3 Exercises to Alleviate Arm Nerve Pain

Today' video covers rehab exercises for pain related to the three primary peripheral nerves that start in the neck and run down the arm.
The median nerve begins at the neck, like our the other peripheral nerves mentioned in the video (ulnar and radial) and receives contributions from many nerve roots (C5-T1). The nerve then courses down the arm, giving sensation to the palm side of the hand, the thumb, index, middle and the lateral half of the ring finger. It also provides motor input to most of the muscles that move our wrist and fingers into flexion (imagine making a fist).
The ulnar nerve is made up of the C8 and T1 neck branches and runs down the inside of the forearm to the pinky and inner side of the ring finger.
The radial nerve provides motor innervation to the triceps and the wrist/finger extensor muscles. The nerve also relays sensory input from most of the back of the hand and fingers (except the pinky and medial half of the ring finger).

I hand milked cows for 10+ years. Developed a terrible tingling pain. Recently it was almost debilitating. I assumed I had carpal tunnel. Did the exercises over the years. They helped a little. Turns out my pain was from the radial nerve. The flossing exercise improved my symptoms immediately. A couple of weeks later, I’m basically pain free for the first time since about 2008. Thank you doesn’t begin to convey how grateful I am for your video. ❤️

Very clear explanation and definitely helpful excercise. I suffered from arm numbness for 2 months and can't sleep well in last couples of week due to painful arm. Medicine to relieve pain is useless to me. The excercise gave me immediate improvement and I can sleep better last night. I have to say infinite thank you to you, Dr Tom.😘

I can't believe what I am watching. So here is my story: In September 2020, I fell and dislocated my elbow. After the initial night of the accident, I could no longer feel or move my arm and hand. I had an x-ray, and the ER doctor said I had a hair fracture on my elbow, but they did not put a cast. When I saw the orthopedic, he said he was worried and that I needed PT. After doing PT for 4 months, my arm and hand remained numb. So, after requesting an MRI because the pain was under my arm by my shoulder, the MRI came back normal. But I could not lift my arm above my waist. Anyway, the Orthopedic could not help me. He didn't understand why I could not move my arm. He made me feel like I was lying. It took me about 2 years to begin moving and feeling my arm; it still hurts and feels a tingling sensation in my fingers. Sometimes, I'll tighten the sensation in my hand. After so long, you are the first person who describes what I feel and gives an exercise to relieve the pain. Thank you!

This is just what I needed. It's amazing what you can find on the Internet. Yesterday I went for my first bike ride in about 25 years and after about a half an hour, I found that my thumb side of my hand was tingling and had a little pain in my elbow. This video shows me that it was my medial nerve. I don't know why it's bothering me at this point in my life at the age of 64 but I'm glad I found this.

I’m glad the video was useful. The position of the wrists when holding the handlebars on a bike can reduce blood flow to the median nerve, which may explain why you developed these symptoms during this activity.

I can’t thank you enough for you putting together this lifechanging video! I’ve been suffering for many months, each night getting progressively worse with numbness in all fingers and pins/needles, really affecting my sleep. I’m suffering -- or now I can say I was suffering - from all three nerves being pinched (I was waking up each morning with my hand cramped and curled, with three fingers acting like they were locked…recently, it wasn’t going away during the day and staying cramped and wanting to curl…really scary!). After just one day of doing the flossing it was better! I slept that night for the first time in I can’t remember without terrible pins and needles all night long! I’m writing this on day 3…I just can’t believe my days of suffering are truly over! I’m truly grateful I discovered your video…if you help no one else, know that you helped change my life for the better...thank you!!!🌻

I had a blood examination too and she hit a nerve 7 days ago. I felt a sharp pain in my wrist. I just started doing the one exercise and it is already releasing the pain when I hyper extend. Will keep doing these daily. Nutrition helps too. B Vitamine complex and foods high and alpha lipoic acid for nerve regeneration. I read up on the peer reviewed studies. I mentally feel better too eating these foods, hence their effect on the nervous system.

Hello Sir! I find this video affective. I have severe pain in my left arm, shoulder and neck as well as upper left area of chest and back. I'm an anxiety patients and whenever I stress about anything it gets worst. It also gives me nightmares as if I'm getting heart attack or something. This pain is such a disress and it got intense after I got a panic attack few days back. Please suggest something to get relief from this pain.

Thank you so much for these invaluable therapy sessions! I myself been experiencing right arm to wrist pain for the last 3-4 years. I’m 36 now and have tried many therapy treatments of which none worked for me so far! Here in the UK it’s quite difficult to get proper treatments using the national health systems that we are all contributing to and yet no support or help when needed! I have been put on physio therapy sessions of which never helped, in fact made my arm pain much worst and when I raised it with therapists they said it’s normal and would go away in couple of hours of which never happened, in fact I was with the same pain for good 2 days after my physio sessions. I’m now in a state where I have severe pain in my right arm staring from my armpit all the way to my wrist, but it varies and sometimes its all over the place, other times it’s just the wrist and sometimes just the arm, when I press it hard either my other hand or push the pain area against something too hard it feels a little better but not much! Just very recently in fact as I’m typing I’m experiencing quite severe pain same as before and it’s driving me crazy, it’s very unbearable! Any idea what this could be related to?

Sorry to hear that. I wouldn’t recommend testing each position and seeing which one most closely triggers your symptoms. Then, use that movement (gently) to help improve nerve health.

@@ralphboustani1409 I'm doing much better. I tried the exercises but didn't follow through with them due to pain. I went to see a chiropractor for one session. She did a little work. I guess with time the pain has alleviated. I'm still not able to do a full pushup but I have been in the gym for the past four days working out and lifting lightly.
