Another reason why most Malaysians are quickly gaining weight: our friendliness towards guests culture. When you visited someone's house, they'll keep insisting you to eat and eat and eat until your belly is full, especially during festivities. And it's hard to say "no" when it comes to food.

Yes, for me living here in Japan for 6 years, I can see many residents use bicycle and walking. Wow, so that is why my malaysian friend also say about "It is very hot in Malaysia, so need to walk?" Adding to culture part, I can say food is too integral to our nationhood too. You might hear about how some races have fight with other races in Malaysia, but when someone once said rendang must be crispy, the whole nation regardless of races was united in fury. Plus, really Malaysian mixes with other cultures through things like clothes, language and FOOD. But did you had the durian this time around?

I’ve been ‘stuck’ here in Malaysia all year (actually I’m avoiding going back to my own country). I’ve definitely noticed that Malaysians constantly drink sugary drinks, whether it’s sugary tea/coffee, fruity drinks, soda, etc. At all the food centers I eat at (2-3 times a day) I’m usually the only white guy and I’m the only person who seems to order a bottle of water to drink with meal. All that Milo, beer, milky tea, colorful juices contain so much sugar and calories🥤 so, yes, skip the drinks unless it’s water.
@jollycolours

You're very observant :D you can also bring your own water and save a few bucks here and there. That's what I do, but it's mostly because I don't enjoy any drinks other than warm water. 😆 Hope you're enjoying yourself here!

That is true. Here in Malaysia, we never say "I don't feel like eating." We only say "I don't feel like eating (name of the food)." There's always a food you wanna eat on that particular day. Hence, why Malaysians always find the question "Nak makan mana? (Where are we gonna eat?)" REALLY frustrating.

I guess why malaysian(KL)people don't walk so much... 1.traffic plans are completly made for cars and it makes quite hard to move in the city for walker. 2.As malaysia is tropical climat so we often encounter heavy rain and lightning.

I generally enjoy walking, and Malaysian weather is bearable sometimes, just that the sidewalk and pavement is not making it convenient/safe to walk or cycle in city (though they start to improve it segment by segment. Of course I couldn’t compare like how I enjoy walking in between 代々木上原駅 to 笹塚駅 effortlessly. Tokyo specifically has an excellent network that reduced Last-Mile problem, while Klang Valley still struggling with that. P/S: Out of context, 76 really did a good job to your hair.

I actually would love to walk or cycling to work but KL is not a very walkable city, and with the (dangerous) way many motorists are driving their vehicles here, it can be quite risky to ride a bicycle. Not to mention many people live far away from work outside of 'acceptable' walking distance. That's why many just chose to drive a car or ride a motorcycle instead of walking/cycling. As the saying goes; if you can't beat them, join them.

The reason why riding bikes in Malaysia is not popular anymore is due to the weather. I saw one vlogger mentioning that the weather forecast in Malaysia is crap. It can say it's not raining but you still get a downpour! 😂😂😂 My husband once bought a motorcycle to commute to and from work hoping he could get home faster and not get stuck in traffic jam. Unfortunately... he got drench very often, he eventually sold his motorbike! 😂😂😂 When my husband came to Malaysia, he was overweight but he has since managed to keep a good weight now even though the food here is heavenly. It is in how we balance our food intake and the many activities we can do. Lots of great place for hiking and many more! The key to being healthy in food haven is - balance!

Bicycle is not really used for our transportation. Most of us just ride bicycle during our childhood just for fun, some maybe used as the transportation to school or to run errand at a nearby shop. As our country is developing and the numbers of cars on the road increasing, people rarely used bicycle for transportation due to safety reason. But, still in some pekan, you can see elderly ride bicycle to the nearest shop or just short distance places. Even my late grandfather used to ride his old and classic bicycle to his favorite coffee shop regularly. Nowadays, people usually ride for exercising purpose. Ps : The most convenient road transportation medium for Malaysian would be a motorcycle, which making us moreeee .... relax. No need to kayuh-kayuh anymore. Hahahaha.

How very true those reasons are. But three reasons only, there should be more, wait for Aki part 2, "What makes foreigners get fat in Malaysia". All foreigners that comes to Malaysia get fat easily, unless he/she has a mental problem as Aki said. Selamat Datang!

I walk alot and I take train and bus to work daily, I spent more money on durable shoes so I don't have to buy shoes more quickly. If I ever miss my last scheduled bus after work or I stress from after work, I did walk 45 mins distance to the nearest train station (5-7mins by car). Yes, sugar intake needs to be aware in our daily diet, so when you order a drink, ask abang "teh tarik, kurang manis~". =w=

There are many for profit joints selling fatty food in Malaysia nowadays, other than increasing sedentary life style among Malaysians; making it very difficult ' to become thin' and 'continue to be thin' in modern day Malaysia. One of the reason why many are suffering from diseases cause by over and extra weight.

I agree to the weather issue... the hot weather can be sooo unbearable... and people will choose to catch grab rather than walking. Another reason why people are gaining weight in malaysia is because of the restaurants are closing at midnight and some are 24 hours that I frequented as well. These restaurants served food that taste sooo delicious too.... eat to our heart content near midnight and sleep afterwards is a real recipe for weight gain.
