Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Rory Gallagher Licks From 1975.
I noticed an outpour of requests to feature Rory over the last several months and another flood of requests filtered through after some recent videos that were posted to the channel, so I decided it was finally time to take a look at some tasteful phrases and expressive ideas from this late-great Irish blues-rock pioneer and legend of the guitar.
This lesson focuses on a number of ideas that came from live footage during his 1975 performance at the Montreaux Jazz Festival and catches him in fine form and blistering the fretboard on every song. Rory's band was on fire and it's a great concert to watch if you haven't seen this footage of him before.
The licks/ideas shared here include some aggressive blues-rock phrases with Rory's signature energy, conviction, and bite. From well-timed blues phrases, expressive raked picking, extended double-stops ideas, flashy pull-off moves, and much more.
Rory's music and ideas were packed with raw energy, expression, and feel. These are the same nuggets of inspiration/information that you'll gain from this lesson. Give this episode a view, leave some comments and feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

He caught me and my pal touching his old strat from just off the riser when he came back to get it after he was done, about 1972?, and instead of being pissed off sat down with us and let me play it unplugged; the action was really high but he said he'd got so used to it if he played anything lower he slid over the top of a string when he tried to bend it - he was such a lovely friendly unpretentious bloke, I treasure that moment. We lose Rory and get to keep Prince Andrew.

I've found looking at lots of pro players guitars at hard rock in vegas and different places around, compared to my guitars, most play with high action. I've not seen any of the shredders guitars, to compare.

Remember Alan Murphy? I thought he was brilliant. I never forgot the time I sat and watched him play at a Fender roadshow as a demonstrator. Just incredible what he was doing and after it had finished I spoke to him and he offered me his guitar to play. The action was SO high I couldn't believe it and couldn't do anything on it. I asked how do you play it like that?! The reply...'you get used to it'... righto.

I do remember Alan Murphy, I didn't know that about his guitar but I heard Go West and wow, couldn't grasp what I was hearing till I actually saw him work his whammy bar live - another class act way above the usual pentatonic cliche. I read Larry Carlton's action is high too. I just remembered Rory G also said: he got way more sustain with it high so I said, joking, turn the amp flat out and he said it already was but anyway it's not the same. Of course, he's right but I need all the help I can get.

Yeah...just to mention Rory turned out Rolling Stones and as well The Cream after Calpton went.He was playing also bass, mandolin, saxophone, sitar, harmonica, banjo, dulcimer and dobro. He won his first guitar competition at the age of 12 and with that reward he bought his first electric guitar.Well, the rest is history :-) He was also a faithful owner of hardest working Stratocasters in history of music. That guitar was some magic guitar :-) Long Live Rory Gallagher !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Always loved Rory ,such a humble guy,no BS,just straight on the money ,I saw him play in the U.K.,and was entranced, looked around some way through the gig,and everyone was stood up ,silent ,like hypnotised ,never seen a gig like it,he played ,virtually non stop, for more than two hours, acoustic ,slide and his LP tracks, altering his tunings ,during songs, then back again, one gig ,I feel priviledged to have seen him ,before his premature demise, a special artist, jeans a checked shirt,no gimmicks ,a trio, but what a night.

Since I suck I have to slow most lessons down 50% on the KZfaq player. This is the only channel where the guy's voice doesn't turn into a demon...... You just sound like a chill really stoned dude at that speed lol On a serious note, these live performances are goldmines and his band doesn't get enough credit. The bassist is just a beast. Montreaux 79 Shadow Play for instance is basically the same riff forever and he never loses his drive or enthusiasm- McAvoy is almost like a huge Rory fan who jumped on the stage enjoying the show while just happening to be hammering a bass the whole time too

Rory could turn on the excitement in the audience especially in smaller venues when he would let the fans get up close enough to touch that famous Strat and as you say it was all raw energy. Jimi once said in an interview, when asked how does it feel to be the greatest guitarist?, " I don't know, why don't you ask Rory Gallagher?". I don't think there will ever be a greatest guitarist, all the legendary ones and some lesser known ones are great and it's all a mater of TASTE. Thanks for another great vid David.

I am so pleased that you have made this video. Being an ardent Rory Fan since the early 70’s - I first saw Rory in 1973 at the Southend Kursaal England, UK, when I was 17. Very sadly I went to his last London show in October 1992. I have lost count of the number of his gigs in between. I strongly feel that some of his magical years were form the mid 70’s. I think it’s great that his legacy is being recognised today. Your choice of licks capture the brilliance of the man and you have done an excellent delivery here of some of his unique style. Cheers form the UK….

things about RG that struck me as a listener/non-player: speed-muted solo (e.g. end playout 'Hot Coals' on Irish Tour; live versions of 'Take What I Want') that I didn't hear again til hearing Al DiMeola; some early jazzy riffs ('there's a light'; Taste 'it's happened before') that I didn't hear again til hearing jazz; and re. the ton of blues/rock riffs: c.'72, ZZ Top supported RG (when ZZ had hits, RG supported them: Rory had no "hit songs") and RG labeled Billy G. fellow traveller re. really understanding blues style
