I am an eye surgeon by profession and we use tablet Diamox a lot in eye surgery . To prevent the tingling sensation after taking this drug we need to take fruits rich in Pottasium , like banana and oranges .Diamox reduces Pottasium levels in the body .

Yes, mostly seen it used by Ophthalmologists outside of travel use. They do say to take - Bananas, Coconut water and in some cases 'Potklor' (potassium syrup). In my experience, diet may not provide enough K+ for everyone.

She used the term blood thinner for the action of acetazolamide. That's y a non medical personnel should never be talking about medicine. Diamox is a diuretic(increases urine output n makes ur blood thicker comparatively if u are not hydrating adequately after taking it and also makes ur blood acidic leading to hyperventilation I.e. indirectly forcing u to breathe more n faster.

Is the beneficial effect of nifedipine in HAS/ HAPE specific to this particular dihydropyridine? I take amlodipine (another dihydropyridine) for blood pressure control. Thanks, in advance. I’m a pharmacologist by training, btw.
@Indiahikes
@Indiahikes 5 ай бұрын
Though both, Nifedipine and Amlodipine, are vasodilators, there is very limited data available to prove the effect of Amlodipine in treating HAPE and HACE. The use of Nifedipine is usually advised in such cases. In your case, you can continue taking the recommended dose of Amlodipine (as per your doctor) on the trek and let your trek leader know about your condition.

1. Does a person get AMS while driving up to higher altitudes or it hits you only while trekking activity? 2. Is there a chance of catching AMS while at Gulmarg /Sonmarg? Both are at an altidude of 9000 ft. approximately.
@Indiahikes
@Indiahikes 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ajay, it's very common to get AMS while simply going to high altitude. You could be driving, skiing, flying, trekking -- you can get AMS. It has nothing to do with the activity, it has everything to do with the altitude itself. In Sonamarg / Gulmarg, you're not too likely to get AMS, because they're still just at the brink of high altitude (according to altitude classification, "high altitude" starts at 9,000 ft). But if you fly to Leh (11,480 ft), for example, you're very likely to get AMS because you're flying directly to a very high altitude. Similarly, if you drive to Rohtang Pass (~13,000 ft), you're again likely to get AMS. Hope this explains the possibilities of AMS to you.

High alt is caused by gaining alt fast than by acclimatising slowly .so mode of gaining ht is immaterial,u get it more if u travel by air,say Del to Leh. Best is to go slowly in reachg hts.Best way to avoid is to go up and down regularly and for that matter climbers do load ferries for expdns from lower camps/BC to hrcamps and follow principle work at ht but sleep low. Troops going to Siachen,gain 3 k ht everyday to acclimatise body to thinner air.

hi Swathi ,this May I had been to chopta tungnath trek so on the stay near Chopta village at night for 2days I wolk up at night around 12am both nights and when I gotup from the bed for loo I was shivering till I went back to bed and after lying down I felt little of suffocating and my breathing was not normal and it took 2 to 3 minutes to become my breathing normal my rugs were verymuch heavy. so why did this happened to me, is it because of the heavy rugs or else? and I'm 48 yrs, so in such case can I do high altitude winter treks in future?
@Indiahikes
@Indiahikes 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Yogita, this could be because you were feeling very cold. I notice that this happens if I don't pee before sleeping. I would say make sure you pee every night before sleeping, even if you don't feel like it. It really helps. Another reason is that you might not have eaten enough dinner. Eating well makes sure your body is occupied in digesting food, which generates a lot of body heat, which in turn keeps you warm. So do these two things. You could follow these steps to make sure you get a good night's sleep on your next trek - indiahikes.com/winter-camping-trekking-tips/

Hi Barsha, The Hampta pass trek starts rather high at 9,000 ft and climbs taking you to 14,000 ft by the third day itself. This high start makes you susceptible to altitude sickness in the first couple of days. So yes, we would recommend you get on a preventive course of Diamox before you begin the trek.

Yeah acetazolamide is a drug for AMS but not a blood thinner. And better consult a doctor for dose.

You are not a doctor and with your flimsy knowledge how can you recommend drugs like this. Perhaps the lndian Medical association and Drug Authorities should look in to this.
