3 Main Causes of Yellow/Chlorotic Leaves on ROSES (Unexpected guests)!

Our beloved roses can get yellow leaves. I am focusing on 3 main reasons why roses get yellow/chlorotic foliage. This video gets unexpected development, when during filming I spot a pesky invader on the leaves of my Lady of Shalott rose! Happy gardening!

I noticed that some of these stems with the yellow leaves seem to be showing borer damage on my roses. If you're going to cut them, it is probably a good idea to use a pruning sealer so the borer doesn't move in further down the stem where the fresh cut is.

Thank you for such interesting information particularly with regard to nitrogen and iron deficiency and how roses use these elements. It is never too late to learn something new! Our roses give us so much beauty so we owe it to them to attend to their needs. Your Master Gardener knowledge is clearly a benefit to us. Has doing the Master Gardener training changed the way you garden much? You and your roses look lovely 😊

I have a hard time pruning the old canes out of my climbing roses too. I should be more ruthless with cutting back. All your roses look healthy to me! You are good at catching an issue quickly!

Thank you Cami, your rose is getting sick though. I need to use something heavier than natural products on her, to help her get bigger and reach the sun.

@@OlgaCarmody Well dear Olga, keep in mind that it was an experiment on my part. I wasn't sure I could even start a cutting and have it survive. I'm sorry if she fails, but if she does, we gave it a good try! Didn't we?

@@camirichardson7485 Cami, don't even think that you did something wrong with propagating that rose. Katrina was thriving in full sun, but there, where she is planted, shade is at the base. I have hard time encouraging her to grow to a stronger sunnier spot (which is a bit higher). Happy gardening!

Hm, my roses, because of the cold climate, are planted deep. So graft union is way under the soil level. Maybe because of that, I never have suckers from my grafted roses.

Where can I ask advice? I have a lot of yellow spotted roses leaves. I am treating with soapy water spray under leaves. I'm wondering if it is another deficiency I should be treating.

Well, your first step would be to figure out what causes the yellowing of leaves: bugs, diseases or deficiencies... You can find the local rosarian club and bring a sample or ask someone to come and see your roses. Each state has a rose society, they are happy to help usually. Good luck!

I have yellow leaves on the bottom of my newly planted At Last rose. I thought it was just transplant shock. I haven't fertilized it yet. Bonny

It can be a shock from being transplanted, or lack of water... since your rose roots don't have the whole scoop on the soil.

What is the best way to protect potted Roses in cold winters ?

If I grow roses in containers, which I don't, I would use my garage to store all the pots. It is adjacent to the house and the temp there doesn't fall below freezing. I would elevate all the pots and keep them away from the cement floor. Something like wooden planks base.

This is the second year for my lady of shallot and it’s putting on some roses but the deer ate the buds on the other lady of Shalott so I sprayed it with kaolin clay to see if it deters the deer

Well, it's deer or chipmunks. In my case - rabbits, just took the buds off my Boscobel rose!! Keep us updated on the results, I am curious!

Escribo desde Madrid (España) y quedo aterrada cuando veo que comentáis los destrozos que producen ciervos y conejos en vuestros jardines. Os puedo comentar que quizás aquí en España hay algo que hace más difícil tener esos problemas, al menos con algunos de los animales como ciervos. Aquí en España los jardines son distintos en el sentido de que no tenemos jardines delanteros. Todo el terreno que es nuestra propiedad normalmente la gente lo valla completo de manera que sería imposible que entraran ciervos y dificulta mucho que entren conejos. Es decir la casa está en el interior del jardín y todo el perímetro de este jardín tiene muros o vallas metálicas (con o sin setos de plantas). Ardillas sí pueden entrar pero como digo, ciervos y conejos lo tienen muy difícil. Debe ser terrible salir al jardín y comprobar que se han comido los capullos de vuestras rosas...qué lástima!

My beautiful Iceberg Rose is dying and I discovered too late that the rhino beetle grubs were after the roots of my perfectly healthy rose. The same things were happening, a bit of yellowish of the leaves and now the whole plant has dry leaves and I don’t think that it will recuperate from the trauma 😢.

Take a cutting and stick it into the potting medium. If you have growing hormone, put that onto the stem...Maybe your rose will have a new beginning...

How do you feed your roses with nitrogen and iron....liquid feed or pellets?
