I have worked in warehousing. I would never do this unless it was a brand new and untreated pallet. Most pallets at some point get all sorts of nasty chemicals spilled on them. Pallets are reused hundreds of times and you never know what has been on them

You are so correct, I have seen people get crappy pallets and use for fire to cook food over the flames. They risk their health and lives using pallets.

Was going to say this, don't use this for plants you plan to consume. Only use this for decorative plants. Sadly pallets aren't the most aesthetic look.

Only one thing i'd suggest, If that unit will be outdoors in the weather, you should use Titebond 2 or 3 on every joint, As that pallet wood starts to absorb moisture the brads will let loose, Or 1 1/4 deck screws will stand the outside. Great idea for sure.

Industry is generally really good at reusing pallets hundreds of times until they're in far worse condition than this. I was working in a department store that was dealing with dozens of pallets a day when pallet crafting first got popular, and they never looked this nice... And we still chained them up to avoid letting them be stolen instead of reused.

I was going to say something along the same lines. I’ve built pallets my whole life, my family has owned a pallet business since 1982 and I was gonna point of that unless you can find a very soft wood most likely pine pallet that the boards will but come off that easy.

I've been making these for years and selling them, and you need to line the bottom of the wood other wise it will rott. Also spray with wood spray paint to make the wood water proof so that they don't Rott.. its the same with out door furniture. Also alot of pallets have been sat out in the rain etc so make sure any pallets you do get put them somewhere warm like inside to dry the wood out.... The wood spray paint you will get at B&Ms if in the US you have that store or any hardware store I'm Scottish. But please take heed as you don't want your hard wood work ruined in the first 3 months.... sorry for spelling mistakes. I make thinks, don't write alot. 🤣🤣 xx

Yes, your herbs can grow that big but there are a few issues with that: 1) not everyone has the space to let their herbs go crazy 2) unkept herbs can look like weeds if you don't tend to it and 3) you might be giving your herbs too much nitrogen. If you have even a small planter, you can grow a satisfactory amount of herbs if you let it bush out. Also, for any and all edible plants, fertilize with anything that has the highest number last (i.e. lots of Potassium, like 315)

Safety first: ensure the pallet isn't made with chemically treated timber as this leaches into the soil and into you if you're growing edible plants. Look for a stamp on the pallet indicating if it's safe or not. (Google the stamps). Otherwise, enjoy your upcycled pallet.

This wood isn't treated, so it will quickly get water damage. The soil will retain water too, but you didn't use any kind of liner to protect the wood. And because it will swell and warp, those nails will soon pull out. An improvement would be to use an outdoor stain or paint on the wood, get pots that fit in or get liner and drill holes in the wood and liner for water drainage. And use screws.

Lots of places to get good pallets, you just have to know who to ask, or where to find them. Some people make money on them, picking them up from places that have them and you are allowed to take them, then you also have to know where you take them to get paid for them!!! I know this only because I do know people who do this for extra money!!!! And it's all legal!!!

The first one, the herb garden. We did this 3 years ago on the first lockdown. I fixed 2 pieces of wood to the bottom to lift it 2 feet off the ground and take the weight, and it just needed 2 small brackets at the top to hold it against the wall. We then planted it with herbs and salad leaves.

Most pallets are made from hardwood and very difficult to nail into with a hammer. We had to bust up used pallets at work, and eventually, we used a saw to cut them up to avoid the nails/staples used in their manufacturing. I also agree they are often saturated with toxic chemicals. That's 40+ years of experience.

Notice that was the only ‘nicer’ looking pallet in the pile? It looked as if someone already sanded it down & gently placed it on the junk pile. Pass. I wouldn’t trust what the wood could have absorbed. If you could make it as a window box holder, so you can grow your herbs in a clean window box, then maybe ok, but not just dirt. Also, most people don’t have a garage full of tools you’d need to do this.

That first pallet herb garden could easily be scaled up to accommodate an entire side of a deck or patio and made into a veggie garden. Perfect for those living in a large city without access to property for a small veggie garden.

These pallets are usually pressure sprayed with preservatives don't use them for growing food. If you must then line each trough with a heavy duty plastic

If using pallets for food, please only use heat treated pallets. They are the only ones you can safely use. All others are treated with BAD chemicals.

Fantastic idea to recycle, HOWEVER!! IT SHOULD BE CLEARLY STATED THAT USING PALLETS CAN BE DANGEROUS. YOU HAVE TO WATTCH FOR TREATMENT MARKINGS. SOME ARE TOXIC! MB means methanol bromine which is toxic. Do not use for food or any interior application. HT means heat treated. Most pallets will have markings, IF they do not you cannot be sure it's treatment process and do not use for food. USE ONLY HT STAMPED PALLETS FOR FOOD. 👍

Just an FYI You need to be careful regarding the type of wood you use if you are growing edibles. Most wood used in pallets are loaded with chemicals. treated with methyl bromide - a toxic pesticide that has been linked to human health issues. But would be ok for flowers

Methyl bromide dissipates within 48 hours of treatment. It's used in shipping containers if an untreated pallet is in there ,then stamped to say so. It's harmless

Since when did gardening not require labor (if you're not putting some real work into a garden, you're lucky or someone else is doing it. 😅) It's an awesome idea and naturally you have to make it work for you. I love the garden pallet idea ❤.

Well, some people don't have much or any actual ground property to plant a small veggie or herb garden. There are places called Metropolitan cities and homes often have a 6'X4' outdoor deck a few hundred feet in the air. The first example, with some easy tweaks, can build a vertical garden for people without property or that live in apartments. Additionally, they aren't actually making veggie gardens. The first is herbs and the next is an outdoor, garage repotting table. They aren't growing carrots and lettuces in those repurposed pallets.

I'm not even concerned about the finished product. Very few people are repurposing pallets. So, not everyone is copying any given idea.

The “h” in herbs is silent. Next, that’s a lot of work for a herb garden since you can just put them in pots.

@@trevorbest-gn2dqWell considering she has an American or possibly Canadian English accent Id expect her to say the word Herb with a silent H. This isn't the UK. People that do pronounce the H are grammatically incorrect here in the US
@JasonBohl
@JasonBohl 11 ай бұрын
Also the English borrowed the word from the French and in French the H is silent. Go even further and it was borrowed from Latin where again it was silent. However to match spelling the English decided to add the H pronunciation of the word. Therefore the American English way of saying the word is more correct than the British pronunciation.

One problem wood and water do not mix. Especially when you have sod that holds moisture sitting against the boards. We get very little rain here but yet the bottom of our fence boards are decaying and they are off the ground slightly and made for weather. Pallets are not and I'm not saying this is a bad idea. I'm saying a lot more needs to be done and I think you know this but trying to make it look quick and easier than it is. If not you'll find out soon enough.
