3 Reasons Why Japanese Hate Beards

Жыл бұрын

A lot of KZfaq videos say that Japanese people really hate beards, but why is that? As far as I’ve done some research, there seem to be a few reasons.
1. Beards don’t suit Japanese men
2. There is a barbaric image
3. It is important to be humble in a business setting
The first reason is unbelievably simple.Japanese people in general have flatter faces which tend to not look so good with beards.
Also during the Edo period (1603~1868) growing beards were banned by law because it was a symbol of barbarians who engaged in gambling and street killing.
On the contrary, during the following Meiji period (1868-1912), there were many powerful people who grew beards as a form of authority under the influence of Western culture.
So some people seem to have the impression that “Having a beard = Looking arrogant/bossy.” Men themselves often avoid growing beards because it can make them look as if they lack modesty in business situations.
But of course, these are just general ideas and there are many successful Japanese people with beards. So, in the end, I think it’s important to find your own style.

@@t1995roger10 Everyone has certain spots that don't grow as well as others, unless you're really lucky. You let it grow out and then trim it back slightly to look neater. You can also brush it to cover up patches that are shorter or don't grow as well if you're lucky enough for those to be lower than the parts that aren't patchy. I guess you're right if you're talking about really short beards but i don't really see the appeal of shorter beards.

Beards do make people perceive you differently. I don't have the friendliest of faces out there, but I've noticed that when I grow my beard out, that takes it up to 11. People look genuinely scared if we make eye contact and look away almost immediately, or approach me in a more weirdly respectful (so as to not call submissive) manner. Thing is, I'm a pretty relaxed, easy going guy who doesn't even takes himself that seriously. C'est la vie for the bearded man.

Im just curious but were the other male staff that caught onto the trend young-ish? 20’s-30’s.. Was the principal at least a generation (or two) older than everyone else? When I went to high school in Tokyo, most of the young male teachers and foreign teachers had beards/mustaches, while the ones that were always clean shaven were in their 50’s- 60’s

For Japanese (and most east asian) guys it is /generally speaking/ rare to be able to grow a "full" beard and thats totally fine; theres some fascinating infographics about body hair density globally and how it varies between countries! Im in the same boat as them, as being very fair haired so my facial hair is randomly red, and without dense facial hair, its a lottttt more flattering to be clean shaven haha

@@mspaint93 In most East Asian cultures having faint facial hair was a male courtly idea such as during the Heian period. What kind of beard? Because yes, eastern Asians in general have a harder time to grow the kind of facial hair considered normal in the west. For example, I can barely grow a goatee (affectionately addressed to as "failed beard") so I used to shave it until I met my now wife. She liked how the goatee looked on my sharp face so much I just began trimming it instead.

There's a difference between a shaggy beard and a well groomed beard. Even in the west if someone has a curly and out of control beards, they are seen as homeless or usually druggies or just people that are generally unclean or untidy. But with groomed beards, it shows you take care of yourself and maintain your image.

A lot of KZfaq videos say that Japanese people really hate beards, but why is that? As far as I’ve done some research, there seem to be a few reasons. 1. Beards don’t suit Japanese men 2. There is a barbaric image 3. It is important to be humble in a business setting The first reason is unbelievably simple.Japanese people in general have flatter faces which tend to not look so good with beards. If you’d like to learn more about Japanese traditional culture, Kyoto, and social problems in Japan, please check out my channel & subscribe! *The content is based on personal studies and experience There is no intention of denying other theories and cultural aspects

I also just probably think it has to do with social pressure and conformity that you Don't see as many Japanese men have it. Especially if you're trying to get a job and here even in the west it usually is frowned upon to have a beard or to have long hair if you're a man during a job interview. And as far as your face type it really doesn't really matter it matters more how you shape beard, beard styles coming variety and it's just like you have to have the right kind of hairstyle to fit your face you need the right type of beard style to fit your face. Personally I like men with beards, you just have to know how to style it to your face and to take care of it. You can also put beard makeup to fill in some of the areas that don't grow as much. It's much like how women use brow pencils to fill in thin brows.

An interesting cultural difference. Here in Finland we have an old proverb "Ei parta pahoille kasva, turpajouhet joutaville" which literally means that a beard does not grow to bad people, muzzlehair to the useless, though I've heard that "paha" (bad) in this case is short of "pahainen" which actually means something or someone small and/or wretched. In other words beard is the emblem of a grown up man. This is stated also in our national epic Kalevala in the story where young Joukahainen challenges old Väinämöinen to a competition about which one of them knows and remembers more things. After he has listed a lot of rather ordinary knowledge Väinämöinen says "Lapsen tieto, naisen muisti, ei ole partasuun urohon", which translates as child's knowledge, woman's memory, not that of a bearded man. In other words beard = grown up man. Of course these are old views and nowadays no-one thinks that the men who prefer to shave would be somehow childish and unmanly. But we still know this is how our ancestors saw the question about beards.
