Good observation that people get conditioned to fear being themselves. I think it was C.S. Lewis book Screwtape Letters where the character said "I spent my life doing neither what I wanted nor what I ought." One of the hurdles for most folks living in small town America with no relatives around is there's nowhere to meet people, ever.
