His 6 5' frame gave him his stride advantage. A shorter guy generating 5x bodyweight of force equals Yohan Blake. Anyone else under 6 foot will have to generate 6 or seven x bodyweight to emulate Bolt. Bolt was gifted
@actual_random
@actual_random Жыл бұрын
It's much easier for shorter guys to produce higher relative forces and you will see that they actual do produce higher forces. Bolt has a F0 of 10.0kg while Jacobs , Kerley, Su will all have F0 of 11.5-11.9 kg. So they are capable of producing more force relative to their body weight it's just they become less effective at force application throughput the race. Do their decrease in ratio of force is higher than bolts
@victorhopper6774
@victorhopper6774 Жыл бұрын
@@actual_random but their foot has to spend less time on the ground pushing while holding their body up to get the same stride. the amount of time the foot can spend on the ground pushing matters. another way of ''seeing'' this is you are actually slowing down while you are in the air. bolt just tends to be in the air less because he has a naturally longer stride. a quicker person can overcome this disadvantage but it will not be easy. i personally would like to see ryan crouser train for the 100. my bet is he is faster than many think.
@actual_random
@actual_random Жыл бұрын
@@victorhopper6774 No that's just incorrect. If their foot spends less time on the ground it's because their body can produce the required forces in a shorter period of time. Bolt doesn't produce for vertical force than his elite counter parts. It's his top speed which is a result of his excellent horizontal force application which gives him great top speed. Your foot spending more time on the ground isn't advantageous. It will spend as much time as it needs to produce the vertical force it needs. Producing unnecessary vertical force is just a waste of energy .
@victorhopper6774
@victorhopper6774 Жыл бұрын
@@actual_random you missed the fact that his longer legs allow his foot to contact the ground a little longer giving him more time to apply that horizonal force. no matter how you cut it time in the air is spent slowing down. Athing Mu has the same advantage over most of her competition and it shows more clearly with her. her feet are on the ground much longer. the broad jump shows this effect even more clearly, by the end of the jump their forward motion is all but gone.

The guy had immense cool under pressure, which is why he was able to every record and acquire gold every olympics. Having speed is one thing but the clutch mentality is another. Don't worry about stride length too much. Su Bingtian ran the same amount of steps his entire career, but ran very different times. FREQUENCY IS KING. Don't get choppy to have frequency, move your arms and legs fast. And hit the ground hard
@actual_random
@actual_random Жыл бұрын
Nah force and direction/effectiveness of force application are king. The whole stride length vs frequency thing is just a measurement of speed, speed = distance × frequency. It doesn't actually determine your speed. Imagine you are driving a car and you measure how far the car moves per wheel revolution. You can increase the revolutions but by decreasing the traction that means the car doesn't travel as far. Stride Length and Frequency are not independent variables.

@actual_random
@actual_random Жыл бұрын
@@yeet76231 No it's not. Stride Length x Stride Frequency is probably one of the dumbest things I've heard in the space of sprint science, and the debate about which is important. Coming from a physics background it's like most people don't even understand the physics. Firstly stride length and frequency are not independent variables, if you shorten your stride you can take more steps. Secondly stride length x frequency is just glorified distance / time but it's not actually looking at what causes you to be fast it's just measuring your speed. Your speed is determined by how much force you apply and in what direction, this will determine the length of your stride because it determine your flight time in the swing phase and that will determine the optimal time to place your foot down. If you don't believe me Here's JB Morin explaining which stride length x stride frequency is not what we should be looking at. Skip to 8:00. kzfaq.infodl1Ct0SCe_M?feature=share JB Morin is one of the people who actually know their stuff as far as sprint physics goes. As good as the sprint projects channel is he doesn't understand the physics that well he's just copying whatever he sees online.

@jakemccoy Жыл бұрын
@@realistic_delinquent I meant my original post sarcastically. In other words, people will find a way to form a theory around the sprinter that holds the world record. Right now, because of Bolt, people are constructing theories of why longer legs is an advantage. I recall, before Bolt, a guy his height was theoretically too tall to hold the record for the 100. That theory is no longer valid of course.

I looked into it and the difference between bolt and the others is his drf (decrease in ratio of force) and his top speed. What drf means is basically how much the horizontal force you apply decreases as you get further into the race. This is the commonality between all the fastest sprinters, Flo jo, Elaine, Bolt etc. They are able to keep applying horizontal force and therefore accelerate further and reach higher top speeds than the rest of the field. Meanwhile someone like Su Bingtian who is initially good at out of the blocks decreases his effectiveness the further out he gets. People like Su are able to apply higher relative forces than most of the other sprinters initially and this includes bolt. Bolts F0 is lower than a lot of other sprinters. Like Jacobs , Kerley, Degrasse, etc.

Force generation is not unique to Bolt. If you talk about it, you need a frame of reference to show why his force generation is an outlier. The 100m is not about speed maintenance, but acceleration to top speed. They don't run long enough require anything more than anaerobic energy output. So really its about stride length. If Tyson Gay were able to cover the 100m in 41 instead of 45 steps, he'd beat bolt fairly soundly
