Reaching Brewster Glacier involves a steep and challenging climb with a total vertical gain of 1,200m. The Haast River must be forded within a couple of minutes of starting the walk, so if it's in flood, this trip won't be possible.
The track over the first 3 hours to Brewster Hut (12 bunks - bookings essential between October and April) is well-marked. Beyond the hut, route finding skills are required; the remaining 2 hours is spent weaving among steep bluffs and scree. Being in the alpine zone, this section of the track can get snow and ice at any time of the year, but in winter this place becomes true mountaineering territory.
After waiting patiently for a good weather window to arrive, George (my 16-year old son) and I set off to see this very special place for ourselves. I hope you enjoy this record of our little adventure.
Trip undertaken 21-23 April 2023 (heading into late autumn). Footage captured on a Nikon Z7II with a handful of shots from a GoPro Hero 8. Edited in DaVinci Resolve Studio 18.

Jeez the glacier is a fraction of what it was in the 80's. Where you camped used to under the ice. Lovingly well done photography and editing as always!

Cheers Philip. Yes that was something I reflected on a lot while up there, looking at all the gouges and scratches in the bedrock. Must've been an even more spectacular sight back in the day.

What sleeping gear did you bring ? How cold was it over night you reckon? Thanks for making this
@DanielMurrayPhotography

Cheers mate. I had the Sea to Summit Spark SPII and EtherLight XT. First night must've been at least a couple below freezing - enough to put a thin coat of ice on the lakes. Bag was fine but I could probably have done with more insulation in the mat (tent was setup on gravel).

Nice edit work with merging the google earth animations with (what appears to be) drone footage. Correct?

@@JoshuaJohnsonOutdoors Thanks very much. There's a lot of illegal aerial footage in other videos of this location, and indeed all across our national parks - drives me a little nuts! :-)

Hi, did you have any hassles camping there? Are we allowed to pitch a tent in that area or?.... do we just hope not to be moved on?. Would love to take my teenagers but would hate to plan a hike and end up in trouble lol
@DanielMurrayPhotography
@DanielMurrayPhotography 2 ай бұрын
There are no restrictions on camping around there, although given how popular it now is, maybe that day is coming! There are a number of places to pitch a tent but good sites soon get in short supply when it's busy.
