Great to see the different options at each level. Our hobby is saturated & it makes attending things like Can-Jam so enjoyable. I remember budgeting my first $1k for a system. Fast forward almost a decade & I’m debating on preordering the Susvara Unveiled lol.

They are both very good channels with a combination of technical analysis and subjective feedback. Some reviewers go way higher on objective measurements while others wax poetry with only subjective details. Some other good reviewers are: SoundNews (Sandu), wave theory, goldensound, Nemo propaganda, zero fidelity, jays iyagi, Thomas and stereo, new record day, Erin’s audio corner, and Andrew Robinson. I’ll also do Darko and Audiophiliac as well but they are super industry. British audiophile is 1 more channel that is fun

They look like great suggestions! Once you get up into those prices, there’s a lot of good possible combinations. There’s also some great combinations in the 2-5 k between these two reviews. One of the best I’ve heard for less than 5 (at current prices) is the HE1000SE (saving to buy!) with the Violectric DHA V380 all in one. The warmth and nearly tube like holographic presentation of the Violectric mixed with the resolution of the HE1000Se just works so well. I’d love to hear the last combo you recommended with the focal utopia 2023..

Thanks Lachlan , this was a fun video- was a bit surprised you choose the utopia / mezes over the susvara - but then again I have only heard the latter. Could you make a video where you go into detail about what your preferences are for the sound you are looking for in headphones? This would give your viewers a reference when going through your reviews/recommendations. Cheers!

I'm going to do some top headphones lists at various prices soon so that should give a little insight as I describe why I chose each option. Overall though, I value soundstage size and particularly depth (why I don't favour things like Edition XS). What's also very important to me and the reason the Susvara isn't here is that I also like a sound that's natural and that means having enough bass weight and presence to balance the treble. The challenge with the Susvara and why everyone thinks they need more power is that they need warmer and fuller amps to balance their otherwise lean and dry sound. They're wonderfully technical and resolving, but not as enjoyable to me as Elites / Utopias (2022) without some help from EQ or specific amp choices.
@elba_magellan
@elba_magellan 24 күн бұрын
@@PassionforSound thank you that clarifies things- I go for perceived naturalness and there are very few headphones ive come across more natural than the susvara - but your amp specific caveat makes sense. I run the sus off a vioelectric-us5 nimbus/bartok chain and it seems to do it for me. Looking forward to your future vids.

So glad I started at the bottom of the ladder with the legendary FiiO EO7K and a pair of Sony MDR V6 or something. Didn't have a lot of spare cash courtesy of an aging sports car and raging drug habit, so took me many moons to put together an end game setup I was happy with. The journey was great fun.

Hi Lachlan, I love this format where you're providing pairings based upon a variety of budget levels. I suspect there are many audiophiles like me that invest a much larger piece of their budgetary pie on their main speaker system, and a proportionally less amount on their headphone system. With that in mind, it would be really cool to focus on the lower, yet high quality tier. For starters, I would love to know what one could pair a Mojo2 with in order to take that to a next level headphone pairing. For example, could the Mojo2 be used as a preamp to drive one of the headphone amps you covered in todays vid. Or could it be paired with an Archel 3 or Erish 3 from Geshelli? Or even one of the lower tier, more portable amp options from Schiit? Thank you for helping to move the industry foreword...one audiophile at a time.

having an ZMF Atrium on it's way home to me in a few weeks, I am torn between adding a extra Tube AMP to my K9 AKM if I take some longer listening sessions. I either want to go for the xDuoo TA 20 Plus as my budget or the Cayin HA-2A as my "highend" option after saving some more money. Also I often wonder what jobs some audiophiles do work in. For me the Atrium, K9 AKM and for example the Cayin HA-2A would be together about ~5.000€ which makes my wallet burn.

@PassionforSound 19 күн бұрын
Sorry, I'm not with you. Which HDMI connection are you referring to?
@mopnem
@mopnem 19 күн бұрын
@@PassionforSound The BDA-3 has 4 HDMI inputs. Some say hdmi has a higher transfer of data implying better sound than other inputs. Would you agree for a dac? Additionally when upgrading (& settled on headphones) do you recommend dac or amp first?
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 19 күн бұрын
I don't know the details of the BDA to really comment, but HDMI is generally reserved for signals involving home theatre and television, not audio - unless they're I2S connectors and that's not clear with the BDA. As for what I would recommend upgrading first, it would all depend on what you already own and where the weakest link currently sits.

I need recommendations from you guys, please! Im thinking of upgrading my headphone setup in the next 2-4 years. I plan on buying used gear if possible. As I live in germany chord, spl and violectric is relative cheap. Shiit is expensive. I have an "entry level" chain. Smsl su-8 dac into xlr splitter box to a90 and aaa789. Also dac rca to succa tube pre amp with analog eq (custome tubes for soundstage and detail), into little dot mk3(stock tubes for warmth) into both solid state amps. Source is spottify with hq player upsampling. Ill probably not change that any time soon... Im using lcd4z(now broken), lcdx,hedd2 and hd800 from the various amps to tweak the sound a bit. I have balanced cables for everything. I loved the lcd-4z with the tube pre-amps but the hedd2 sounds lovely enough for me to not miss them and for me its more comfortable anyways. Budget is relative to the sound improvements😂 so im hesitant to spend really big all at once... I love the tube warmth and sound stage but I like hearing details in the music. Too much base slam and bloat hurts my ears (og empyrean on my chain). Hd800 in aaa789 is knives in my ears... I like building a chain between my gear and adding some analog eq. I know that high end gear makes a difference. I had the opportunity to listen to og empy on hugo tt2 with mscaler playing spottify. Totally different from what I heard with my chain. Im greatfull for any suggestions. Even if its to save my money😂

@@PassionforSoundthanks for your reply! I just went through your recommendations. It pretty much looks like my research... either stay below 2k a piece or go big😅 I was hoping to find something in between that's affordable once used and gives close to the highend gear performance... Its probably better for me to build a diverse and affordable chain in the "midfi" price range. Or wait a couple of years. Still those used tt2s between 3 - 4k...😂 Next highend in munich I will be running around with my own headphones and listen to stuff!

The R26 includes a streamer via ethernet only (no WiFi). Alternatively, something like the EverSolo DMP-A6 would be a great option with the Qutest

@@michelrainville1094 these set ups assume direct USB. If you're to get into I2S/SPDIF/AES EBU you're into DDC/streamer territory which assumes you've invested another 1700$ on Roon/HQP and have a laptop with a more than adequate graphics card and CPU to upsample and offload streaming services. This whole venture is another 800-2000 in hardware with the life time licenses for the above services adding up to a potential 3700$ extra in streaming/DDC source services. Nevermind the OVERKILL of "word" clocks to slave dacs and DDC's which are compatible with outboard dedicated clocking. Tack on another 2k USD in high end superfluous clocks operating at music rate multiples (rather than 10mhz WORLD clocking) Edit: some very dedicated and savvy streamers buy whole Mac minis or other "audiophile" dedicated servers to operate as a Roon end point which you may as well budget a whole computer you will install Linux on for the sole purpose of streaming music.
@PassionforSound

@michelrainville1094 it's mostly comprehensive, but each setup does require a source which could be a computer, streamer, smartphone, etc.

@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 22 күн бұрын
I'm not sure yet, but can answer that soon. I can tell you right now that they're very different though because the qualities of the Gemini can change drastically depending on the tube you install. The Pietus Maximus will always sound the same.

To not even mention RME ADI-2 variants in the video is quite mind boggling specially in the 5K and 7.5K. The amount of versatility, flexibility and sound customization is unmatched. The ADI-2/4 Pro SE + Atrium in the 5K and can scale the RME into the 7.5K with an amp or stay/start at 5K with the RME and save for the CFA3 amp and literally run any dynamic and planar headphone with it along the journey.

I don't think ribbons need special amplifiers per se... Maybe you meant electrostatics?
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 23 күн бұрын
Nope, I meant ribbons. They are extremely low impedance and require either a special (see Schiit Jotunheim R) or a special adaptor box that presents a higher impedance load to the amp.
@djhmax09
@djhmax09 23 күн бұрын
@@PassionforSound ah that is true but I guess if you're talking "serious" setups the higher end amps should be able to manage that (not all)
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 23 күн бұрын
No. We're talking 1 ohm type loads. Any amps not designed for ribbons will see them as a short circuit.

I feel cheated if I'm spending top tier money for a dedicated head-fi system that lacks the versatility to drive speakers. My McIntosh stereo system lacks the power to drive the most demanding magnetic planar headphones like the HiFiMan HE-6. So ampsandsound makes a black box headphone adapter for using 2-channel speaker amps to drive headphones. See where I'm going with this suggestion. I'm not going to buy boutique brands over x-amount of dollars in price, I only want brand names above a high price point like McIntosh, Denon, Yamaha, Accuphase, the resale value becomes a factor

if you are spending more then a thousand dollars on a amp it better be tube. I am thinking for myself. If you are willing to spend 5000 dollars on a headphone you might as well buy an insane speaker system. I would imagine a speaker system would be way more satisfying
