Hey Everyone! Decided to compile a few shaders in Blender 3D with Eevee I use in my work and some from my tutorials. These are great if you’re trying to learn how to replicate 2d works in 3d. And they’re great for combining with grease pencil! Again, I’m sure there’s more optimal setups, but I hope you guys find this helpful!

@@nile2227Eevee. Not sure what Cycles is needed for but the two renderers have different abilities. There are things Cycles can do but Eevee can't. And this method of shading is something Eevee does well but Cycles can't do. Specifically, (and simplified) Eevee can sample it's own results. This gives it the ability to use its output as input to itself. Cycles can't do that. At least not directly.

Hello there. I have an issue while applying these shaders. For example if I am creating a pillar which has much height as compared to length and width then these shaders work very different. Even if I am rotating that pillar 360 degrees then some faces are dark and some are very light. I think that maybe adding more lights is a solution but it didn't work. This is the first shader tutorial that I followed that actually worked. Seems like every time there's an update everything breaks. Is there any documentation that explains exactly what each element does? For example, linear light vs multiply - it's great that I know what that does, but I don't know why it does it, which makes it hard to remember. Either way, thanks a lot!
@kevandram
@kevandram Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching the video! I'm sure there is documentation for those specific Blending Modes. I'm generally going by other art programs with the same terminology. Multiply multiplies the luminosity of the blend color by the base color and Linear Light burns/dodges the colors by decreasing/increasing brightness.

In a way with the separate rgb node and using mix nodes set to specific blending modes for shadows and highlights. Thanks for your comment and for watching! It depends on how you're using the shaders, but in theory, you could just mix the texture together with the shaders using a mix node and the mode set to Overlay or Screen. Hope that helps!

Hey, amazing tutorial. I have an issue though, I'm really digging the watercolor shader, but it doesn't come out like yours when I do it - it lacks these "brush strokes" that you have, it looks more like a more complex shader nr.1. Your colors swim into each other and the borders are mixed. Can you maybe explain what did you do to get that effect? I even left the original light of the scene (as I didnt see you change it), but I still struggle to replicate that particular look. I went in window by window in shaders and I think I have replicated the shader, but it still doesn't look like a watercolor. Which of the settings could I have messed up?
@Danny3vans
@Danny3vans Жыл бұрын
Hey, I was wondering, if I wanted to use the second shader for like a grass field, what would I have to do to make it ract to light sources, like the sun for example? because right now it looks like a plane with the colour gradient going from dark to light with a small part in the middle being the middle color
@kevandram
@kevandram Жыл бұрын
Hey Danny, thanks for your comment. As it is now, the shader will only react to light in terms of coverage, not color. If you want it to react to light sources, you'll need a more involved set up. For example, using an additional color ramp and mix node set to multiply or lighten on top of the original setup. For some great ideas, I'd recommend checking out Lightning Boy Studios channel. Hope that helps!

Wow! Thanks for sharing this One quick question; I've been planning to learn Blender, mmm, for 6-7 years and I haven't started yet :)) And this video of yours make me hungry again. So my aim is to reach like this toonish, vector stylish and a bit isometric 3d style. Not planning to go polish renders and more. So question is, your grease pencil course fine for me? I've just open Blender 9-10 times and did nothing more for years. Even couldn't start with a cube. I'm a After Effects, explainer guy with an art and painting background. Sorry for the long post, many thanks. Update: I found the answer on your course page and there were suggestions.
@kevandram
@kevandram Жыл бұрын
So sorry for the late reply and glad you were able to find suggestions! TBH, I would recommend just learning Blender and working with meshes in a non photorealistic style first before grease pencil. If you come from an AE background, that knowledge might transfer over better to a mesh workflow. Also, I think that method works well with the isometric/toon style you're going for since it's more easily accommodates perspective. Grease pencil could be a good place to start, but it definitely geared more towards illustrators and animators. Hope that helps!

Hi, i loved the third watercolor shader a lot and used it for my entire movie scenes. But i was planning to render them in cycles, since people suggest that saying it looks more professional when calculating lights. Is there a way to make it work with cycles too? I realized it too late and I am out of time...
@kevandram
@kevandram Жыл бұрын
Hey Emma, so sorry about the confusion. Does it need to be rendered out in Cycles? Since the direction you're going for is stylized, I don't know how much of an impact that switch would make. If you were going for something realistic, that's where you'd notice the difference. I'd stick with Eevee and up the Resolution % (in Output Properties) to 150 or 200 for more quality. If you want to switch to Cycles, it'd require a lot more effort to change the shader and achieve this look. You can use Toon BSDF (a Cycles-only shader) for a basic toon shader or go here for some ideas: blender.stackexchange.com/questions/33871/is-there-really-a-way-to-make-a-true-toon-shader-material-in-cycles .

So sorry for the delayed reply. Check to make sure you're adjusting the shaders in Render Preview Mode. This will more accurately reflect what your shader will look like when rendered out. Also, check to see you don't have any hidden lights that could potentially affect the shaders. Hope that helps!

Honestly I'm not sure there is a way to animate the color ramp shader, sorry!

Do you find that your color palette is restricted by the techniques you are describing? I think the spooky house was very cool but generally I see grease pencil represented with pastel colors. Is there a reason for that? , can you recommend any artists that might be pushing the color schemes in a different direction?

Hmm, I think with any art program, it just depends on how you use it. IMO, I don't think it's restrictive at all, maybe in terms of functionality and UI which could use improvement. But as far as a tool, it's complete. If you look at the project videos on my channel, most of them incorporate grease pencil in some way. I just tend to lean toward bright/saturated colors. But, there are artists like Łukasz Rusinek (@yosifol on KZfaq) that go in a different direction.

Will it work if I bake that to a texture map?
@kevandram

Unfortunately not since these shaders are only possible in Eevee.

Doesn't Cycles already have a BSDF Toon shader?

Sure but it doesn’t give the same results and this isn’t for cycles.

It's strange, I did all the steps for the second shader and still my dots are way too small. Well, they are deformed by the armature too but I guess it's normal.

Depending on the scale of your model and armatures, it'll definitely need a bit of a adjusting!

Can all these be replicated in Autodesk Maya?

I'm sure it's possible to achieve a toon shaded look in Maya. However, I'm not entirely sure how to do so since I'm not really familiar with it.

Maybe I´m totally aside, but: I see shader production in a 3D- Object and I can´t find out how to transfer this shader to my 2D-Object

So sorry for the delayed reply. Unfortunately, these will only work for meshes and not grease pencil objects.
