I finally get my cockatiels to be washed but some of them loves shower but some doesn't. Some enjoys but some doesn't. See who's the one that loves water so much and had a wonderful shower.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
G'day! We're from Australia with 3 native cockatiels.
Ana: Female, DOB 27/09/2020
Ana is a grey pearl cockatiel and she was bald as she was abused by her parents before she's 3 weeks old. She's timid and can be easily scared.
Lemon: Male, DOB 29/10/2020
Lemon is a pied lutino cockatiel with grey pattern on the right wing. Lemon is naughty and lively. He can't leave people even for one moment, he is unable to stay in the cage for too long.
Quishna: Sex Unknown DOB 07/12/2020
Quishna is a pied lutino as well with grey pattern on the left wing. Quishna is the youngest one and he/she is smart and proud - never allow people to touch but he / she is gradually becoming the lead of the 3.
We live as a family, eat and play together!

Dont spray water directly on top of them, do it at an angle. The reaction Ana gave is of a bird who is struggling to breathe! You do very well with your birds, so please keep this in mind for the future :)

So you mean to tell me that when it rains, birds "can't breath" when the water falls directly onto their beaks? I will have to disagree with that statement. You can clearly tell that Ana enjoyed the shower. She would have flown out of the shower if she didn't...

@ShaynaFlowers
@ShaynaFlowers 2 жыл бұрын
@@downhomesunset Not true. "Why do birds often struggle to get out of their cages when left open, despite having been taken out many times and knowing where the door is? I can't really say. Some birds DO get out from under streams falling directly onto them, some stand here and mouth breathe like Ana did. I've seen it enough times to know, but if you'd like more of an indicator aside from the mouth-breathing she also is providing NO bathing reaction at all. Perhaps its a lack of knowledge on where to move, not knowing where the stream ends. Perhaps its an expectation that if its raining, no matter where she moves the water will be there. Despite being wickedly smart, cockatiels aren't very well known for thinking on their feet. They tend to panic or freeze up faced with situations that are overwhelming. That's a pretty heavy stream to them (cockatiels are very small and light) so I could understand the freezing. If you'd like to know the logistics, their nostrils are on top of their beaks so heavy rain falling directly onto them from the top forces its way into open nostrils. That is already very unpleasant, but parrot lungs are also a one-circuit track, they have to breathe twice to get everything out. "There is a one way flow of air in their lungs...thus the lungs receive fresh air during inhalation and again during exhalation In the bird's respiratory system, air first flows through air sacs that direct fresh, oxygenated air into the lungs where gas exchange occurs, both when the bird inhales and when it exhales." When something gets in there, it takes a while to get fully out- including water. This renders it dangerous if the bird were to actually breathe any in, unlike us where we could simply try and cough it out. Rain often falls at an angle, and birds have places to take shelter in severe weather. You often see birds bathing in a nice rain, but I've NEVER seen a bird bathe in an absolute torrent, which a showerhead shooting water directly onto a bird is much the equivalent to in force- however even torrents are still typically blown angled by the wind. The summary answer to your question is likely panic. Fight/Flight/Freeze, tiels tend to choose flight or freeze."

I never showered my parakeets like you did. I set up a small and not to deep bowl for them so they can wash and spray themselves just like in nature. Remember: the need to be able to fly away in case of danger so they never get completely wet like shown in your video. Being completely wet like that also enhances the danger for pneumonia since the down warming them is wet to. Additionally I always kept an eye on their ears so that they wouldnt get water in them since they are not protected. Which is no problem with that afore mentioned bird bath.

@@daviddou1408 a sweater on a dog when it's chilly out is fine, but I agree that cats really shouldn't wear "clothing". Personally I don't see anything wrong with showering birds as long as it's only once in a while and not a regular thing. Much like hamsters they should always have access to a bathing area too. I'm my opinion both the video and the comment are right.

I had budgies that loved to be sprayed down with a fine mist. And I also had some that loved the full bowl of cool water where they would plop into and roll around taking full baths. When they got out of the pool not only were there pin feathers and dust left behind but lots of white flakes of skin that they were shedding. Surprisingly, the bath water would be cloudy white with debris! Baths and showers are wonderful for birds and they love them almost daily especially in hot climates. Sometimes after drying their feathers, I would take a dry water color brush and gently swipe under their neck and face feathers to help flake off dead skin and a ton would fall off. That’s pretty much what they do when they preen themselves. It was so soothing to them they would fall asleep! Word of caution though: never leave a bird unattended even in a tiny puddle of water. They panic easily and have been known to drown simply from their fear of not being able to climb out of the bowl.

you should put water on a plate or something that could work as a mini bathtub instead of washing them yourself. they know how to take a bath if they need to.... and if you still want to do it with your own hands they're way more comfortable with a spray bottle. I don't recommend that you keep doing it if they keep quiet or standing still. if they're enjoying it, you'll see them widen their wings happily.

I had one who caught cold as a baby and dr said to wash and dry her well after every feeding. She got so used to the hair dryer that once I forgot to blow her and she ran to the bathroom and screamed until I came. Always on warm - these are desert birds, they would fluff more if water was warm. Her 26 yr old daughter has never liked baths and will only bathe at a distance on a wet piece of lettuce!

@@V.Hansen. I really don’t think that your lil cutie was struggling to breath…in fact I’m not an expert, nor a vet. But it was interesting watching this video.! I do suppose that there are a bunch of know it alls that figure they know what’s best for your bird. However this video might prove to be detrimental for newer bird owners in that they might try this and hurt their bird by squeezing it too much. So I recommend that you put a disclaimer message that shows up automatically on the very bottom of your video that states a warning like? In the making of this video my bird was not harmed nor traumatized in any way, for any bird that doesn’t like this would squack so loudly you would see it, and it wouldn’t sit so comfortably on the stick for it would be trying desperately trying to get away.
