It’s sad most jobs want atleast 5-10 years experience but how can you even get that experience if nobody will even give you a chance. It seems like most jobs don’t want to train anymore you have to know every single thing before you even walk in the door 😔 and the security clearances is another big issue if you don’t have one your resume won’t even get looked at.

Now we spend so much money and time on education, and employers are telling us if you don't have experience we can't hire you. First, getting a degree in that particular field, that person is already showing commitment and interest. So what's the deal? that person has three degrees even a master. The problem with an IT or computer degree is by the time you graduate, much of what you learned becomes outdated. Technology is ever so changing. A lot of what you learn about computers is on the job. I think school can be helpful, but it also helps if you have an internship so you can apply some of the knowledge that is being learned. With IT, I don't find it too common for folks to have a Master's degree. You go to school and 'you learn how to learn.' But when you are on the job, it's about applying the applicable knowledge. A degree is there to compliment your work experience, it's not meant as a substitute. The best way trying to get work experience is when many employers partner up with colleges. I was blessed that I had enough in connections where I had a total of four internships throughout my college years. But, then come time to trying to get a full time job, it took me over a year. Applying for jobs becomes a part-time job in of itself and it gets tiring. I think what really helped me was when I sat down with my parents and job developer where we went over my resume and interview skills. You often don't know if you are doing something wrong unless someone tells you. I used to answer that my greatest weakness was multitasking, that wasn't the best answer to give as many jobs require it. But with advice it's important to see what's important and what's not. For instance, I was told that it was important to have a one page resume, but the federal government often likes you to list out all your experiences that are relevant. So applying for those jobs my Resume was just over 2 pages which was acceptable. If someone is looking for a job in the federal government, try looking up Pathways if a degree or certificate was earned in the past two years. www.usajobs.gov/Help/working-in-government/unique-hiring-paths/students/

Ok. Coming from someone who has Psychology and Behavioral Science double major successfully cracked into Software Engineer without class, here is the list: 1. Get an experience whatever it takes. That means create your own website, app or anything. It's going to take a while and many iterations, but build something. If no one want so hire you, dont just sit around there like an idiot. Work with a passion and goal. Build something! Anything! Obviously, anything that is useful. 2. Volunteer provides great opportunity. I spent 3 months built an entire survey site with local storage to help a psychology professor for her research thesis. This also meant full stack from MySQL, PHP, HTML, CSS, Linux, React, and tons more. If you dont have number 1, you'll never figure out number 2. I was working full time and code at night working minimum 16 hours a day 7 days a week. 3. Rejections is hurtful but fight through it. Got rejected through interviews more than I can count minimum 200 times. I once drove 16 hours for a single interview and got rejected for over-qualified. 4. Now i'm helping my company hire employees. Here is the thing. No one cares about your degrees. It doesnt mean shit. The interns we hire ALREADY has 2-3 projects under their belt with records to prove it. They already built something like a website or an app. When we see someone with master degree or even doctorate degree with no experience, it's an instant rejection even if it is MIT. 5. In real job, no one will teach you. You must learn yourself. If you dont understand, use KZfaq, Google, StackOverflow, talk to developers, books. Whatever it takes. If you didnt work at all in the years of school experience, you'll get rejected. Prove to these companies that you can make it and get it work regardless if any company willing to hire you. Build something! fyi regarding pay, we hire top of the top. An intern can get above 90k. Dont believe me, go to glassdoor, check Google, Facebook, etc. This is not exclusive to bay area. Again, no one cares about your degree. We hire as young as high school students some with more experience than college graduates.

Its a complex situation also I don't know how to handle pressure. My mom is like push push push, whilst my grandma and all my friends told me I should try something else. They said just because I learned something at uni doesn't mean I have to do that profession. But my mom says, "you have learned so many years and paid so much tuitions, if you don't do this job its going to waste. Only people with your degree can apply to this kind of job because it's very specialized" etc etc. I appreciate my mom pushes me is because she wants me to be better. I want to make her proud, however I don't know if I am actually capable to make it after failing so many times. She is a stubborn person and I am too, but I don't like to be pushed for everything, plus all my friends and my grandma says I should do something easy first and apply to more competitive job later if I wish. So I'm confused, they seem both want me to be good but I don't know who to listen to, so I rather let them discuss between themselves. The thing is I need to be convinced not just be told that I cannot do something if someone says I cannot do it, I also need to be convinced that I can do something if others say I can do it.

As someone getting close to having two college degrees, I would strongly suggest applying and exhausting your options before getting a second college degree. What is keeping you from getting a job with your A.A. degree? The job hunt gets you the job. I think a counter-intuitive approach may be warranted: apply for jobs outside of your hometown/where you want to live until you get very good at interviewing. (Based in the UK) Getting a job working for a company now is impossible and total utter bullshit. (Ive only been applying to jobs to make some money to be able to start a business idea from a business model I’ve learnt. Ive also had to put up with so much bullshit and time wasting recruiters and companies for 1 year now and I’m totally depressed and feel hopeless. 1. Recruiters lie through their teeth (they post fake job postings just to collect details, names and cv’s from people) 2. Companies waste your time and they’re overly picky and want to look for the perfect candidate. They’ve got this idea in their silly heads of the perfect candidate so they interview loads of people from which they know plenty of people they have interviewed can do the job because they already have the skills and experience but they repost the job interview or don’t make an offer to the initial batch of people who interviewed and Carry on interviewing more people so they can get closer to their silly unrealistic and fictional idea of the perfect candidate. 3. Companies also waste your time by not offering you the job when they clearly know you can do the job and hit the ground running only because of personal preferences such as the way you look, talk, colour, race etc and then lie and make up false feedback about why they didn’t make you an offer. (And that’s for the companies who do get back to you, let’s not get started about most of the companies who just ghost you and don’t even bother getting back to you) 4. Companies now want you to do a task as part of the interview process depending on the field of work the job is in which takes you 3/4/5 hours to do and then they make up little ideas from your task that they weren’t happy with and decide to not offer you the job based on that and completely disregard the other contents of the task you’ve done correct and the fact that they know you can do the job due to your skills and experience. I’ve been searching for a year now, took 2 months off the job search in the winter and have been interviewing consistently for 6 months and put so much time, energy and effort into getting a job for nothing. For absolutely nothing and I’m sick and tired of it. I’m in my mid twenties and have wasted so many years of my life looking for jobs. I’m depressed, broke, hopeless and literally don’t know what to do anymore. I’ve wasted my life trying to get a job and it’s just never worked out even with experience and a degree. I have learned a business model which I have already started on the side and seen small results with so my long term plan is to use the money from the job to fund my business idea and dream but even getting a job let alone a decent job just to live a respectful normal life in the meantime is so fuxking impossible.

I feel like this guy is completely wrong on some things. He doesn’t have a degree and is really trying to put someone down that has three degrees. As a hiring manager, I will in many cases hire someone with three degrees rather than someone that doesn’t have one. Not having a degree just shows me that the person might not be someone that can accomplish and finish something.

He should join the Military. They will get you the job training and experience. You can get out and then get a job with the Government due to being a vet. They will also send you to school and give you a chance to get some management experience. He may be able to get some bonus money out of the deal also!!

Honestly, while education is great; experience is key! I am an IT manager and have been in the industry since the early 2000's. I started managing people a little over a year ago. I hired my first employee within the last 6 months. I can honestly say what I need on my team are people who can hit the ground running and pieces of paper can't prove that. I would definitely obtain certifications and more importantly hands-on experience through a home lab setup, working on friends machines, internships etc. Hyperfocus your resume and put one degree down instead of all 3. Highlight your abilities and what experience you do have on 1 page or less. Finally when interviewing you must deliver on soft and technical skills questions. GOOD LUCK!

I have the hands on, and then some. Unfortunately when you know too much it can hurt you. I started my IT career as 18 years old, and worked my way up from hardware to a Chief Technology Officer after many years in the field. I have over 20 years of experience in IT. An MBA in technology management, and bachelors degree in computer science. I was the Chief Technology Officer with a great salary. I can’t even get any interviews despite applying, and applying. Other jobs won’t give me a second look because of my previous professional experience. It is unbelievable, and people say how the economy is so great.

Is there any information anywhere on the internet about non-IT, non-programming jobs? It seems everyone foolish enough to pursue university degrees is expected to learn to code and sit in front of a monitor programming 100% of the time. It doesn't matter what I type, all the advice is about IT.

Not quite. I started in 1999 when the internet was just starting and it was not easy to get in the field. It’s always been tough. The biggest problem is skill and experience. That’s what employers want and their expectations are way out of whack.

@@learnitfromwilliam I agree for example ive seen stuff like entry level help desk REQUIRED 2-3 years experience. Must know c++ , JAVA , PHP , SQL . Must have 2 years experience being a admin. This is just a example but this what a lot of entry level jobs want and they pay is not matching their expectations. I should have just gone the trade route. I have done 2 IT internships and haven't even so much has gotten a interview for the simplest of jobs. Now with this virus and everything closed its gonna make things even harder.

No, No, No, No. I graduated with a MBA in 2011 and obtained a second Masters of Science degree in Quantitative Finance in 2013. I have over 600 interviews underneath my belt between 2008 to 2017. I worked in recruiting for one year as a seasonal employment coordinator in 2017 and what I discovered and learned through analysis is that talent acquisition, human resource generalist, hiring managers and directors seek out applicants based on how likeable and relatable the applicant is, nepotism and if the applicant can learn. I'm most cases not all experience, degrees, certifications, and your track record of success and accomplishments mean absolutely nothing. If the powers at be in the organization like you and they think you fit in, they will provide training with a learning curve.
