Hi Friends, in this tutorial I am explaining how to achieve shining light and depth in your painting. I share what is very important to do, many know but keep ignoring. I also talk about values, edges and color temperature and how to interpret what you see in real life to paint glowing light.
I show 3 examples of how to achieve soft edges and how to paint gradient, all in relation to light.
Im also introducing my first give away - a tube of Lavender by Holbein, looking forward to your comments!

My first thought was: "Take a napkin and remove paint when it is still wet! Whoosh!" I saw this trick in the demo of Alvaro Castagnet. 8) Thank you for these tutorial with easy-to-repeat exercises! ^_^

Haha, yes, he does this :) he is very entertaining, isn't he! but I noticed napkin takes too much, which can create a hard edge between removed paint and wet area, the brush is a bit gentler, leaves moist surface behind and nice soft edge

Hola Nina pienso que esa zona se ve con mas brillo porque el blanco es mas intenso que en otros lugares y los valores tonales metidos en el blanco son los mas claros; todo esto en contraste con la region de valores mas fuertes oscuros que es la parte inferior y lateralde la nube. Gracias

Thank you Satish! I'm so glad. Yes, values are very important, the contract between the light and dark definitely show the light, but to make it glow we need all 3 elements there to be present: values, edges, color temperature. This is why it's a difficult thing to achieve.

At 3.24 Before watching the rest and not reading the comments ‘glow’ has a kind of aura around it so I would think blurred eges of the light into darker area. With other mediums glow can be achieved by layering the lighter colour radiating from the area you wish to glow over the surroundingcolour.

Thank you! I add a touch of cad.red to Yellow Ochre and don't mess with blue over yellow on paper. I try to layer the blue on top of yellow with just one or two brush strokes. It's similar to making a "marble cake" you mix chocolate into vanilla swirling gently to make pattern but not to the point so it all goes pale brown. Hope it makes sense ☺️

For the give away (I’ll try my best to be lucky, haha.): I guess it is all about the use of soft edges and the progressive transition between strong contrasting values, a bit like if the white was bleeding in the dark value. Hard edges will permit to see where the light hits, but you won’t feel that it bounces around and “glow” as if you were using soft edges.

Thank you! I like all of them, Holbein, WN, DS: vibrant, saturated (little goes long way), textured...I just pick the hues that I find more suitable for mixing together and getting good harmony. They all have their unique pigments. DS does Lunar paints, Holbein Lavender, Cobalt Turquoise, Jaune Brilliant, etc. WN does great neutrals: B.Sienna, Ochre, Sepia, N.Tint - no other brand nailed it like them... it's impossible to choose one 🤣

OK, so I paused it and this is my answer why I think it glows: it's the light is next to the darkest darks and also edges the some edges are soft and warm.

Thank you Anne! No, that's right, I'm going to update this video, it's new. NEEF flat 1 1/2 inch (38mm) squirrel #4880. It's very good, my favorite so far. It's soft yet holds shape and very precise if you use it's corners, almost like a tip of a mop. I've got 2 inch and 1 inch, but 1 1/2 seems to be most versatile.

This is so simple and effective , so I have to try. I was wondering often - what gives that special shine to the clouds ??? And I did not have an answer ...... adding some warm yellow seams logical to me, but there is no yellow glowing cloud ... and I was stuck with lifting color with the napkin .. sometimes looks ok , sometimes not .. Any way your tutorials are one of the best on youtube in watercolor subject. Greetings from Serbia :)

Thank you Olivera! Napkin can be a little too much. It takes a lot of moisture out, but it's important to have some left on the paper, other wise you get a hard edge instead of a soft one. Brush works better in this instance, it's already damp, so it can't take all the water out. In other words, when I leave a bit of moisture behind, the paint around goes back to it and this is what makes it soft. If you dry it completely, there is no substance for the paint around to run into. Same as a drop of water on the table, it stays sharp edges on dry surface, but if it was moist it would softly spread.

It depends on your painting style. But, a small angle helps to control the flow. If you paint flat the wash will spread in all directions, go up, down, left, right... But, if your board is lightly tilted, you can expect that it flows down and act accordingly.

it seems to me that to get a 'glow', there needs to be softer 'edges', so that there is some overlap of the lightest areas that kind of seeps into, or gently overlays, a darker section of the image,

Thank you Cherie! Yes, it does! So true. It's a top part of a pocket size colour wheel. I ripped it off 🤣 as I don't use the other parts and they always seem to be on the way. You can get it from a general art supply shop. But, I believe you can get a grey scale tool on it's own, if you hunt for it. I was impatient and got whatever they had in store.

It is possible in watercolor to make a grisaille and then add color without losing transparency... I know it is, but I have never done it personally. Have you done it? Please tell us. Thank you! This is an interesting though. Yes, it's perpendicular to the sunlight and it is reflective, so it is reflecting and dispersing the light, so the edge between the clouds and sky looks blurry = soft.
