also holding shift and clicking anywhere in the timeline will play from that point like in sony vegas! just found this out recently much easier than going up to the top of the grid locking in where you wanna start play from to play now you can hold shift and click at any point on the project to play from there

Hey Nathan, if you use the fade in vocal fx with the big reverb, try to reverse the vocals you use first then bounce with fx and then reverse it again. This way you pick up the beginning of the sound of the sample and not the end.

In Studio One you select the exact parts you want the fx to play from and automatically inserts the delay at those point. No sends, no bus, no duplicate tracks. Its pretty amazing...

Are you referring to FX automation? That's a basic function in all major DAWs. Along with automating any parameter of a plug in.

@@AJS421 Not exactly. You select and highlight a part of the track, drag and drop directly on that highlighted track any FX from your FX folder. Then only that section of the entire track will get that FX. No automation or duplicate track necessary. Once it done, when you select that part all the parameters will show up in a “ info” window on the left side. You can put as many different FX on a continuous track without automation, send, bussing, or split. It is a very efficient and simple process.

I agree completely theres a million ways to do something, I don't know if you have tried but I usually do it in two channels like you did (Real vocal in one and the delay in the second) but instead of using the automation I would cut the delay audio file and leave only the things I want to be repeated and on the plugin use wet only and no dry

Great tips - by the way the clipping is down to cpu maxing out - probably combination of logic and your recording software maxing out cpu usage. One alternative is to use an external capture device for vids.

that clicking is exactly the same sound that happens to me but then in fl studio on windows when i get underruns, most of the time it is meaning the audio interface cant keep up, adjusting the buffer size of your audio interface can easily fix this (this is also where you can set a better latency for recording) edit: i was talking about 11:28

I dont know if you fix the clicky sound but you always wants to have the lowest buffer size for recording vocals and monitoring in real time (low input latency. And then increase the buffer size to the max amount so you can have the best audio quality when mastering the track with 0 artifacts.

Hello Nathan, what would you call the second effect… I use Cubase and don’t have a lot of plugins as I’m more of a rapper and don’t know a lot about mixing I wanted to search for an easier way to make this second “suck up”-effect.

Nathan my guy, could you do a video like this for gutturals? After a vocal take I’m always left feeling like it’s bland and boring. This tricks are neat. But not very fitting within metal. It would be cool if you broadened your genre for these videos for us who doesn’t necessarily fall into the category of mainstream music. Those videos are amazingly entertaining and educational regardless. Thank you so much!

Well here's the question for me do you process the vocals before ? Do you have the vocalist singing to the microphone then run the vocals through processing before it goes into the computer.. Or do you take the vocalist and the mic record them raw then do vocal processing? I've been in musician all my life and one of the hardest things that I still don't understand is getting vocals pushed up front into the mix and they have that quietness sound.. it's a one vocal track it's one take but it sounds, completely alone and isolated in the mix it sounds amazing and I don't know if I need to spend millions of dollars to get the sound or if I'm missing some type of using compression or limiters or whatever the hell it is.. but my problem is getting the vocal upfront quiet and sounding clear and isolated in the stereo spectrum I guess I need to go to engineering school.. I don't have computer software I don't have these plug-ins and that's the problem that I'm finding on KZfaq is finding somebody who is using computer recording and digital recording but is using basics like eqs, dithers, and the simple basics.. I wish there was a channel that just basically showed hey you have this program well I'll show you how to mix using the plugins that come with the software I use acid pro it seems like a lot of people don't use acid pro they're using other software..

I don't think you need to worry so much about finding someone who uses the same DAW as you...as EQ and compression is universal and translates from DAW to DAW. IF you truly learn to understand EQ and compression, you will be able to apply that to any DAW...also any real world scenario. I'm not sure what you mean by 'getting vocal up front quiet'. do you mean bringing a quiet vocal to the front of the mix? Regardless, the first steps are to understand EQ and Compression. just for starters, you'll want to use reductive eq to cut out any unwanted frequencies from your vocal, then you can start compressing.. perhaps with a fet style limiter to control your peaks followed by a second compressor that you hit a little harder (valve compressors are great for this) which will really limit your vocals dynamic range....meaning your very quiet / low volume vocal moments will now be at a much closer volume to the more intense vocal parts... vice versa. in other words, EVERY part of your vocal is now up front and center. of course you will need to add make up gain after applying the compression. From here you can boost any frequencies that you wish to bring out qualities of the vocal. At this point you should have a very up front and clear vocal.. and you can start using sends to add any FX like delay, reverb, etc on your FX bus. This is just a very basic overview to a common approach in mixing vocals. All processing will be doing post vocal recording in your DAW unless you have outboard gear or something like an apollo to print your FX on the way in. Just focus on getting good levels and sound from your mic on the way in. hope this helps. cheers.

Fantastic vox design tutorial bro ^_^ Just btw, that clicking sound to me like buffer underruns caused by high CPU usage in your DAW. My guess is that you didn't increase your buffer size after recording those vox, because you'll need to set your buffsize up quite a bit after you've done tracking / recording so you can mix and stack VSTs without glitches. It could also be a myriad of things tbh, either CPU strength, background processes, too high recording sample rates (96khz is my absolute max tracking rate) I keep forgetting i have Guitar Rig installed so i really appreciate finding a new way to use it for not only my bass but for vocals, so I rly appreciate it

You could - just up to your preference in workflow. Not a "wrong" or "right" Same thing with using a bus instead - plenty of reasons you'd want to do that - like if I wanted to really process the delay completely separate from the lead vocal in a way that I could not do just with the delay - I would 100% create a bus and process it independently. For every technique - there's like 5 ways of doing it.

Thanks for interesting content, although those prominent clicks are killing listening :( Pretty hard to focus they are so loud. Kind of surprising content about music production is hurt by such things. Like channel about making videos would present out of focus one ;-P What did the Producer say about those millions of details done good? ;) But anyway appreciating technics you are sharing. :)

To teach how he accomplished various sounds with these common plugin's that are used by a large portion of his audience. Im sure you could still accomplish a variation of these effects with stock and free plugin's. Why would he not mention them just because someone else might not have them?
