So we thought we'd show you how this whole process can be done with stuff you likely will already have at home. We show you how to take plastic bottle tops and turn them into coasters, jewellery and keyrings with simple tools. Little tip from a jewellery maker about projects 2 and 3... ... when opening jump rings (the circular chain link that you use to join the plastic to the key chain ) do not pull the two ends apart in the same axis as this is the way you misshape the link from its circular shape. If the link lays flat as a ‘c’ shape when you open it for use... you’re doing it wrong.. Try to open the link the other way (90 degrees from the previous). You will still have your circular shape but the link won’t lay flat on the table when there is an opening. IF done correctly it will look like a spiral of wire has been cut to make the link.This link will be far easier to close and will assist in keeping the round shape in the ring.

For those who are not comfortable with sawing you can purchase certain kinds of scissors from hardware stores such as Trauma Sheers (aka known on the internet as scissors that can cut pennies) or all purpose scissors that cut thick carpet as well as thin metals. Please note though that you have to be careful, I've accidentally pinched or cut myself when cutting overly small and intricate shapes. Also, you will be unsuccessful cutting sheets thicker than the tip of your pinky.

Great video. This reminds me of a video I watched about a girl who tried almost exactly the same thing (making coasters etc) using countertop ovens with baking sheets, progressing to large bakery ovens. Five years on, she's got 26 employees, making $400k/year exporting furniture overseas.

Thanks for making the technique accessible to many people. When my son was little, baby wipes came in the shape of Lego blocks. For years I have had in the back of my mind using recycled plastic to form bricks to solve the homeless crisis. Using recycled plastic to build tiny houses may make sense.

Wall tiles, bowls (using strong metal bowls as mould), cups. I’ve seen a manufactured melting and forming system for sale somewhere. I hope this becomes more common!

Omgosh I have a grandson who would LOVE doing this!!! He is 12, knows the safety rules of cooking, and we have the right oven mitts. Although we will have to use 2 cast iron skillets as the panini press.....

If I remember correctly the #2 recycling (bottle caps) plastic sinks in water whereas the other type floats. This enables recycling operations to easily separate these main types before or after turning into chips.

@@BrothersMake Some soda lids I have noticed have a clearish lining in the top of the lid. Does this need to e removed before melting?

Noooo it is the opposite! PET sinks in water while HDPE floats slowly, and LDPE floats fast. PP also floats but I don't remember if it floats more or less than HDPE. If I recall correctly, out of the common plastics, PET is the densest, PP and HDPE are near the same density as water (hence why they barely float upwards) and LDPE is the least dense. Not sure about PVC and PS, I guess they are less dense than water too.

I can never find Panini Presses when I look in second hand stores, but now that I've seen you do some melting in cans within airfryers... Those are more accessible. But I need some of those silicone gloves.

Those Coaster could Also be made into cute little hexagon shaped jewelry boxes, or counter top tiles, or bathroom tiles, floor tires, the could be used for short molded legs dor furniture, like for dressers, or couch. I still say deck boards would be cool for a Patio

You could polish the pendant more by using a nail buffer block, I use mine to polish old coins for birthday presents (I make personalised coin displays in frames for friends and family) and I find they are brilliant if you work through the 4 sides and bring up a fantastic shine. Plus they are super cheap and last for ages. I got a pack of 4 from my local Poundland a few years ago, and they are a bit grimy now but still work great!

As resilient as this plastic is, you could make several square ones to make tile for backsplashes or tables, etc.

I like the hand tools methods. Its actually where everyone should start out. In woodshop it was as important to use a coping saw and chisels as it was to use a chop saw or table saw. Fine touches are done with the hand tools always. I have a scroll saw I just acquired which is sweet! Its used, but I see that its way to useful to not own one, not too pricy new or used and somerhing everyone should have. I like the use of the griddle too. Smooth surface ones may be harder to come across, but if you keep looking they are out there at thrift.

It always comes back to the $$. and who's watching. I used to separate green glass until one day at our small town transfer station I saw the green glass collection barrel dumped into the regular trash bin. It seems green glass wasn't collected in large enough quantities to pay to have it shipped to a place which did actuality recycle it.

0:51 - Point of fact, that is not a recycling symbol. It's a resin identification code. It was designed to resemble the recycle symbol to fool people into thinking that plastics were easily recycled.

Are plastic shopping bags the safe kinds of plastic to use? That would be so terrific! Lowes gives gray ones & gray would make for a terrific color to make some of these projects with!! Gray is the aesthetically pleasing neutral! For my home anyway! 🙂

@@wendyrudokas some bags are hdpe others can be ldpe, unless they are clearly labelled I'd be careful. Bags are quite different to try, a clothes iron with greaseproof paper (to prevent melting to the iron) might be worth a try.

When I first saw your hatchet handle video, I re-watched it a few times, and then I showed it to my Dad, because we rather have an abundance of old hammer and axe heads that the haldes broke off of. So I started collecting bottle caps, to the point that I've started filling an onion bushel-netbag. Both my Mom and our cleaning lady are concerned that I have become a hoarder. Mom collects shoes and purses, and my Dad has a junkyard, so it runs in the family.

Love your videos, is it possible to make little figures out of the melted plastic, a bit like you would with plastacine or would they not stick together? And if so how quickly would you need to handle and shape the plastic before it becomes too cool to form into shapes?

I asked this question on another YTers video, I'm just curiuous about what people suggest for answers. So it may have been suggested already. When it comes to drilling holes, sanding, polishing etc., why not use heat to melt holes, round edges, or smooth out surfaces? Will it be a good way to create less microplastics or other scraps to recapture for recycling again? I was thinking to use an old broken hair straighenter for polishing surfaces or rounding corners, and a heat gun on a metal dowel for making holes.

The problem with that is that to push a hole through the material it has to be of a constant temperature, which burns the initial edge of the plastic. We have experimented somewhat with heat ‘polishing’ the plastic but never had much luck

Id be interested to see how this works with different materials added in. Stuff like metal powders, mica powder/pigment, glass beads, wire mesh, charcoal, and sand could really have an interesting effect on the properties.

I actually stumbled across this site, whilst looking for ways to recycle screw covers which I aquired from a plumber and have about a thousand of the things, and I must say I'm very glad I did stumble, even though I don't have a flat bread or any other maker I do indeed have an iron, so I guess I could make coasters n such like and paint them as there all white, so look forward to viewing more of your recycling

Really like your videos bros. Do you have any tips? Me and my friends are trying to make a recycled cafe, basically it's your regular cafe, but with 100% recycled materials for the decoration and contribution to reduce wastes, the room for the kitchen we'll use the unused old container somewhere in the harbor, and for the chairs we'll use the old barrels from the nearby pub that they won't use anymore. 😁

I've been watching you KZfaq channel it's been about a month since I found you. I have a question it may sound silly. But have you ever thought about making bricks out of recycled plastic. I'm not joking I was looking at areas that were flooded on the news and thought about how devastating it was to the people caught in it. If bricks could be made from plastic they could be used for creating barriers that could help with high waters. Usually low lying areas that are prone to flooding unfortunately have alot of trash because people use the low lying areas as a dump site. The bricks could be also used to make fences, picnic tables or even benches and it could greatly reduce the amount of plastics going into the landfill or getting into waterways. I know this sounds goofy and I'm probably going to be ripped to shreds by people who are "experts" but I still thought I should ask.

I think this is fantastic. I'm a plastic injection moulding engineer responsible for making around 30 million of these tops a day. If you see the logo with a B in a triangle that's one of ours at Bericap in Hull. We often have to waste a lot of caps during colour changes or produce molten purgings when emptying a machine. I can never think of any good uses for the waste polymer but you guys are very creative. We do recycle our waste I must add. If your ever passing I'm sure we could donate a few to your stock levels 😄

I really need to update a good news. I got amazing results with silicone mats on 180C with hdpe instead of using cooking paper or teflon mats. There is no need to sand or even a single polish. The plastic sheet is as shiny and smooth as glass. The sheet is incredibly slippery. I never expect that shine result without any polish in hdpe.

that would make sense. only working to 180-230C, smooth silicone sheets would handle that temperature just fine. my wife thinks i'm crazy...

@@robthomas7392 silicone may not be handle more than 200 celcius degree. I don't suggest to go beyond 200 c degree

Very cool video and ideas! Drinks cans and the tabs can especially be upcycled into many, many items from jewellery to ashtrays. I love making and wearing chains from the ringpulls. And of course, if you don't have the time or resources to upcycle your waste, while not as good, you can also look up how to recycle many unusual items. You get your regular household recycling but many supermarkets or local councils offer stations for items such as batteries, plastic bags, bottle banks etc,. Please look up if you can recycle items you didn't think you could in your local area, everyone! I've started recycling plastic bags and packaging, like from bread and cereal, recently, as I discovered a local shop has a recycling station for them.

How long do the heated sheets stay soft enough to work with? Would it be possible to slump them into a bowl shape?

It should be. From my own experience with a heat gun and pvc the plastic remains pliable for a brief while. Long enough to mould
