man crews. It's very clear on the video that the crew did not see the other train until they entered the curve. thats when the train was heard dumping the brakes before impact. Again, as a former engineer, this is not exactly what I would expect to happen with PTC. There are a lot of questions that need to be answered there. Nonetheless, I am happy to hear that the crew of both trains were not seriously injured, although one conductor was reported to have broken his arm and leg. Prayers to both crews.

@markchalupa7981 if that was the case, then heads are gonna roll. That train passed through Folkston as if he had a favorable aspect on that signal. He should of had a stop signal or a restricted with another train occupying the block ahead. Something isn't right here.
