Wow I’m 50 years old and I’ve been a fan since my cousin took me to a Van Halen concert in 1979 in Atlanta and life went on following them and became just a everyday stuff. Fast forward till I read the book and a huge impulse of Eddie and Van Halen and I’m all in. I hope he knows on the lives he changed and inspired. Huge impact on wanting to learn more like I’m a student and I’ve got so much incredible stuff I’m learning like he left for us to gather and learn!!!

Always love your lessons David but the VH stuff you've done is stupendous..... When he died there was enormous KZfaq content.... Some of it was up there with yours.... Like Ben Eller's..... Phil X..... Shuttup and play guitar.... And the audio interview with him by Guitar World journalist after their first tour (3rd on the bill! ) so probably 1979?...and he chats away strumming an old strat unplugged and licks pour out of him.... Lots from albums 2 3 and 4!!.... And there's this lovely warm sounding talkative dude...infectious laughter... Then he plays both the solos from Cream's Crossroads!!!.... His playing was a gift.... I love playing along to some of those huge riffs but, man, his hands and soul were wired differently!!

Eddie was one of a kind. He made me want to play, and I did. 25 years later, and I still bang away from time to time. There is some solace that Wolf is out there doing his own thing. He said that he had to learn on his own, because his Dad was "Eddie Van Halen", and that he had to start from scratch. Mammoth WVH is a killer record.

He started doing chicken pickin from that hybrid pull off phrase or at least I heard it first on 84 with the Holdsworth influence. You hear it on drop dead legs, pleasure dome and some tracks on balance and VH3. It’s really neat and thank you for covering this lick! It’s one of the coolest from that video!!
@Jasonfurrofficial2 жыл бұрын
Dave! Great job as always! The first "blues" lick is a variation of the Fools intro lick. The bonus lick is straight up Allen Holdsworth until he pull off to the open string. Funny that other than the chicken picking technique, you hear all these licks on the Van Halen 3 album. There is so much noodling and long songs on that album, you hear a lot of what Eddie wouldn't normally do. VH 3 was really a Eddie Van Halen solo album and you hear some of these new licks on that album. Love it bro!

Awesome lesson dude! Truly brilliant channel too thank you for your work! There are moments in some of these licks that remind me of those early Richie Sambora solos. He doesn’t seem to get talked about as much as other 80’s players but he still has some seriously mean licks. Some other players I’ve haven’t noticed you included yet would be John Frusciante, Dave Navarro, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, Peter Green... a bit more leftfield but Steve Hillage is also another phenomenal, influential old player who seems to be quite under the radar

_"With everything going on in this world."_ I know what you mean. But it's important to remember that media by it's very nature seeks out all of the bad and terrible things that happen, while the everyday good that people do and the many more acts of compassion happen so much more often that they are not considered newsworthy for the very reason they occur far more often. And that was just media before the internet, witch has it's own problems that are still relatively new to humanity and also massively exacerbates the feeling of being oppressed by everything that's going on. I'm certainly not saying things aren't extra crazy at this time in our history, but it's good to remember that most of humanity just want us all to have peace and prosperity (I believe we could too, it's just a matter of societal maturity). Those people just aren't making the news anywhere near as often as those who create problems, so it's easy to feel like things are even worse than they are. So whatever your "side" or beliefs people, things are not as bad as the media we are all slammed by would have us believe. Hang in there everyone. Humanity has been through worse and still kept evolving and becoming more mature over time. I wish you all my fellow Earthlings peace and prosperity. ^-^
