love the glass idea. covered my island with s sheet of glass. several years ago i needed an inexpensive backsplash but wanted the look of stainless steel. hated grout so i ended up using roof flashing. comes in a roll and you can find it in any home supply store like home depot or lowes. there is also copper. cleans up just like stainless and so far have found nothing i want to replace it with.

I like the glass idea!! WOW MY BRAIN IS LITERALLY POPPING WITH IDEAS.....think about it.....picture a huge fish tank and putting in the cool background ...most use the typical coral reef and blue/greenish water scenes... imagine if you install the glass backsplash in such a way that you literally can change whenever you’re bored!!

Best ever No-backsplash back splash is a piece of quarter inch thick cut to size mirror!!!! super easy to clean, doubles the visual space, just call glass supplier, give measurements, have them "EDGE" the glass, bring it home, apply caulk and hang. in China, a mirror in the kitchen is good luck.
@topherjoe1

or go to the dollar store and get 40 mirrors in a frame or just frames and glass and use those for your back splash. Have to cut for plugs though,,,,and you CAN sand smooth glass.

Huh? My point was that a drop ceiling light lens can be cut easily without cracking at Lowes using their plexiglass cutter. I never suggested where it could or couldn't be used. Your point is irrelevant. But to your point plexiglass can be used as a backsplash except of course behind the stove which goes without saying. The only other danger to using plexiglass as a backsplash could be if flames come out of your sink faucet instead of water.

Caroline B Grout is the tan stuff that you see between and around the bottle caps. It comes in many different colors to match whatever tiles are being installed. It's a mixture used to seal the spaces between tile. When tile is installed, it's installed loose, just cemented to the wall, then grout is put on to seal and bond everything together. It dries hard like cement. You could probably get more information on it in a home improvement store.
@ewan2734
@ewan2734 6 жыл бұрын
Caroline B you have a board a silicon and caps .you stick caps to board by using silicon then prepere a grouting what you can make yourself from pack mixing thing or buy ready made in plastic containers (save you money come I. Smalley boxes or tu es even gór repairs) .you feel up gaps and level grout with some leveling sipper what is plastic handle with rubber end ....rubber wippping grout and don't let him stick to it .You can use also metal one but for metal all stuck and is Holly mess. You wait 24 h usually and then you take dump cloth or sponge and wipe off excess from your caps . Then you need seal the grout by using some hardener and a plique according to instruction to grout ....that seal it from dirt and you can wipe it later when using with detergent or I use steam to wipe them all and ones a month steam a grout to clean them perfectly . It can be great fun on last stage for kids to make all this little sparkly bit to shine hahaha. .. I make with my dad flour in our bathroom from lively mosaic in aqua blue haha haha 30 years later are shiny like before . You can make the same technique with colourful glas beads or Italian mosaic on tables and coffee tables .

Removeable wallpaper would work for that. I had a roommate that did that to cabinet doors in the kitchen to brighten up the place. I guess their idea of "inexpensive" is not the same as mine. LOL. I'm not a fan of MDF-- it does not handle moisture well. You'd be better off using pressure treated plywood, greenboard, or something designed to be water resistant. Glass for a backsplash should probably be tempered. Plexiglass (acrylic) can be used instead, but it can yellow over time and scratches easily. Here are a few suggestions: 1. Shelf paper/lining with a coat of polyurethane over it- You can find different patterns/colors. If it is already waterproof you may not even need to use poly. 2. Self adhering vinyl floor tiles (if you want a tall backsplash). Just use a little extra 3M spray adhesive. 3. A 1x6 pine board primed and painted. You can paint patterns or just go with solid color. 4. Foil tape (if you want a metallic look). Prices vary but some of it is inexpensive.

instead of glass, why not just use some of the nice and heavy duty pixie glass that they also have at Home Depot! I LOVE using pixie glass for DIY art projects, and if you want a random size that they don't already sell they'll cut it for you there at Home Depot. Pixie glass is just so much more durable, cheaper, a Lot easier to replace and not as dangerous ( if you have to worry about kids runnung around or people bumping into it). It's alsl not as big of a deal if someone (or you ) happen to break it while you're trying to take it down to switch out whatever you're displaying behind it! :) ☆just a lil different material * idea * ta maybe play around with & consider☆ xxo ♡ xxo

Terrible idea! NO! If you want the bottle caps just pour concrete (the kind for countertops) to fill into the spaces between the bottle caps. MDF is compressed wood 'product' which swells and molds when wet- even from condensation or humidity. Plus it absorbs water from the grout, which will make it crack. (the grout)

Whoops, I fell for this clickbait title. Yeah...not DIY for an apartment where it needs to be temporary and cannot make holes in anything. I'm just trying to prevent grease splatter from sticking to the paint behind the stove. I think I'll just tape up a sheet of parchment paper or aluminum foil and pray that grease will somewhat stick to it because temporary wallpaper is really expensive.

Ridiculous options! Sticking 1-inch diameter bottle cops along a back splash of a 10 x 12 kitchen - about 240 square feet to cover and about two thousand five hundred bottle caps - Yikes! Worse yet, he mounts them on MDF! Just Great for wet locations, right? Don't let this guy anywhere near your kitchen!

Watch the video again. 1. The bottle caps get mounted directly to your wall in a real life situation, and then are grouted; 2. The MDF was only used for his demo!

OK, he uses grout to adhere them to drywall, then grouts them n place. Count the caps (143 in that finished piece) and price a gross ($8 on Amazon), then calculate (3/8" dab) the sealant required for 144 caps at $6.70 + Ship (Amazon) and, then the extraordinary amount of grouting requires (No 1/16th inch grout line here) and you will have spent have again as much for this 'look' as if you simply purchased 12 x 12 metallic tile sheets instead - Splashback Tile Silver Penny Round 12 in. x 12 in. x 8 mm Stainless Steel Metal Floor and Wall Tile $16.99 SqFT (Home Depot) vs. $14.70 for the glue on your own bottle cap route. Notice that O's fave Contractor brought on sample on MDF (not a square of Drywall), the he built while the MDF laid flat on a table - no gravity to deal with.

"DIDON'T"...wouldn't that be "Do It Don't"? I'd think "Don't DIY" would make more sense, but apparently talk show hosts don't think their banter out beforehand.

Glass is a terrible idea. The glass would need to be tempered. Not a cheap or diy. The bottle caps seem ok if you want gigantic grout lines. cementboard is fine as long as don't mind ugly joints.

A year later..useless. The main purpose of a backsplash is the cleanability of it. You know, cleaning what was 'splashed' on it. Durp.

MDF is a terrible idea for a back splash. MDF will absorb water like a sponge and will swell accordingly. So you sealed the cement board but not the MDF? Wow. Anyway. Getting a clean cut on cement board is near impossible. Don't use this for a back splash. This guy may be showing you things that look neat. But he has no idea hat he is talking about. Trust me.
