We gave interior designers Noz Nozawa, Erick Garcia, and Mandy Cheng a photo of the same empty dining room-then asked each of them to create a design for it in their particular style, however they pleased. Three artists, one canvas, each bringing something different to the space. See which designer comes closest to creating your ideal formal dining room.

That was interesting. I like hearing their thought processes. I was thinking that a formal, dedicated dining room for me is a hunkering down place, though, where family and friends hopefully will linger over Sunday dinner or holiday meals. So cozy, inviting, and comfortable would be the vibe. I live in a cool, rainy place so that would be the goal. If I’d seen a big patio with barbecue and tables outside the dining room window in a sunnier climate, then opening up the windows as a door would be logical, but the brief didn’t show that. I guess you get to “make your own ending.” lol

I absolutely love what Noz did with her walls. It feels almost cottage core, but is offset by her courageous furniture choices. Mandy's room is the room that feels the most approachable and realistic to me, but I really don't like her wallpaper choice, although I really appreciate her use of colour. Ericks room has the most beautiful doors, I am in love with his chairs, but overall, his room seems too empty and cold to me.

Love all 3 but honestly, like some of the other videos in this series, I kinda wish that the designers are completely restricted to design within the walls. I think it’s better for us viewers to take inspirations from this when they are not allowed to basically redesign the house. Knocking down main walls, changing windows or even adding an entire hallway feels so unrealistic . In another video, one designer even relocated the home from a wooded area to a hill top beach front property and added a revolving wall plus an open skylight ceiling. So ridiculous. I know plenty of wealthy clients do asks for these changes but I feel like we’re truly able to see their interior design skills from how different they transform a simple room while being restricted within the walls and not allowed to make structural or architectural changes. I think that’s more entertaining.
@huntere6684

I thought the same thing at first, but honestly I feel like it’s nice for designers to be able to share their full vision without the constraints of “reality” or the “every day”. I definitely think I would be a nice challenge on one or two videos (or a separate Series) but it’s refreshing to see creatives be creatives and let their vision come to.

Noz’s room is a lot, but I do really love it. There’s a fun about that space that makes the size seem less intimidating. Easily my favorite, hands down; and if I didn’t need to clean all those fingers, I would have this room. Mandy’s feel more like something I would have for a formal family space, large and open, can fit everyone into the room for Xmas. The kind of space that can be used all year round and opened up for larger gatherings, loose parties, or warm evenings for bbqs. Eric’s…I dunno, it feels colder, more formal and grand, less personal, a gorgeous space but not somewhere I would really relax, even for a meal. I would absolutely use the space as a dining room for formal and business meals, but I don’t think I would intentionally enter without needing to do something related to those formal occasions; like setting the table or prepping the space.

Like if you came over for a dinner party every now and then you'd enjoy yourself, but if it was any more than that you'd just be overwhelmed. If that makes any sense. yeah but I think that's kinda the point of the challenge, they have absolutely no limits so they can see where their imagination takes them. having a restriction makes it more practical, yes, but it doesn't have to be practical, this basically just serves as an outlet to express their style.

Agreed! Some, like Noz, take ridiculous liberties. Assuming there's an outside behind a indoor door so you can add a window with a view? As an architect, this really irks me.

absolutely adore the way noz is so bold and daring and i'm always so mesmerized by where she even gets her design from. but that room is so ecclectic that the picture alone is actually triggering something in me that is making me nauseous so i can only imagine how it would be if i'd walk in there. haha! however pieces by pieces, yes girl!

I really loved Mandy & Noz's designs! Noz's was their typical eclectic whimsy, which I love to love from afar. I can definitely see a kid-free, fun person having that space. I personally think it's too much for me, but it all made sense. I really appreciated those hand sconces and the window frames. Mandy's was almost spot on for me, except for that wallpaper & mirror (yikes). I would've loved Noz's wallpaper in there instead, tbh. I think it was pretty timeless, as far as modern spaces go and it would fit most people. I also love how practical those doors & furniture were. Erick's was frankly sad and impractical. Pests in the dining area is not a good look & you better break out the space heaters in the winter, because even in Napa it gets cold. Also, that poor olive tree better be fake, because that thing'll suffer shoved in the corner there. I also wouldn't subject an art piece from an artist I love to the elements like that (museum glass cage for you). It was very Oatmeal Last Supper by way of Anthropologie. There, I said it. That all being said, each space was very inspired and I think indicative of the designer.

Noz’s design was so fun & eclectic and Honestly, it was the most fun! A dining room should have character, and it just shows with her design ❤. Erik’s one is pretty good too, but more safe & practical. But, Noz’s design is truly fun especially since so many people always want the same predictable designs. I think making a dining room space fun would make the place more inviting tbh.

Erick's design is basically a nod to an Italian Villa - 16th Century classic design. Noz's design is basically a nod to an English Tudor dining hall - also 16th century classic design, my absolute favorite. Mandy's reminds me a bit of a child's playroom with a random mix of no particular style, unsophisticated and frankly a bit on the bland side. Art and beauty is in the eye of the beholder but yeah, I gotta say that twisted hands chandelier is a bit disturbing. As always, great design, good ideas and lots of inspiration. A really fun series to watch - thanks, AD!

I LOVED Noz furniture choices SOOOO MUCH! and I realized how wild I'm ready to be with it. But the wallpaper and the missed opportunity of having some interior-exterior ACTUAL connection (Louvered DOORS or something similar with FULL opening)...also made me realize to what extent and in what I would go a bit crazy with color and opening.

This was fun! Erick's design is very nice, a little stark especially with the concrete floor, very cohesive except for the art on the wall which is somehow too different. Mandy's design is what I personally love. I'd work, study, eat and do everything else I could in that room. It feels very lively and perfectly balanced in every manner. Erick's design feels very bland. Even though it feels open and very village like (we have those brick design walls in our village), it is still very empty. I feel like Noz always destroys the space. It feels so cluttered and congested. There's always too much information to handle at once.
