I used to love my job, everything I did. I stayed late, came in early just because I loved what I did. But there was a shift. Company restructure brought in a new director, secrets of future plans emerged, the scope of my job description was reduced and focused in areas I'm 100% in to. Now I'm slow to come in, leave early, and my general give a darn is out the window. I spend more time dreaming about going home.

There IS NO NURSING/HEALTHCARE WORKER SHORTAGE. There is a shortage of nurses who will tolerate verbal and physical abuse from management and patients. There is a shortage of nurses who will tolerate risking their license unmanageable and dangerous patient loads. There is a shortage of nurses willing to work for low pay and crappy benefits while the C-suite folks make multi million dollar bonuses for meeting budgets. Colleges pump out thousands of new grad nurses every semester. When a nurse gets fed up and quits, they *might* replace him/her with a new grad for much less pay. Healthcare facilities run with the "nursing shortage" narrative to get away with dangerously low staffing levels and shift blame onto the employees. It's not burnout, we won't tolerate the abuse anymore!

Never loved a job. I always loved the paycheck. Things I love to do dont pay and things that pay good is not really something I care about doing. Maybe I'll find the job I love when I stop needing a paycheck. I do excel in the workplace.

@@OneSmileAtATime. Awesome. I have found there is life beyond toxic jobs. I think most people are too burned out, too scared to try for various reasons (i.e. feeling too old to start over, having family responsibilities, etc). I made to leap. Really and truly a leap of faith. Could not stay in the previous job. It was draining me and each day I woke up asking myself why I was there at that specific job. I knew something better existed. I just had to try to find it. I did and I have never been happier. I have a boss who puts family first and tells us to do the same, coworkers look out for each other and I love what I do. Can't ask for more.

The burnout portion speaks to me. I work in mental health and that’s the exact reason I picked up Coleman’s book and started tuning in. I’m trying to get out of this field before it becomes too hard to fully function in a healthy way. Such great and helpful content.

I work at the hospital that struck a core with me. The burn -out portion I feel I'm drained most of the time. I feel their just not into me I also work 3rd shift I ask them a few times to change me to 2nd shift. Nothing gets done! I see a turn around constantly from people quitting I don't blame them I see the toxic work environment the way they speak to people. I'm currently looking for another job. To many red flags I need out. I work in the EVS department as a supervisor

I have been at my job since 2017. I can tell you right now, they just aren't that into me. I have done everything right, but they never move me up or on. I am at the point now where I just do not care. I only care when it comes to helping the public, because I am aware that THEY need me. I have been dreaming for quite some time. I dream of making my own movies. Well... I just completed my first short film. Though my day job sucks, I have gained skills from it that work well in film production. I am still at the job, but I can see the importance of dreaming and how I can eventually get out of my current situation.

Thank you for this, especially your definition of a toxic workplace. I left a truly toxic workplace 6 months ago after multiple false accusations by my supervisor who would not allow me to speak with the HR committee members at the church where I worked. The stress relief is gone for me. Unfortunately she has continued the same/similar behaviors with my successor.

Reminder that not every career is based on someone's passion and purpose or mission. Otherwise no one would ever work a "dirty job" a la Mike Rowe. My husband works IT with long strings of comma separated values. Also known as EDI. He is not passionate about strings of data. 😆 His life purpose is not maintaining strings of data. But, he's good at it and is paid commensurately. If he enjoys any of it, it would be the problem solving end of it. He is task oriented and moves effortlessly from task to task in sequential order. His passion and purpose is his family and his church.

23:28 I know a guy that worked in the medical field - he read the procedures for ‘religious exemption’ and he decided not to even try it. First of all you have to sign your name as approving of the vacks but only refraining for religious reasons, second, your name is put in a database and the one who approves the exemption has to sign off that they entered you in the database. Will they target you? I don’t know, but he didn’t like the sound of a forced declaration and registering for the government’s ‘naughty’ list.

I liked my job and co workers but had to quit because my Supervisor kept gas lighting me. Pretty sad one bad apple had to ruin it for me. Oh well, looking for a new job now. It’s hard for me to land jobs too and I quit. So anyone and everyone can quit a job without having one lined up. Unless you are the breadwinner and keeping the roof over the heads of the family.

For me, #3 led to #1. I love what I'm doing, but stopped caring much and sometimes let the mistakes slide through. My boss is not present at all. In 2 years I did not have a single 1 on 1 or coaching, when ask, he says - well, we talk with you, that should count. He starts many things, but drops half way. guess who has to figure out and finish. And he dropped the ball big time, and the whole team got written up, coz "we're a team, we fail as a team and succeed as a team". I realized that no matter how high I jump, I hit the ceiling. He compromised our branch in so many ways (legal as well), but since there were no big consequences and we are still highly profitable and the job gets done, the corporate does not care. So now, when I see he messed up, I do not fix it, unless it is super urgent. I act like I did not see it. After all, it is him who has to check on my work, not the other way around. I more and more often find myself getting to work and just sitting in the car to be late on purpose, just enough for the system to flag me.

Not totally “toxic” but boss rules out of fear and pressure. Combined with my ego and fear of failure… is pushing me to leave but haven’t been able to find the time after trying so hard everyday to do the work and being mentally exhausted and just want to forget my pain. Then the next day is the same hope things will be different. The money is great and hate to lose that but just don’t feel right. Taking meds for depression. Problem is: I don’t trust that it not just me and I am taking demanding boss as a way to run away from a hard role. Am I just looking for that non-existent job that has low stress and high pay? Maybe I am just a wimp and not performing because I am not good (or in a field I just don’t like - sales). So the biggest thing holding me back is: is it me or the job? That is what screwing with my mind. Perhaps this bad company (and other agree it’s not a great company) has my confidence shot and now have me questioning my ability to succeed elsewhere.

My problem is I like my job, but they don't pay me and play hardball to give me a raise maybe I should just quit. Would you stay with a company when you worked there for over 13years currently the top performing field I.T. in area and likely the lowest paid on staff. their starting pay to replace the retiring tech is equal or more than what I'm getting paid; its insulting?

I have all 3 of these signs, including sexual harrassment that ive been dealing with for the last 6 years. I've applied to 12 jobs in the last 2 weeks and can't even get an interview. I went to art school and wanted to do something with art but never developed a creative streak and still cant draw and come up with any way to create. Im screwed no matter what. Im always gonna be stuck working jobs i hate and want nothing to do with, if i can even get another job. Listening to ken makes me feel worse. If i had the guts i would call myself, but i think im doomed anyway. I cant even earn a living. I have to live with my mom and im 35 years old. Its so humiliating.
