Why use the Octopus Guard? This stops the turning-in half guard pass.
This is one of those one-off guards that gives you a chance to get a sweep or back take as your half guard is being passed. The control is very similar to a Full Guard Hip Bump sweep, but it used half guard positioning.
My favorite one is the hook version. It is quite powerful once you get them turning and the sweeps are easier than the others.
The butterfly version is the best for back takes since you can extend them away and open some space.
