Completed the adjustable piston install, everything went great. I did things just like you did them and it worked like a charm. Thanks for your time researching this problem, the video and for the great piston kit.

Hello Jim. I just want to thank you for all the help you gave me over the phone. Before I saw your videos I thought I would never be able to fix the rattle in my 93 nissan pickup. I paid over 2000 dollars to have my timing chain replaced twice by two different mechanic shops in one year trying to figure out the problem. When I seen your videos I thought this is the answer to my rattle problem. Your videos and the spacer kit made the job so easy. Thank you so much Jim and i will spread word of this amazing fix you invented!

I had a problem with my 1996 Frontier, 2.4L engine, but it was more due to the "check engine" light. Then I saw Jim's brilliant You Tube video about the 'startup noise', which was next on my list to investigate. My 2.4L had about 85K miles, but was noisy on startup. I watched Jim's video, then took off the valve cover, and found that the plastic part of fixed chain guide had broken!! That had to be fixed, so I ordered the basic kind (Beck/Armley 024-1179) and was able to put it in-not easy, and required taking off the oil pan. Best answer would have been to do just the plastic insert, but did not find one. Then I ordered the $25 tensioner piston cap from Jim. I measured and found that my gap about 9MM (maybe 0.35"). I cut with hacksaw and carefully installed it. Engine now sounds MUCH better. Thanks Jim!!

Today i installed the adjustable spacer in my 97 Nissan KA24E , followed the instructions and it took ~ 2 hours, worked great. The video does not give justice to getting the spacer out and back in with the spring but a little work with long nose pliers worked . You need to watch the video a few times to cut down on installation time .Thank You again Jim for helping to keep these great little pickups on the road without spending a bundle my truck is 22 years old and now still going.

I am glad to welcome you! Very good content! I have owned a Nissan Terrano 2 with a KA24E engine for more than 10 years. The mileage of the engine is 225 thousand kilometers (about 140 thousand miles), I have not yet changed anything in the engine, except for the spark plugs. Sometimes, during a cold start, there is a ringing of the timing chain. Your videos are very informative and give you a complete understanding of how to replace or repair! Thank you very much for your work and your time! Best regards, Alexey from Russia!

Thanks Alexey, Let me know if you need any help. I have about 20 of videos on this excess chain subject. Best item so far has been the self adjusting ratchet tensioner. These are good high mileage engines, outside of the timing chain issue.

I just installed this spacer and it really is a godsend!!! Jim provides detailed instructions and the wood needed to complete the improvement and the improvements were instant and my truck has regained the power I knew it should have! If your hardbody is sluggish or you suspect a loose timing chain do not hesitate to pick up a lot from Jim and in a couple hours a lot of the mysterious power problems will be corrected! My name is George Dell and this procedure was the absolute best fix I have done to date!! Thank you Jim!!!

Thank you Jim for these videos. I ordered the adjustable piston from Jim and was able to solve the timing chain rattle. This is not a difficult job but planning and having the right tools is a must. Once inside the procedure is tedious and takes some finesse but if done correctly should fix the issue. Also if this is your daily driver it wouldn’t be a bad idea to go ahead and purchase the exhaust side plastic guide if your engine has the “snap-on” replaceable guide. Once you are inside if the guide is damaged or missing most part stores do not stock this piece unless you live near a large warehouse and it will take a couple days to arrive. This job can be done in a few hours if everything goes smoothly however, realistically if you run into problems or need parts it will take longer.

Jim sold me an adjustable piston for my 93 nissan d21 with 156000 miles. I watched the videos on how to install them and it took me about 2 hours, I was taking my time watching and installing in steps. The videos were great and Jim was very helpful with a couple questions I had. I installed the piston on July 2nd and its working great. Nissan's KA24E is a tough engine , I think mine will keep running great for many more miles to come. Thanks to Jim and his great invention, the engine is still easy to work on. Jim had the part mailed to me within a couple days. He also included installation instuctions and the two wooden wedges. Thanks Jim

Today I was able to install a spacer that I had ordered from Jim for my 1997 Nissan pick up truck it had developed a chain rattle when you first start up the truck in the morning I installed it myself with his kit that I ordered from him I also followed the steps on KZfaq from his video.... Jim have planed everything perfectly for you to be able to make your installation on your vehicle.... if your pick up truck has developed a chain rattle please take a look at this video and learn from it and getting in touch with Jim he will sell you the spacer in the blocks to make your installation. I am very please with the results no more chain rattle when you first start the truck up thank you Jim

truck 1993 D21 4x4 165k newer timing chain ..Just purchased this adjustable spacer version that Jim sells. Chain was very loose may have even jumped a tooth. My motor also had a bad head gasket. So pulled the head had it surfaced new guides installed and vacuum tested etc. I also pulled the timing cover and looked at replacing the chain and tensioner. However I read on a Nissan site of a person that did that and within 10K miles had same issue again. I saw Jim's video on testing chain stretch, My truck has 165K but has had the chain replaced as well as the newer 1996 and up guides installed. Which I determined from Jim's great videos. So not sure how many miles on my chain but it tested good. So I reassembled the engine and just added Jim's spacer. I left out just one small shim out of the kit so it is almost at full space capability. My chain is tight and is always tight as the motor revolves. NICE! I of course had the oil pump out and distributor but reinstalled those as the manual shows and the engine fired right up on first try. No chain slap at all... engine is smooth. Best $48 bucks spent on the truck ever! Highly recommend this product!

This man is obviously a brilliant and conscientious man. I followed his directions to the letter (but actually screwed something up on my own with new spark plugs), and my Nissan truck is now purring like a kitten. Note to self - NEVER use too much (if any) anti-seize on your spark plugs. I tried it for the first time on a suggestion from the auto parts guy. The fouling of the plugs will make you think you did something wrong with the tensioner piston install. Mr. Martin was very quick to help me find the issue. Great man, this one. Much (if not equal) credit also to my father. It's always amazing how much knowledge that old school Air Force mechanic has. Between the two of them, I got put straight.

I installed mine today for my 93 nissan hardbody 4cylinder automatic 2wd. Took me a little longer than most because I had to drop my pan too. My timing chain guide had disintegrated and dropped in the pan because of the chain rattle. Check out my videos to see if anything I went through will help. I'm inexperienced on working on cars , so if my lingo is off that's why. But Jim's kit makes it easy especially for a rookie like me. Thanks Jim! She's running great now!

I fixed my 1996 Hardbody Truck start up rattle!! Before I start my story I would like to add the disclaimer that I am only slightly mechanically oriented. I ordered the adjustable piston from Jim. I recieved the part very quickly and he even attached the factory Nissan engine manual for torque specs. The fixed chain guide was missing but was found inside the oil pan in tiny little chewed up pieces. I ordered the fixed guide from Nissan ($20). The new guide snapped right into place. I spoke with Jim and he told me that I should install the fixed chain guide first before installing the adjustable piston. The reason for this is because after you install the guide it could possibly change how much the old piston sticks out and could throw off the measurement. So I installed the guide and retook my measurement of the piston travel. It did change from the time I first measured without the new guide installed. I added shims to the new piston to equal my measurement. I then used a stiff piece of copper wire with a hook on the end of it. I slightly squeezed the wire around the piston at the end where the shims are. I lowered it into place and used a screw driver to slightly angle the tensioner spring (It will be sticking out of the tensioner) so I could slide the piston over it. While holding the piston in place with the wire, I nudged the piston forward with a screw driver and it slid into the tensioner. I placed the small wedge in-between the timing chain and pushed it down to hold the piston in place. This is important because mine popped out because I didn't use the wedge the first time. I cleaned out my oil pan and replaced it with a new gasket. I replaced the valve cover with a new gasket as well. It is very important to not over tighten the valve cover screws. When it starts to feel tight then stop. Wonder how I know this? LoL I put everything back together and fired it up. It made the most God awful noise when I started it up. There was no oil circulating yet but I thought I had screwed something up! The noise died down after about 5 minutes as oil circulated through the engine much to my relief. I let the truck sit for a couple of hours and restarted it. It purrs like a kitten. I would like to thank Jim for his assistance and for his video because I had been listening to that embarrassing rattling start-up for years. It's now fixed thanks to Jim and his efforts. The whole project cost me less than $100! Thanks Again Jim. Your The Man!!

I purchased the adjustable piston kit from Jim for my 1995 Nissan pickup with 148,000 miles. The rattle noise was pretty substantial as well as the driver's side timing chain guide was completely missing. His videos cover every detail of the process and Jim was even able to answer some questions I had over the phone. I was able to install a new chain guide through the top without removing the front cover. I also dropped the oil pan and removed all the bits of the old chain guide which were sitting at the bottom. It's been over a month now and I've been driving the truck to work and back daily, the rattle is completely gone and the KA24E runs smooth as ever. This kit is the real deal, great product, great videos, and great support from Jim! Thanks!

After being irritated for two months from the rattle every time I started up my 97 Nissan pickup I found this video. Needless to say I was ready to get this spacer an install it. I would consider myself to be mechanically inclined and wasn’t worried about doing the job. However I wanted to get the part quickly and your not going to find this and any auto parts store. So sending a check was not gonna do it. So I looked up this whole PayPal thing and downloaded to my phone. After that I follow the step-by-step instructions through PayPal. Just to let you know for the ones out there thinking that this could be difficult, it’s not. Sent Jim the money for the spacer in a matter of seconds and Jim sent me the spacer, both wedges and step-by-step instructions which I received two days later after ordering. Jim and I exchanged a couple of emails during the whole process pertaining to my questions. Jim was very helpful and has a customer for life. Jim’s videos will answer all your questions throughout the repair. Thanks Jim, KW

@Mr1jim
@Mr1jim 6 жыл бұрын
Yes when the key way was at 12:00, all valves to number one piston were all closed. This puts piston number one at TDC Compression stroke. If you are going to remove the cam sprocket its best to have the key way at about 12:30 or 1:00, this will make sure all back pressure is off cam shaft and make things smoother.

@@travishansen6080 Thank You, That part can be found at www.martin-industries.net/ Feel free to contact me anytime with questions. I have three items that can be used to adjust excess chain slack out of these engines. Difference between the Options in my opinion is: Best: Option# 3, Self Adjusting RAtchet Tensioner, automatic adjustment, self adjusts to keep excess chain slack to minimum at all times, no need to make manual adjustments. Better: Option# 2, Adjustable Piston, manual adjustment of excess chain slack using adjustable piston & shims, adjust by using shims, if rattle returns, easy to add another shim if needed. Good: Option# 1, Tensioner Spacer, manual adjustment of excess chain slack using a spacer, adjust by cutting spacer to needed length, if rattle returns a longer spacer will need to be installed. Main thing is to adjust the excess chain slack before any damage is done to the exhaust side guide and front timing cover. Best Regards, Jim

I installed the piston spacer kit. It fixed the chain rattle but i am still having worse performance issues after the install including, sputtering/hesitating at low rpm especially 2nd gear, I thought it could be the timing but i checked and it is timed properly. Can't imagine what it could be. when i was putting the cam sprocket back on i had to slightly turn the crank so it would go back on but only the tiniest bit, i hope this didn't cause any issues. I am thinking it make still be an electrical issue but i am out of ideas. any advice would be greatly appreciated.
@jamesmartin5370
@jamesmartin5370 3 жыл бұрын
You mention the performance issue was there before the install, Turning the crank slightly to line up cam sprocket would not affect the performance unless you skipped a tooth. Did you remember to disconnect the TPS before you checked the timing? If you time these engines with out dis-connecting the TPS the timing will be incorrect. The TPS works in conjunction with two other sensors. The electrical signals of the three sensors together are sent to the computer. The computer then takes the average of the three sensors to adjust fuel amount delivered to the engine and at the same time the computer adjusts the distributor timing. This could be a sensor issue, one of the electrical clips also may have a bad connection.

@@jamesmartin5370 Seems like i may have skipped a tooth, unless one of the spark plug cables some how went bad. Seems like engine is misfiring and is sputtering with very low power although not stalling out. timing is still correct although im not sure if this would be any indication of the tooth skipping. Im unsure what to do at this point

If rattle in your engine is always there and doesn't go away it may be from another source. To eliminate possibility of an exterior source disconnect all fan belts, start engine and see if rattle is still there. If its not, source is not the chain and troubleshoot the bearings connected to fan belts until you find the defective one. If noise is still there, the adjustable piston will adjust the excess chain slack out of chain and noise will be gone until chain and sprockets wear to a point where there is slack again. Adjustable piston is a manual adjustment so in time another adjustment may be needed. This is why the self adjusting ratchet tensioner is best, it self adjusts to as the chain and sprocket wear to always keep chain snug. If its making the noise always, the check valve in your tensioner may not be working correctly or oil journal leading to tensioner may have a blockage in it and tensioner may not be getting full amount of oil pressure to it. There are several items to check concerning chain noise, main thing is to correct it before chain damages front timing chain cover.

Nissan Factory Engine Manuals can be seen at below link: www.nicoclub.com/nissan-service-manuals To get the timing right... Before you install the head: Rotate crank shaft until No#1 piston is at top of cylinder. Then before you install the head rotate camshaft so that cam sprocket punch mark is at 3:00. This will get you at static timing and will be set up to install the chain in correct position. Read the Nissan engine manual closely about how to install the oil pump and counter shaft or your distributor timing could be off.

I been trying to research the bolts that I need to remove but no luck. I have removed all the front of the truck and removed some bolts for the timing cover but I am afraid I might be missing some and that's the reason it won't come off. Need help

@Mr1jim 5 жыл бұрын
Late response since for some reason the message went into my junk mail. There is one or two hard to see fasteners down by the oil pump. A lot of guys miss these, one is a small one and if not removed could cause damage to the cover. Normally the oil pan is dropped because Nissan recommends using liquid gasket to seal things up, and so, attempting to slide timing cover off with the liquid gasket that is stuck to the oil pan will be tough, maybe if you can get in there and cut it loose with a utility knife it might be possible. If you drop it an inch it would be easier. These tensioner spacers and adjustable pistons are a manual adjustment and work best on an old chain that is rattling or on a new chain that is broke in.

Mr1jim it's not necessary to install a new timing belt in this case?
@Mr1jim
@Mr1jim 5 жыл бұрын
Required to install new timing chain if chain shows 1.5% elongation. I measured chain in this engine and it showed .17% elongation so I decided to leave it in service. Some people are getting start up rattle immediately after installing a new chain kit?? So it seems start up rattle isn't always from a worn out chain. The hydraulic tensioners used in these engines don't seem to be able to perform well if oil has had time to bleed out of them, such as if engine is shut down and sits over night.

Would the Slack cause the engine to lock down like it's out of time when it's cold but fire right up when warm. Uncle changed my timing chain and it's been like that ever since. Thought he might have put it back together a tooth off but I'm wondering if the Slack might be doing it bc it does rattle pretty good at first start
@jamesmartin5370
@jamesmartin5370 3 жыл бұрын
A slack chain will allow camshaft to jump forward at low rpms up to 9 degrees or so. Depends on how much slack is in chain, I have never heard of it causing condition you describe. I would start with possibility of the spark set too far advanced. If you have a timing light, retard timing a couple of degrees and see if that corrects condition.

@@skrapenpennies9947 Could be several items. Tough for me to say not having rig where I can observe it. Need to start someplace and eliminate possibilities one at a time. I have seen this condition when timing is adjusted to far advanced. If advanced too far, at cranking speed, gas mixture in combustion chamber fires too soon before TDC. It takes time for gas mixture to completely burn and produce full pressure on piston. These KA24E engines used in the hardbodys are designed to have timing set at 10 degrees BTDC . This will give gas mixture time to start its burn 10 degrees BTDC and just as piston is passing past 0 degrees TDC complete full burn is starting to take place to push piston down on its power stroke. If timing of spark is off, in the advanced position, engine will stall and even stop dead while attempting to start with starter. Timing being too far advanced could cause gas mixture to burn completely before piston reaches 0 degrees TDC and will cause piston to have too much pressure on it while starter is attempting to push it up against the gas burn. Once engine starts it may run ok since the computer may kick in and attempt to adjust timing but you may hear some pinging. Another item to check is make sure engine is grounded, check ground and all connections on starter. If the starter has lost its solid ground, has poor connections it will have full 12 volts to it and it will operate, but a poor connection will reduce amperage to starter, under load it will not be able to operate to its full capacity possibility causing what you discribe. I have seen this condition caused by the back plate on a starter being loose. There are two fasteners on the back of the starter that hold the back plate in place. Might be a good idea to do a quick check of the back plate to make sure they are not loose. If I were trouble shooting I would check these easy items first and move forward from there.

Well, I would start from square one. Watch the rotor on the distributor and when it points to number one spark plug terminal, observe the position of the cam shaft. It should be approaching TDC Compression Stroke, and all valves should be closed or just at a position of closing. When cam shaft keyway is pointing to about 12:00 all the valves should be closed because this will be the compression stroke. Send me an email at jamesmart55@hotmail.com and I will be happy to discuss this further, I will can also send you a factory Nissan engine manual you can take a look at, it has several diagrams of different timing positions that will help.

no need to spin 17 times, the dots and colored chain links only matter when you're putting on the chain in the first place. Just be 100% sure you're at TDC on the compression stroke. It doesn't matter where the colored links are when you pull off the old chain, just align the new colored chain links with the dots while you're at TDC on the compression stroke.

Common issue with hydraulic lifters. Sometimes when oil system is opened on these engines air gets in and is trapped in the hydraulic lifters. Probably happened when you removed the hydraulic piston. KA24E Nissan Factory Engine Manual covers this since it is common when serviced at times. The engine manual says to let it run at low rpms for about 30 minutes until air bleeds out of lifters. If the tapping doesn't go away, shut it down, let completely cool, usually air will get pushed out during cool down and noisy lifter will run quiet after this.

Major roller chain manufactures claim a #35 roller chain that is at 1.5% elongation should be replaced. Only way I know how to determine when a roller chain needs to be replaced is to measured for wear. These are a basic #35 roller chain, industry standards for wear on #35 roller chains used for power transmission with these sized sprockets allow up to 1.5% elongation. They need to be measured with the chain tight, about 15 lbs of pull on the area being measured. My video #8 shows how to measure these chains: at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mtCZhsV40N3FfGg.html There are other videos out there on the subject, also chain wear gauges that can be used to determine wear.

How do you know which 2 chain links to mark?
@jamesmartin5370
@jamesmartin5370 3 жыл бұрын
When installing a new chain, most chains have two marks on them. One lower mark on chain that matches up to the crank shaft sprocket punch mark. The other upper mark matches up to the cam shaft sprocket punch mark. Any time the cam shaft sprocket punch mark is at about 3:00, the chain link next to this punch mark can be marked, (this is the fastest way) Or you can rotate the engine until the original upper mark on chain lines up with the punch mark on cam sprocket, doesn't make any difference. Only need to be concerned with one mark on chain, the one that lines up with punch mark on cam sprocket. Just make sure before you remove cam sprocket that punch mark is at about 3:00 and that the chain link next to the punch mark is marked so it can be put back in the same place.

Thanks, We have now come out with a self adjusting tensioner that has been working good for keeping the chain slack free.

Not necessarily, some guys have installed a new chain and two weeks later the rattle is back. The chains last longer than the sprockets in these, its usually sprocket teeth wear that causes the chain slack. Best item we have is the self adjusting ratchet tensioner. Best to inspect for damage to the inside of timing chain cover on drivers side of engine, its not a good thing when the chain cuts a hole and mixes coolant in oil.
