Grand Master, Kiyohide Shinjo, 9th dan, founder and chairman of the Kenyukai Uechi-Ryu Karate-Do Org.
in his younger years participating in the world karate championship, bare knuckle karate fights.
Shinjo Sensei was though enough to win this tournament 9 years in a row earning him the nickname, Okinawa Superman.

I was told that Shinjo sensei's opponent in this video was actually killed. Not sure if it's true or just legend passed around by Uechi-ryu students, but that's what I was told.

I did my Shodan testing in front of Shinjo and some other Okinawans in 1974. I heard then he had killed someone in a tournament, but don't know if it was this tournament or a BS story. I tend to think it was true. he had some nasty looking kicks, especially his side kick.

if the guy was in a high guard it would have saved his life fighting in low guard is one of the biggest mistakes in karate but sure shinjo sensei is an animal without doubt

He referred to himself as a "gentle soul" in one interview. He was 65 years old at the time of the interview and was splitting boards with his fingertips and breaking baseball bats with his forearm. I refer to him as a very scary man with the sincerest respect. Yikes.

Sensei Shinjo and Uechi Ryu Karate both are strong. He shouldn't take decisions to enter competition. It will be a fatal move then...😊

Well, in hindsight it's easy to be a smart ass. However, when my opponent switches stance (as Shinjo did before the mawashi), I will immediately counter-attack. Moreover, Shinjo's opponent actually presented his right side by leaning far to the right. He really seemed to be scared of Shinjo.

The kick came immediately after the stance switch, at best you would have caught the kick at a shorter distance and got clocked by his shin instead of his foot.

He wasn't scared in allot if schools and modern like karate they are usually ridged and fight like that. Especially in today's modern ma they do that.

This looks like maybe one of the final matches since the crowd is pretty engaged. The guy looked somewhat frighten of Shinjo Kiyohide. He was a 9 time world champion before he retired and son of one of Okinawa’s most legendary karateka

One thing I know about sensei shinjo he doesn’t like the Osu phrase he despises it. My sensei is a black belt under Grand master Sensei Kanei Uechi he’s in his mid 70’s and has pictures with grand master shinjo back in the early “70’s” n he said it was true sensei shinjo killed not one but two opponents in a kumite. And in dojo yaburi when guys from the army bases in Okinawan would come in to challenge them he send a few people to the morgue.
