When you think of a Carbine Course, what you're really thinking of is Urban Rifle...
Clint Smith basically wrote the book. Originally penning the curriculum for Urban Rifle back in 1983. The idea of using a rifle at pistol distances. Which big picture, is how most everyone uses their carbines now.
I had an awesome time down there at Thunder Ranch attending the 3 Day Urban Rifle Course. Crawl, walk, run. From zeroing to movement, shooting moving targets and working together with a teammate. Overall an awesome course.

I agree with going slow. I feel like most people treat those training situations like a video game/movie instead of a real life engagement. In a strange structure with no Intel and no exigent circumstances; imho, take your time clear and practice that muscle memory.

Good review and very well put together video. It's interesting to see how Urban Rifle has evolved since I took it a few years ago. Having been to Thunder Ranch a few times, I have to say that their curriculum is practical, everyone who teaches there is a good instructor, the facilities/ranges are top notch, and the views are amazing. Not to mention that Clint and Heidi are two of the nicest, down to earth, and knowledgeable people you will ever meet.

I dont think it is typical, since one of his previous videos on the Perun said that it went down with a stock breakage halfway through the course, he was then issued an aero rifle by thunder ranch and i think switched to a sugar weasel for the remainder of the course IIRC

It’s always a good idea to take a back-up carbine to a Carbine/CQB course, preferably an identical or very similar configuration, or at least 2 uppers. BCM is an easy answer for that. Those of us who run this type of training bring back-up loaner carbines for attendees. I personally bring a Block II SOPMOD with LPVO, a 14.5” MLGS BCM with RDS, a fluted 16” with JP handguard and FSP cut with RDS, a 727 JSOCMOD with RDS, and sometimes a Colt 605. If you run your components through the armorer’s gauges shown frequently by SOTAR, mainly your chamber gauge, port diameter, BCG 3 inner bore diameters, bolt gauges, carrier key bore and alignment, carrier key fastening specs, receivers, RET, and good mags, you’ll have a reliable little blaster. Best to just get one from the few companies that actually do this for starters, because the armorer gauges and tools required are the cost of many rifles and high-end optics: ******************PROFESSIONAL LIST**************** -Brownells Apron or similar Apron A good Apron is a must for a professional Armorer or Gunsmith. -Hawkeye Bore Scope This is for Barrel Inspection, Bolt Carrier Inspection, Suppressor and Muzzle Device Inspection, but most of all it's great for aligning Gas Blocks. The Lyman Bore Scope is MUCH more affordable, but it's not as clear and may not work well for Gas Block Alignment. I will be testing a very cheap alternative soon and if it works, I'll update this post. -Saturn Barrel Blocks They grab like no other Barrel Blocks. -.625 & .750 SLR or BRDE Barrel Dimple Jig For Dimpling Barrels for Gas Block Set Screws. I recommend a drill bit collar and carbide bits to use these Jigs. A Drill Press or Mill is best but you can use a Hand Drill. -Carbide Drill Bits for Dimple Jig -PTG or Brownells Lapping Tool Get training before using this tool. -Brownells Magazine Lip Gauge -Bushnell bore sighter/collimator -Sweeny Site A Line Spud Used with the Bushnell Collimator. -Site Lite Bore Sight Laser -Arisaka Leveling Kit -CKT Level -Badger Ordnance Dead Level -.625/.750 Flex Hones For deburring FSB and Gas Block bores -Rotary Tool Get training or practice A LOT before using this tool. -Feed Ramp Rework Polish Kit: -1/4" Bullet Tip Stone (For cutting the Barrel Extension Ramps ONLY), #8 Cratex Bullet Coarse (Brownells Part # 190-025-081), #8 Cratex Bullet Fine (Brownells Part # 190-025-083), #4 Pointed Mandrel for Cratex Tips (Brownells Part # 190-001-004), 1/4" x 3/8" x 1/8' Felt Bob (Brownells Part # 839-500-025), 555 Polish (For Felt Bob - Brownells Part # 080-555-001) -M-Guns Throat Gauge -BRT Gas Block Insert Tap Set -PTG Muzzle Erosion Gauge -Merchant/Brownells Throat Erosion Gauge -PTG Barrel Straightess Gauge -Schuster Thread Concentric Gauge Checking for Thread to Bore Run-Out -Geissele or Surefire Suppressor Alignment Rods -Granite Slab For checking for bent or untrue items. -USGI Barrel Nut Wrench with 3 Prong F.H. In one of Clint's videos, he talks about a woman in a wheelchair that came to a class. The first thing he did on the range was dump her on the ground, because that's what someone would do if they were attacking her. She came back multiple times. He's not wound tight, but he sure as hell doesn't sugarcoat anything.

Trial juries are a wild card. If a prosecutor gets to show a picture of an exploded head to 12 pearl clutching Karen's, you'd probably go to prison. If there's 2 in the jury that have taken a self defense course, you'd probably be fine.

The distance you use a pistol would be when you are pushed up against a wall with knife pressed against your throat. These classes are cool I want to take one, but the distances where I live and what I can carry handgun is really the only option. Rifle/Shotgun is only really good for home defense.
