After travelling to ghana for over 18 years I would say planning and having a network in ghana is absolutely vital. My first trip to Ghana was a huge learning curve, lights off, water shortages were all things I had not factored in when travelling!! However, Ghana is changing fast and I love the people and kids that are smiling even though life is difficult, Cape coast, Takoradi and Kumasi have lots to offer. Beautiful food and the most stunning beaches are further west. Lovely to see ppl making Ghana home. Also to hear your honesty!!

My advice is as first Comer to any country try to get a local to take you through how the country systems work or else you will spend unnecessary money. It's ridiculous to rent a car in ghana for 700 dollars a week this really shows that they see you as a stranger.

That's crazy. I too am former U.S. military, now living in South Africa. I've lived here going on 5 years. One would think after almost 5 years of living here in South Africa, I should be accustomed to the country. Not so, this thus far is the longest learning curve of all the countries being in. I too had a romanticized thought of the continent. I will share with my fellow American Sisters, and Brothers, think long, and hard before relocating. If after that you still wish to relocate, come for the long haul...

I too served in the military (US NAVY) and learned early on in my travels that no matter the color, if you're from America they already dislike you and they're ready to take full advantage of your ignorance. So, with that it's best to do your research, visit several times and make acquaintances that you can develop a bond with BEFORE packing your stuff and moving to an UNKNOWN. For you and the good Dr. because you have resources the difficulties you've encountered were minor inconveniences. However, there are PLENTY of people who are not financially, emotionally or spiritually able to weather the ups & downs of moving abroad. This is good to see. They put it all out there both the good and the bad. Military does make it easier to adapt, because it makes you flexible. but seeing them here breaking it down. Networking is key!

As Americans we are spoiled , living in a less modern country is a culture shock . I tried to move back to Vieques Puerto rico where i was born and visited , the heat bugs expensive food an having to take the ferry 20 miles over the ocean to go to Walmart was too much .i still visit for a few weeks

Ghana is ok but can be stressful. I enjoyed the couple experience I have had similar. I do a couple of months there and a couple in the us I’m also retired military building in Ghana

It is advisable to visit a country first to make sure you like it before you move.

For someone with that much experience in USMC, he was flying blind in such an important life decision? Aesthetics are used to promote tourism EVERYWHERE. Unfortunately, they seemed to have chosen to watch more of the aesthetics videos than the “real real” situational videos on the ground. I've been studying these type of movies since I retired at 62 and I'm now 64. I needed to see if my retirement income would sustain me outside of the USA. I have a passion for West Africa although I've never been. I wish the governments of these countries would realize I'm not alone and create smooth processes that would make sense to us coming from America! That's substantial money collectively! I can't advise you on your move to Ghana. But for two retired USA military that's a big step in my humble opinion. I visited Africa in 1971 and 1972 while in the USN. I had mixed experiences but nothing that I would say were bad. Africa has completely changed since then. I hope you enjoy your move with your daughters. Additionally looks like Africa will prosper finally after its colonial period. Good luck to all of you and have a wonderful life.

Appreciate your candor and honesty! It is not easy to speak openly about losses but by doing so you have given valuable lessons to many... preparation is key..and working with pple on ground is critical...visit before and have a trusted team on ground to guide you thru the process... all the problems you mentioned many many many returnees have had to find solutions to them...eg one should never arrive to a hotel... accommodation and a small vehicle must be sorted in advance... schools options for kids etc must all be nailed down im advance...and most importantly income source must be very clear before you leave even if it means one spouse continues working online with US firms etc these things lessen the shock...but congrats for toughing it out and enjoy all Ghana has to offer

It’s not easy, you just gotta have the right people on the ground .. if not everyone gone squeeze money outta you.. and also the country side is better than living in the city.. less traffic and more space to do things

Network with the Ghana Medical Association, get to know the Military Hospital at 37 where you can work as civilian Doctors and also get know the Diaspora Association in Ghana. As doctors you should have no problem settling down quickly in Ghana. Work thru the American Laser Hospital in Cape Coast or Accra.

There is still way to much corruption in Ghana and other African countries and this makes me angry ! The infrastructure is a mess still ,you can only lease the land not flat out own it ,this needs to change ! Their are no setup rules or programs for retired expats to assist them like in Belize ! Until are beautiful Africa stops all the corruption and makes these changes Africa will continue to struggle attracting more of us melenated folks !

Property in Ghana is way expensive. It's different to South Africa. I think try different countries like Senegal, Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia, South Africa, Rwanda, Namibia etc. Choose what is the best fit for you.

I am in Cape coast maybe you can look into asabu free land, you pay a fee for paperwork .quite a few American and others are buying and building homes. I was very blessed I met beautiful people in 2018 now I'm very greatful. Yes there are challenges however, even in us I would say more, my opinion!

I do under stand that couple. I have been building in Ghana and I have had my share of disappointments with people not being truthful and just after your money. I’m also retired US military. And has the same last name of this couple. I have spent over $100 thousand US dollars and I’m only just finish the foundation. I paid $60 thousand US dollars for my two plots. I left Ghana in November I was so tired and disgusted about the changing prices and most people just out to make a dollar. My wife is from Ghana so I will continue my build. If I knew what I know now I would have build a smaller house less expensive etc.

You people made a mistake by not having people on the ground to help you get some services at a cheaper price.Thats important wherever you are going.

Nice interview! They should have chosen South Africa! As an African American who's planning to move to Africa, South Africa is one of the easiest countries that Americans can adapt to fast and use the many services we are used to using without paying bribes over and over again to our brothers and sisters. My DNA results shows that I'm West African, and I have love for all of our African brothers and sisters, but us African Americans are not used to paying extra money because of our accents.

A lot of Africans have similar or even worse experiences from traveling to Europe, USA, or Asia for the first time. Oftentimes, we romanticize other countries and imagine what life will be like there, but proper preparation will certainly decrease the pain and struggles people encounter after such moves. I lived in England and Ireland for 5 years and those were the worse 5 years of my life. Living in America has also been a traumatic experience for me. Although America has its good and bad. There's no heaven on earth. We just have to figure out how to make things work

I've watched a few of these Ghana videos, and I don't see much difference between the kind of planning you'd do before moving to, say, Costa Rica. The chief preparation, of which, is to have a reasonable source of income, such as retirement income, and expect to pay A LOT to get yourself established.

Bringing America to ghana NEVER works. The American way of life will cost you. My recommendation to anyone thinking about moving, is to visit it a couple of times. Get with exparts already living there and get advise on how to transition. Since they are Americans, they can help you navigate. You have to do your research. Happy moving

You should get a balance view and always prudent to get contacts and foundations laid before you can see benefits. Before I moved to England I had links and people who were willing to help.

Ghana is one of the nicest countries in the world, with some of the nicest people in the world. But one thing no one appreciates until trying to live overseas: It is much easier living in the USA than anywhere else. We have much-better-quality consumer goods than anywhere else, at much-lower prices. You walk to your car parked in your driveway, drive to the store, and park right in front of the store. Life is easy in the USA.

I think you went to the wrong part of town and maybe had the wrong daily attitude...went to Johannesburg for 3 months.. .was ready to go home after 2 weeks, as I had gone into a state of utter panic ! Then remembered I'm from a place that has much violence and harassment...asked myself how do I live at home ?...so I re-addressed my mind & daily attitude to the situation...I had a GREAT 3 Months ! I could have stayed there a few years.

People have to invest your money. So you can have dividends stocks that pay you and you can be a product reseller in any country and a content creator. I came up poor so I can survive any where I prefer not to have modern things. I would rather live off the land

Yes, things are not all that smooth in Ghana but I think the experience is worth it people. Try to visit Ghana first. Learn our ways, I have friends from the diaspora making it in Ghana. Don’t think extravagant, get good connections, go simple, create your own mini luxury. There are some white folks who come to Africa and are able to adapt because they don’t look for the luxuries and easy life. Getting a good person to help you settle down is the key. Most of the issues they complained about are real but again they can be avoided with proper planing. I respect the views of the couple but again I think their standards and expectations were too high. With that expectations their should have settled down around East Legon or Tema, where the system is more Western settings. It’s more organized over there.
