Today we're showing you guys 3 helpful tips and tricks to perfectly sharpen. lawn mower blade! These 3 techniques are what I've used for years with our RBG 712 sharpener to get a perfect edge every time.
The three simple techniques are this: #1, grind the edge of the blade into the grinding wheel to get a perfect sharpen on the tip. #2, clean up any knicks or divots on the blade. #3, Lastly, clean up the back side of the blade of any burrs or sharp edges with a few extra passes. That's it!
With these 3 tips you can take even the roughest of lawn mower blades and perfectly sharpen them back to their original condition. Do you guys sharpen your lawn mower blades with any of these tips or techniques? Let us know down in the comments down below!

Finally, after all these years, somebody actually told the truth about the rbg 712. Every video I've ever watched, people have passed the blade three times and acted like they were done and it was magic. Brian, thank you so much. Best video you've ever done. You haven't lost your touch after all these years. Great content. Now I will go against the grain. I'm sticking with my $20 angle grinder from Harbor Freight. About every 8 years they die and I spend another $20. On my third one in 21 years.

You produce great content thanks, however, instead of dropping the blade straight in the "V "...try using the blade support...you can guide the blade along that, as like a back support...u will get a better finished product and won't need to do any of the flicking
@BriansLawnMaintenance
@BriansLawnMaintenance 2 жыл бұрын
We do use the cradle, but with almost every blade yes we still need to flick it in just a hair. Until at least the blade is at the 30 degree angle the cradle/guide is set for. Most blades come with a 32-45 degree angle, so it takes a few sharpenings to get that cradle to do it’s magic.

Agree.... once they are running. I have a EU3000i Handy and EU6500i that's used as a whole house generator. Neither one of them likes to start when the temperature is below 45 degrees F. It's very discouraging. In cold weather I have to use starting fluid on both of them. I've used nothing but non-Ethanol fuel in both since they were new.
@williamhorn8701
@williamhorn8701 Жыл бұрын
I guess that's a great plan if you like buying lots of new lawn mower blades. I've been mowing grass and sharpening blades for over 50 years. There is a reason new blades come with that long thin flat edge. You end up buying new blades sooner. The first thing I do when a new blade dulls, which isn't very long, sharpened like that, is I sharpen them to a chisel point or edge. Then the blades aren't damaged as much by the inevitable stone hits that happen over time. My blades last much longer with this method. But by all means, carry on if you like buying new ones and making the blade manufacturers rich. I prefer to use a one-inch belt sander with a medium grit belt. I can see and control the grinding much better. Most important, is only to take off as much metal as is necessary to get a sharp blade. And the biggest benefit is you don't have to sharpen them as often. They produce just as nice a cut, since they are still sharp, and they stay that way longer. Oh, yea save your money on crazy blade balancers. I round shaft screwdriver does the same thing for free. I've been balancing them like that since day one. never had an issue with them being balanced.

I struggle with how to sharpen my blades the first time they run through the RGB 712. We are currently using Exmark oem blades and the angle on them is different than the RGB angle. So the first time you run a blade through there you have to do a million passes before the wheel even gets to the edge of the blade. Once they’ve been through it’s easier but that first time is a huge pain in the ass.
@BriansLawnMaintenance
@BriansLawnMaintenance Жыл бұрын
Takes a few passes to get the angle perfect. I just did an updated blade grinding technique video though to help with this.

Can I ask you why you only sharpen 50% of the cutting edge...I sharpen up to 20 sets of blades at a time and I always sharpen 100% of the edge...
@BriansLawnMaintenance
@BriansLawnMaintenance 2 жыл бұрын
You only use the last 2” of an edge to cut with anyways. One or two manufacturers best I understand it started making blades with an edge the whole way down. Before then, mower blades only had an edge for the last 2”. I’ve never seen the inner half of my blades ever really dull. So the theory holds true in my experience. Just that last 2-3” is all that is really cutting and dulling.

First off..I enjoy watching your videos. Love your mowing content...and reviews on equipment...I agree with u 100% I own my own lawnmower repair shop...and I sharpen blades for guys like you..the last 2 inches or so is all that cuts...some of the blades have 8 to 10 inches of cutting edge with is dumb in my opinion...what's you opinion on the blades that have tungsten carbide on them...like bad boy blades? The coating makes do difference in strength to cutting edge....in my opinion it rounds the edge twice a bad as one without coating...thank you and would love to hear back

The "rounded tip" technique is based off a wing tip. Low and high pressure. But the thing is, you want it to cut grass, not take off. SMH. Obviously some lack common sense and others swear by it. Not me. My blades gotta pass the paper test every time. Call me ocd or whatever but that's me.

Every time I have purchased a new set of Deere blades they are razor sharp right out of the box. So that is how I re-sharpen them. Also, if you look carefully at most mower manuals they show a little graphic with a 1/64 measurement on the blade edge. But if you read the instructions it says a sharp edge MAXIMUM thickness of 1/64. That means that is the dullest you ever want it to get.
