I’m glad I found your video. I started playing oboe a few years ago and I still find the breathing part a real drag. My instructor, who has played for45yrs has none of these issues and it is always getting in my way. Hoping it works for oboe players too.

I love these. After having COVID in 2020 I found I had some lung damage and had to avoid playing for a couple of months to heal some. My capacity greatly diminished and I play bari primarily. I did exercises very similar to these to get back on track, but I like yours better for where I am now. (Just recently moved from a Selmer C* to a 5 mouthpiece and a 7 for jazz. Im sure these will help me get stronger with these new mouthpieces.) Thank you for all you do.

Jamie, great stuff again. Maybe another topic for another video: please explain, what we are experiencing and referring to as BACK PRESSURE. Is it depending on mp&reed or also on horn? Does it come from reed closing while vibrating? Thanks Dirk

Well, I guess it just means you have to overcome a certain amount of resistance to force a lot of air through a narrow gap, as opposed to, say, steaming up a window, where all your breath disappears almost instantly with nothing to resist it. Set ups can definitely affect resistance.

Came across your video last night. Great advice. Also, thanks so much for the free PDF. I've learned a lot of valuable info from your channel. Very grateful. (btw, Kudos for being able to play the Brecker solo on 'Native New Yorker. Even though I didn't know who Brecker was at the time, as a 13-14 year old clarinetiest, I remember being spellbound by the relatively short solo. 😉)

Hello Jamie, great video with very good breathing exercises, thank you very much... one question, which mouthpiece would you recommend for soprano saxophone to make modern music, I need projection, modern sound, brightness, flexibility and possibly not metal ... That's a tricky question. What might suit me, might not suit Jamie, or you. Budget is a factor. In the UK there's a few companies that do mouthpiece trials or get to a shop with lots of mouthpieces!

Sounds like you need a mouthpiece with a pretty wide tip opening and a baffle. I’m not really the ultimate gear guy to advise you more than that, and I haven’t tried soprano mouthpieces recently.

Merci beaucoup I encounter a problem on a single piece the game is easy but hyper repetitive. I end up out of breath, out of breath, I hyperventilate. I don't know where to take my breath and I take a lot of little breaths,so my lungs are full without ever being able to empty them. and am in a nameless discomfort.

Try to fully exhale before taking the next breath. These exercises should help.
