Lots of good points John... although I actually quite like iceberg lettuce and as you say it stores well in the crisper; also it's not as soggy when made in a sandwich for school lunches! However, I find our loose leaf lettuce (like you are growing in the background) do store well in the crisper as well sometimes our cut lettuce lasts weeks so in general I certainly agree all lettuce is awesome :)

I have a couple of reasons to try it: 1. I love the stuff; crispier and sweeter than most other stuff, and plenty of roughage. 2. I've tried Romaine and some leaf variety with "butter" in its name with less-than-stellar results. Gotta try the iceberg next year.

i love lose leaf lettuce, i grow it as early as i can get it in the ground and also grow it indoors in the winter in my wood seller which barely stays above freezing temperature with cfls and still get great yields! about 5 to 6 harvests before they start to taste really strong but have yet to see them bolt in the cold temps =) unlike summer.. lol

I am digging that cap! :) Can also enjoy what nature grows on its own. I am eagerly waiting and watching a large cactus on the side of my neighbors driveway. They have said I can have all the cactus fruits when they are ripe... There are at least 200 unripe fruits on it currently if not more. It is a massive grouping of cactus plants. I will be in juice heaven. - Heidi

Keepskatin Prickly pears are awesome! I have no cactus growing in my yard and if I didn't harvest their cactus fruits they would just go to waste. Wildlife eat a lot of the cactus fruits but there is an abundance of cactus around here for them to eat. Last year the neighbors cactus wasn't touched and all the fruit just rotted. I don't want that to happen this year. :) Of course I will offer them some juice but they probably won't take it. They just have the cactus as a privacy screen and a decoration.

Actually iceberg has more vitamin e and omega 3 as compared to other lettuce ... and no omega 6 ... I was recently low on HDL and the doc wants me on fish oil which I won’t take due to supplements are reported to be rancid ... omega 3 and vitamin e are two things I show as low in when I run my raw vegan diet through chronometer ... I usually just put a cup or so in my salads for palatability, then I mix some combo of spinach, red leaf, arugula, cilantro etc... I plan to start having 3-4 cups a day and more other leafies too... while I have green salad daily, I have been wanting to eat larger amounts ... consuming iceberg will help me for sure

Hi John, I totally with you. Why grow things you can buy in the shops. Expand your thinking open your minds to new things. Try different stuff the taste is different with every vegetable you grow even if it's in the same family. Okay too grow some veggies you can buy compare flavour too shop bought ones. But grow as natural as possible so you can taste the real flavour of what your growing. Not some chemical crap you can buy. Thanks for another great video bye...

I'm growing iceberg lettuce in an aerogarden and it's fine. Due to limited space, I harvest the outer leaves often so the inner leaves can continue growing. I like the crunchiness of iceberg and I mix it in a salad with the darker greens.

Jericho Romaine Lettuce is delicious and more heat tolerant than anything else we have ever grown since moving to the sunny Deep South from the arctic of Wisconsin. We love red oak leaf and salad bowl, but we have already been over 90 degrees three times, and it could be 95 in a couple days, so romaine is our choice for the ability to last to July 4.

Another reason to grow iceberg is as a 'gateway' lettuce for young kids who are unwilling or not prone to eat greens. The mild, watery, crunchy flavor really appeals to kids, and gets them to like a leafy green, and perhaps more likely then to try others. I've seen this happen a lot with iceberg. Also, the water in iceberg is still 'living' electrical water, and is very hydrating, even if this type of lettuce doesn't have as many phytonutrients as darker leafy greens.

@RetiredSeniorChief Not to disrespect you since it's hard to gauge someone's tone when it's just written, but here's my comment. I guess it's a propaganda to you because you don't feel its effects. El Niño just ended here that was also at the same time as Summer. Now we are entering Monsoon season as of May 24,2016. Earlier than normal, with the threat of La Niña incoming. As with most people who live in comfort, with resources and can get aid from different sources, plus houses with temperature controls, I guess it's really hard for you to imagine just how hard it is for people like us who have been suffering for years because of Climate Change and have a hard time recovering due to, we have only ourselves to rely on. I'm now worrying and in fear how many abnormal storms will be entering our country while you only think about your First World problems. You have no idea how abnormally hot the Summer was with El Niño this year. So many people died because heat stroke isn't that known here. So was storm surge. Then more people being hit by lightning I know you guys know what to do in these situations but it's new and abnormal here. A lot of education is now ongoing because people have no idea what to do since a lot of weather related deaths and freak accidents are happening that only rarely happened before. I hope that you keep an open mind and research or at least try to be empathetic to countries with less than 1% carbon footprint but are suffering and dying at the effects of Climate Change. I hope that my comment won't be misunderstood. I just want to really share what's going on on this side of the planet.

I see so many loquat trees in my neighborhood full of fruit but no one eats them. I wonder why not. They are delicious. Is it legal to pick fruit from trees on someone's property?
@VladTheImpalerTepesIII
@VladTheImpalerTepesIII 8 жыл бұрын
Speaking for the USA, no, it is not legal. It is called "trespassing" and "stealing". In order to get to the tree you must enter private property which is trespassing. Taking fruit from a tree on private property is "stealing" because the tree and the fruit it bears is the private property of another citizen. They could, if they wanted to, press charges for theft. That said, in America, they tend to grow food for entertainment value and decor rather than food. That is why you see the fruit go untouched. Yes, it is painful to see, but unfortunately, it is not our concern. Private property is private property and you must respect that.

I think that iceberg lettuce gets diseased easily because the leaves are so tight and can not breath as easily, which of course is a bad thing when it rains a lot. Also when it comes to hybrids there are two types. 01) The type that companies make, they are usually a down grade especially when it comes to taste, they are developed with things like the following in mind looks, transporting well, how early they can be picked and long storing. 02) University made or personally made hybrids that have things like disease resistance, flavor, produce quality, and cold hardiness as main priorities.
