It appears perhaps more than one of these was made in the late 50s and Keith Richards of the Rolling stones owned on at one point in time that he traded away and is now coming up for auction! We will have to see what it sells for.

Description:
If you're anything like me and love the history and all the strange guitars that Gibson has produced in its life time, you've likely ran into this guitar before and had NO IDEA what it was called and google failed you when searching for "3 Knob Les Paul Custom Black", "Les Paul Custom With Knob instead of Toggle Switch" or " 3 Knobs in a Row Les Paul Custom." It wasn't until I found this guitar for sale by a seller in Japan that I finally found the correct keyword to unlock the mystery of this 3 Pickup, 3 Knob, 1 Knob instead of a Toggle switch les Paul custom.
Mickey Baker Model.
This instrument was first birthed in 1957 and was made for a guy named Mickey Baker. Rumor on the street is that this was the first PAF outfitted Les Paul Custom - so that is a fun factoid! It incorporated the design of the original ES-5 and blended it with a Les Paul Custom. You now have a master tone knob instead of a pickup selector switch and you can 3 independent volume controls for each of your three pickups! This guitar has SO MANY tonal possibilities it isn't even funny.
Gibson Reissued these from 1998-2004 as special orders only (likely from a catalog.) If you were lucky enough to buy one then, you've likely made-out well on your investment as only 25-50 of them were made and they have become highly collectible! Most are located in Japan, today.

Have you ever heard of Gibson One of One series? I saw a store called Jrsirn selling them from 2017. It seems that these guitars are custom-made and have 'ONE OF ONE' on the truss rod cover. But I can't find any info about them on the internet. Do you have any ideas about these Gibsons?

Every time I see a triple pick up Les Paul Custom, I think of Peter Frampton. Davey Johnstone of Elton John's band is another famous player . Elton actually bought Davey his because he thought the triple gold humbuckers looked like gold bricks. After 50 plus years playing, building, and collecting electric guitars, Trogley schools me on another fact. The electric guitar never gets old.

@frankpike3684

Great video thank you. 3 humbucker Gibson's look awesome but for anyone looking into getting one I will say that you have to set up the middle pickup carefully as can interfere with your picking, depending on your style. Also I feel the variety of tones you can get are useful for recording but less so for live playing where I used the traditional neck, bridge, neck/bridge sounds 90% of the time. As this video demonstrates you wont get a Strat "inbetween" sound with humbuckers. Even if you coil split a Humbucker you will just get a thiner (but interesting) tone. For recording it is lots of fun to come up with a totally unique but subtle tone by juggling the levels, however I doubt most people would notice when listening. Mickey Baker played lots of guitars through his career but always sounded distinctive, so his sound was mainly his amp set up and way of picking. If he is playing a Jazzmaster or Les Paul it still sounds similar, at least to my ears. Having said that there were a few examples in this video of the pickup blends that did immediately scream "Mickey Baker", a slightly honky boxy sound:) I will say if someone wants a bit more beef to their sound but still have access to some twangy Strat tones then a Mini Humbucker is the way to go. I have a Firebird copy with three minis and 3 volume pots and I can dial in loads of much more immediately Strat or Tele like sounds on it. I should also say that due to their smaller size Minis do not interfere with your picking as much as a full HB in the middle position. I also recommend P90s which have a nice twang to them. Happy playing!

Wow,I really like the neck and middle sound!! I think if someone knew what they were doing they could put a switch in that would shut off each individual pickup so you could have the volumes set where you want them and just turn the pups you aren't needing for a particular song or part of a song to make it faster for like a live gig. Unfortunately the only way to do that would be to, gulp, drill a new hole. Well, I suppose you could use push pots for doing that? That's a beauty you got there Austin, the all mahogany top would indeed make it sound a bit warmer, the maple top gives the Les Paul a little more spank to it, which, hmmm goes to show that yes Virginia the wood species DOES effect the tone of an electric guitar lol.
@hkguitar1984
@hkguitar1984 4 жыл бұрын
Push/Pull switch pots on each volume control! Have a push/pull pot on the upper master tone for flipping the middle pickup out of phase. You would have a crazy amount of control and still be able to use it Live.
@alabamahebrew

@@hkguitar1984 - A person could spend days just playing with this thing and the tones one could get! You wouldn't really need another guitar, this one does it all lol. I think this gives me an idea to do this on a guitar someday. I just need to buy myself a $4,000 Les Paul custom and start rewiring it....NOT! Lol,this would be a great project to do on a cheap knock off or even an Epiphone. I refinished an Epiphone LP special, basically a les Paul junior with two pups. Had I not done such a great job with the finish and love the way it came out, almost looks like the new smokehouse finish on the Gibsons, I would do it to this guitar. Hmmmmmm...I do have that Bentley LP copy I also refinished but am not happy with it, I guess it might be a good candidate for some surgery and make a third pickup hole. Now just to get the push pull pots and the master volume pot and I am good to go, Lol. It will have to wait though, I still have about 4 guitars in the process of being customized that I want to get done before diving into another project. Hey, you are working with that company to build your custom LP, have them rout it out for a third one and you get going on this project, I will let you be the trial and error guy lol.

@@alabamahebrew Not sure you could get away with just using one guitar. There are some bends and riffs that really only sound convincing being played on the longer Fender scale length. A couple of Hendrix tunes come to mind where just the tone of the string as related to where it is played on the neck are really different sounding (24.75" scale length compared to the longer Fender scale length of 25.50"). While I really like triple pickup guitars for myself only a Stratocaster works well with my playing style. With the Stratocaster my pickups are lowered down to the pickgaurd for the best tone (IMO). So that puts the middle pickup out of the way when playing. When I had a triple pickup Les Paul style guitar the middle pickup always seemed to get in the way when I was playing. It was more aggravating than anything else. That said, I'd still like a P90 triple pickup Les Paul Custom Black Beauty. Not sure what it is about those Black Beauties but they are just about the sexiest guitars I've ever seen. Even with a Bigsby on them they look great. LOL, guitar projects, I currently have 5 guitars I'm trying to finish up. 1st stop for any custom wiring is always 920D. I've been able to describe what I want and they just magically make it happen. Most impressive is the Telecaster circuit they designed for me. Basically a Baja Tele control circuit with the S1 volume switch and the 4-position selector. What is different is they were able to use a stacked concentric tone pot so I can have individual tone capacitors and controls for each pickup while still retaining the classic 2 knob, 1 switch control plate layout. I personally feel being able to use different tone capacitor values for the bridge and neck pickups is the only way to go if possible.
@alabamahebrew
@alabamahebrew 4 жыл бұрын
@@hkguitar1984 - I agree, I don't know a whole lot about electrical circuitry but using the different value caps is a good way to best use the pups singly if you don't want to add more pots and just keep the instrument looking stock.
@hkguitar1984
@hkguitar1984 4 жыл бұрын
@@alabamahebrew Yeah, I've found that none of my Gibson style guitars use the same capacitor value for the neck or bridge pickup. Careful selection of the tone capacitor values makes a huge difference of not only how the tone control interacts with the volume pot and pickup, but how it actually sounds. It is a real PITA to take the time to try different value capacitors for each pickup but is totally worth the time & trouble to do so. I think my Les Paul Standard has a .047uF for the bridge pickup tone and a .022uF for the neck pickup. Also, buy utilizing the 50s style control circuit for LP Style guitars more of the Treble signal is retained when the volume is rolled down, again, it makes a really big difference in the guitar's overall performance.

Lol...I OWNED a Mickey LP original- in the Chicago area back in '77. I was told that they didn't make many, and mine was a '58 I believe. It had a three way. I sold it in '79- before there was a 'vintage market'. I could retire VERY comfortably now if I still had it Lol!

Would have been aesthetically pleasing to have a humbucker sized p-90 in the center, so they studs on the center pickup would be in the center and not moved toward the top

The photo of the original @ 1:36 shows the pole pieces orientation of the middle pickup is opposite to Trogly's example, maybe more Strat quack if it is reversed?

Wow, Good Eye Dail Opulskis! I'm not sure having the pickup flipped would change the tone too much, but it is significant you spotted the differences, maybe it happened on Trogly's guitar because the pickups have been out of it. Very possible Trogly's instrument has it wrong! Again, great eye Dail Opulskis!

I notice you can put two more pots in the cavity. Assuming it's in a condition where I wouldn't care about modding it, I'd put two killpots in. One to kill the middle hb and one to kill the neck and bridge hbs. Also a phase switch for one of the pickups would be cool.
@kawmic7
@kawmic7 4 жыл бұрын
3 phase switches, and It's even more versatile. I'm not a Gibson fanatic, but with those 3 switches added, i don't think you would need more than that guitar.

The problem with that wiring set up is that three volumes are a pain to change for tonality. There's a reason why the standard Strat set up has been the go-to way to wire a three pickup guitar. Having said that, that guitar screams "Too Cool For Colored TV!" She's a beauty!
@marcogiampa283
@marcogiampa283 4 жыл бұрын
Ok I had an idea, someone tell me if this is possible. So you wire your 3 pickup LP normally. But the bridge tone is Master tone, and the neck tone is a master for the middle pickup, but no matter what toggle position you are on, you can blend in the middle
@hkguitar1984
@hkguitar1984 4 жыл бұрын
Yup, most certainly can be done. I had a triple pickup guitar wired much as you describe. I had the middle pickup wired out of phase all the time. 3-Way toggle switch worked just like on a normal Les Paul. The control knobs were in the conventional 4-knob Les Paul configuration. I had 3 Individual Volume knobs and a Master Tone. The volume knob for the center out-of-phase pickup could be blended in with the 3-Way toggle switch in every/any position. It was a very useful and musical control layout as I could blend in the out-of-phase sound in every position and could dial in a little quack or a lot! It was great, I miss that guitar.

Great video of a very rare and interesting guitar. I did not know there was a reissue. I have owned an original.50's LP.3 hum custom and a white 3 hum early 60's SG custom. The middle pickup on these guitars was out of phase. Really reversed on purpose by flipping the magnet over ( this info from Gibson production manager at that time ) That Mickey Baker has them in.phase. ( by the way, contrary to the word's common knowledge, strocasters are not, and never have been out of phase.¹ To check this reverse the wires on the middle pickup to put it really out of phase, then give it a listen ) You pointed out on the tone control there is a capacitor and said there never is one there, indicating this was a mod. Did you misspeak? Tone controls ARE CAPACITORS. They leak part of the highs to ground depending on.the value of the cap (teactance) .047, .022 etc. more highs removed with higher values There HAS to be a capacitor. Granted, that cap was changed with the same sloppy soldering. A standard modern Gibson or Epi can be changed to that wiring fairly easy. Look at the Mickey Baker It has 4 knobs, your modern Gibson and epi les paul or SG has 4 inobs. Take it to a knowledgeable tech and have him convert. It to 3 blender pots and one master tone., Not hard to do,² I change the selector to a master coil tap. Or a mid pickup phase switch (for those THINKING this will get a strat tone, usually changed back to my option in which you DO GET a start tone.³) Just an interesting bit of. Unknown info on the all mahogany body. Craig Chacicio (sp) needed a real '56 gold top Les Paul so he came to me to find one. His was burned up at Montereax. I got him the real thing 2 hum gold top, and in.taking the pickups.out.to authenticate I noticed something strange. It had no.maple top! It was an all mahagony.body made as an LP standard. Obviously a custom body painted gold, who would notice? Since P90 standards had maple tops, this is real odd. Anybody else with a 50's gold top ever notice? Are they all like this? The guitar sounded noticeably different, not attributed to the pickups (my experience playing a dozen or more of these PAF guitars and getting my '59 burst out). It had a warmer sound. Sweeter highs, but slightly more distortion in the bass really noticeable through the Mesa mark I. is this why Duane Allman preferred goldtops with 2 hums? ( of course, anyone with that much attention.to the nuances of tone would have heard the difference compared to a sunburst. Anyway, thanks for reading this endless comment and: Rock on, Dan Torres Footnotes. ¹ one of the real famous guitar players, not knowing what out of phase sounded like, said that sweer sound was out of phase. Wrong! Out of phase is not sweet it is overly bright, harsh and lacks. Volume and bass Like I said, reverse the wires on your mid pickup, put it out of phase, and you will hear real out of phase. So rwrp huh? Dan's nuts. Look at it rw means reverse wind, same as reversing the wires. It puts the pickup out of phase. BUT, to means reverse polarity This puts the pickup out of phase. So overall, it is back in phase. Why, it is the humbucking principle. (Google it). Gets rid of the noise. One of the coils of a HUMBUCKING pickup is rwrp. ² to make a standard vintage wired pot into a blender pot, just reverse the 2 wires on the pot. To make a master tone just move the wire coming into the tone pot to the hot tab on your jack. ³ to make a coil tap switch that sounds like a strat (even with 1 pickup) run your coil tap wire in series thru a .02 capacitor. This also makes a noiseless coil tap) My web site is down right now, (early Jan. .2020). When I get it repaired it already has a bunch.of.this stuff on it and I will put tons more new guitar and amp tech on.it. Please excuse any typos. I do not like to type on the pbone

The lack of "stratiness" means the middle pickup is in phase. For the quacky sound the electric or magnetic polarity should be reversed. Maybe that's a modification someone did on the guitar (really easy to do), or maybe it came stock like that. Frankly, I prefer the quacky blends over the straight blends.

I like the Mickey Baker setup. A missing 90's tailpiece, I don't see how that would be worth going to any trouble to find an original. They're just cast zinc, anyway. I'd probably replace it with a lightweight Gotoh, anyway. But the Schaller is at least as good as what Gibson would have put on it.
