Just like at the Gym, New Years means New Years Resolutions and new Art Goals! This is a good thing...except when we set toxic goals that are designed to create art block and disappointment for us down the road.

My goal this is not "draw everyday" but more so "draw more consistently" because although drawing everyday makes for a good habit it also can lead to burning out quicker, which drawing 3 or 4 times a week doesn't do as much and you get some breaks in between days when you don't feel like drawing or when life gets in the way.

I feel like that's where I'm at like I want to draw but I'm not going to draw everyday like I used to especially when art to me is supposed to be a hobby. I feel like the only time I would do that is if I really want to and I find the pieces I'm working on are really fun lol XD

That's exactly what I did too! Last year I decided to limit my drawing sessions to 3 times per week. That way if I really want to draw more than just 3 days I can do that without pressure of drawing every day, but also if I were to feel a bit burnout at some point at least just drawing 3 times a week would allow me to keep the habit alive until I feel much better. Gotta say, it has done wonders on my drawing habits.

The one thing about the goal of 'draw everyday' is to actually get into the habit of drawing regularly, if you aren't already. Sometimes people can get distracted by everyday life, and even if you have the time and energy to sit down and practice, you end up doing other things. At least I found it helpful for me to get into a mindset of 'oh, I have free time now, might as well draw.' But otherwise, I agree with you!

for me it's like training, you don't like the ideia of spending to much time drawing in the start but as everything else you train that will, I didn't draw everyday but now if a pass a day without drawing I get bored, it surely helped me a lot.

I made the absolute best choice for myself in my art. I stopped pumping it up with hashtags, looking for validation from complete strangers. I am completely free from comparing myself to others and being frustrated by "being ignored." And I love my art even more now, and it's better than ever. I don't require randos on the internet to tell me I'm good enough anymore. Not to say I don't still have a lot of personal progress to make with my art, but I know now that it is Good Enough, and I am too.

I was an adult before this social media craze captured everyone so I don't feel that need for that outside validation. It really weirds me out, actually!! But lately I keep thinking maybe I should give it a try to see if it motivates me to draw more, complete more, perform more. I just fear becoming insecure from it. I also fear being pestered by the people I know personally to start doing pet portraits for them, or whatever.

You don't have to draw everyday. Last year, I wanted to improve my figure drawing but most importantly to improve my eye. My figure drawing was decent and was backed up by anatomy, but it was still lacking. I did over 400 figure drawings over one month and I missed some days, but made up for it on other days. It was hard and fatiguing but it was different from draw everyday because it was very focused and specific. What did I learn or achieve? My figure drawing and eye leveled up significantly. Now I have no problems doing complex poses of figures standing, sitting, dynamic, lying down, or upside down. Am I perfect? Hell no, but I understand that it is a life long goal but I feel comfortable (for now) with my ability to render a figure in any pose even with extreme foreshortening.

@@Uberkilltoecheese Sorry I didn't respond sooner. First, you can do this level upping through traditional or digital. If you're using traditional, buy a $20 US Dollar USB light table. How to use the light table if you're not using digital? First, save money on paper by buying printer/cartridge paper. Correct your proportion mistakes by placing a new sheet of paper over your initial drawing. Why? Instead of using an eraser, you can see your mistakes and correct that error with a new sheet of paper. You can do this digitally by using a new layer and by reducing the opacity of your initial sketch layer (like 20%). Honestly, I believe digital is faster to level up. You don't need an expensive Cintiq, you can buy a drawing tablet for $30-$50 which is more than good enough. OK for sources. I believe you should use the same model for about 50-100 sketches. Why? Because the familiarity with the proportions of the model will help you will with foreshortening and extreme foreshortening. Where to get pictures of the same model? I highly recommend Grafit Studio which has very economical photo packs. You can easily get 20% discounts through Ahmed Aldoori or Cosmic Spectrum (both great figure artists). Find some videos on YT and get the discount. If you prefer books, I highly recommend Visual Nude Pose books from Japan. They're not pornographic and have great models with poses that run the gamut from sitting, standing, lying down, etc... OK how to do this. Gesture drawings are easier and you should start with that. You can do thousands of gesture drawings in the same time as hundreds of figure drawings. If your anatomy knowledge isn't great, I highly recommend using construction lines from Loomis, Reilly, and others. The issue with using construction lines is that your characters and figures end up looking the same. The next step to build up your eye and sense of proportion is to just draw the figure using your eye. It won't be 100% but it can be 80%-90% which is more than good enough. Slowly draw the figure. If you're starting with your eyes, I highly recommend a proportional divider (Accurase). There are YT videos on how to use. Use it as much as possible, but eventually you won't need it anymore as you leveled up your eye. I recommend drawing the head last. Why? You can put a placeholder or even a neck, but one of the things you will end up correcting 90% of the time is the head. You either drew it too big or too small.
@Uberkilltoecheese

@@asimian8500 Thank you so much! I’ll definitely look into the model photo packs, have had great progress even with just some portrait drawings using the same figure so i can see that now. Will probably start it out digital since i got a drawing tablet recently as well. Appreciate you taking the time out to share the knowledge! 😊

@@Uberkilltoecheese Hey, no problem. We all need to share info. There should be no secrets in art. We're all on a journey to be the best version of ourselves. If I can save someone time, I'm all for it. The other thing I learned which could have saved me time is to create your own workflow, but don't do it in isolation. Learn from others, but make your unique technique for creating art. Take a little here; take a little there; And incorporate it into your workflow. And worry about style later. You should be a generalist and be able to do any style before zeroing in on your unique style. In fact, it will take place as your absorb techniques and styles from others. You don't even have to try. It comes. I primarily do digital work, but there is nothing like the feedback and precision of traditional tools. This is not to dissuade you. A $20 USB light table (size of a 13" iPad) gives you many of the benefits of digital with traditional tools. It's definitely not a binary case of either or. Both are great and both have their strengths and weaknesses.
@Uberkilltoecheese

@@asimian8500 I didn’t see this till now strange, but I agree! I’ve watched a number of videos on workflow so I’m keeping them in mind to save me some time down the road. And about style I completely agree, I’m mostly just learning the foundation and then style etc will come later with time. And for traditional it has a special feeling for sure, I doubt I can find that in digital, but they each come with their benefits so I’d like to have a wider breadth of knowledge and/or skill. Thanks again

I used to love art, i was younger and had endless creative output, would sit and draw for hours on end every day and unfortunately focusing all your creative output on one thing every day drains it completely. You dont realise it but its an unhealthy habit to pick up on, because if it settles, then breaking it to gain inspiration (watch shows, play the games you WANT to make to learn what OTHERS are doing right) starts guilt tripping you into thinking youre not doing something productive. On the other hand if you keep going with 0 creative motivation, your art starts becoming samey, you dont really have a goal with what youre drawing. Daily drawing with a goal slowly becomes mindless daily doodles that dont really end up being something you like. Its just a very weird cycle. Take breaks everyone, consume art, look around you, draw in your head, imagine things, you dont always have to pick up the pencil and fill the blank page. Your mind needs time to replenish your creativity.

Yes, perfectly said. Art is only as good as what inspires it. I've been stuck in that loop as well , and its counterproductive. If you are drawing everyday there comes a point,(intermediate to advanced) where its not needed I find. The next level is sharpening your eye and observation skills, along with your influences to push your work forward.

I started writing a Light Novel a few months ago. I'm starting to get very serious about it and i'm putting more and more hours into it each day. I'd love to be able to draw, some of the illustrations & some characters myself but i really struggle to keep the motivation to pratice my drawings regularly. I always have in mind the "final GOAL" of me making my own characters design. But when i see my day to day pratice and don't see any significant improvement, i start getting a bit discouraged, laziness start kicking, and then i'll skip my drawing practice again for a few days or weeks before getting into again.

The drawing everyday goal is definitely a self fulfilling failure type thing, because of course there will be a day where you forget or are too busy. But also I notice whenever I miss enough days I start to feel a little empty inside, because drawing is kind of my processing tool as well as a study. So I think waking up each day and thinking “I want to draw today” is helpful because the goal resets every day and isn’t concrete at all. Something that also helps is thinking of a medium you wanna work with if I feel art blocked. If I don’t feel like drawing that day, I switch up the tool from pencil to oil pastel or something.

I do draw every day, but I will make sure to take a day off if I need. I only draw every day because I genuinely enjoy it. I don't make sure to draw for a certain amount of time, and there are even some days where I just doodle a little. Sometimes, when I intend to finish a piece, I break it over the span of a couple days. Doing it all in one sitting can be very exhausting.

My art goal does involve the "draw everyday", mine is to "try to draw for at least 5 minutes a day". I don't pressure myself to draw, or get upset if I miss a day, but I want to have it as a goal so that I'm more inclined to draw during my freetime. In one way it could also be reframed as "draw an hour a week". Overall I wish I drew more. I have a weekly art session I attend for 2 hours, but I don't draw much other-times since I work on other creative outlets more.

The thing I learned with my own journey with art, is sometimes you do need days away from doing art, days where you can just focused on yourself, and your emotions, maybe even treat yourself with a good time, good art progress is only as good as ones optimism towards themselves. If you don't have a good self image in general, then your art is unfortunately doomed to fail. Self care is always important.

The only goal I set for myself as someone who started painting 6 months ago is to redo the painting that I did on New Years Eve again at the end of the year and to do a painting for every unique game I play this year. Focusing on media which I am invested enough to spend my free time playing is a solid way to keep my interest and study many different styles of design, and the thing I love about video games is so many have screenshot modes now so you can find interesting composition and lighting as a reference so much easier. Excited to see how far I can get in 18 months of self-teaching and study.

Yes! My goal is to earn an income with my art, whether that’s through an industry job or as a freelance illustrator. And I’ve got my metric for measuring my goal. Let’s do this!

I couldn't agree more with you, Josh, and I think it's great that you made this video, because these are things that you don't realise until you've set those types of goals for yourself without success. And that's a harder blow to recover from than to just tweak them to better goals 👍🏼 I think this was one of the main reasons it took me so long to start making "yearly goals"... (which now I think it's fundamental for growth, artistic & business-wise) It's just because I saw people make unrealistic goals or goals that, in the end, weren't up to them and I thought it was ridiculous for them to set themselves up to fail every single year. 😅 PD: Oh, and best of luck with your goals! I too decided this year to stop being so sedentary as I was feeling the same as you said, so let's do it! 💪🏼

Totally agree with this! Im trying to become the best artist that I can be and that means watching videos like this one and trying to take onboard the lessons you and other artist put out onto youtube and hopefully Ill get a little better everyday! I draw a lot, but not everyday as Im kind scared of burn out. Sorry this a long ass comment!

I actually did draw everyday of 2019, this was mainly for me to develop digital art, just 45 mins a day and to make sure I didn’t get distracted, I shared the journey on Instagram on a new account and it grew really well and way more than my regular account that I have had for many years, I don’t recommend it to people but for some that asked, I just said draw when you get inspired and make sure you practise correctly, no burnout. My goals for this year are to develop landscape, character and creature designs with entertainment career as a focus

I’d love to draw every day if I could, but my art goal is to try to finish my art quicker & not take hours working on a small detail that people won’t even notice it anyways. I started timing myself to see how long it does take me to finish a project & see if I can do it quicker next time.

I've been looking forward to learn how to actualy paint and to make more finished work . Maybe, if school don't tear me apart i whould like to take one of my projects out of the paper. And of course i need to develop a better exercise routine.

My original goal was to draw every day in order to improve quicker with consistency, but I changed it to just practicing every day and then actually drawing when I’m in the right mindset to do so. Now, I just do about 30-35 minutes of figure drawing practice and then 1-2 hours of anatomy practice. Consistency is key and I like to believe that focusing on the basics and building upon my foundations will be better for me rather than racking my brain to actually draw something. Thankfully I learned not to let myself feel like crap if I miss a day or two or three or four etc. because you are right, life is very unpredictable and anything can happen. In the end, I’m not a pro, so I don’t know how effective this routine I’ve set for myself will be by the end of 2022. We’ll see? 🤷‍♀️

Very solid video! I really agree on your earlier point about making your goals be decided by you and not an outside source. For me, I never posted my art on social media before even though I have been (very slowly) learning for the past 6 years on and off. I made a Twitter account and posted some stuff on and off for about 5 months. None of them got any likes and didn't pass above 8 views each but that's ok because this is just a hobby meant for me to enjoy. The other day, however, one of my drawings "blew up" with a grand total of 20 likes and one whole follower. I smiled a little at that and got back to work faster than ever on my next piece. As soon as I posted it I lost the follower and went back to no one seeing or liking my art. I then spent the next 3 days sleeping 3-4 hours a night so I had more time to attempt to speed up my learning to somehow attract more people. All of this is, like you have said here, not a healthy long-term mindset. I'm going back to being a slow but gradual workhorse that maybe posts one or two pieces online a year. I don't like the feeling of chasing internet points even though it got me good for a second there.

I was drawing everyday and felt terrible, until I got covid and was sick all throughout December and focused on recovering up until today. Art became something I feared and loathed but watching this video genuinely helped with the feeling. It's easy to fall off and be unmotivated sometimes the goals we set just don't work and can put you in a worst spot. Hope everyone is having a good day and gain the ability to overcome whatever is tearing them down 💕

great gotta be honest here, I was about to set one of them as my art goals 😬 the one that I wanna master something altho I didn't thought about it the way you did. for all my drawing years, I've never started or thought about the important fundamentals that I finally realized what I've been doing wrong. I don't wanna master fundamentals that I'm the best at it, I just wanna see slight improvements from the last year me. but other than that I want my art goal is to finally get into practicing in digital art and to be confident to finally post online. both aren't something I'm planning immediately bcuz I need resources and being mentally prepared but I plan by the end of 2022, I finally have started the starting point to my dream of being a comic artist.

Working in a single studio, I knew two guys who had a goal to get into Pixar. Both got in... eventually. One of them needed several tries, but he never gave up. The other sent his reel and resume in some kind of milk crate with all kinds of designs on it. I guess that stood out. Not sure I understand the draw every day thing. I draw everyday. Granted, I never set a goal to draw everyday, but I happen to draw every day.

I temper my “draw every day” goal with just focusing on not kissing 2 days in a row. Even if that means drawing every other day, it keeps me motivated without being overwhelmed

Concerning Art goals: There are three courses I want to do; First one is an anatomy course I can do at my own pace and will start on February. Second one has to do with backgrounds, I feel I don't usually do backgrounds enough and I know I need a certain learning environment to at least be pushed to do them before I naturally incorporate them in my work. Unfortunately I missed registration time for the last batch so I'm aiming for the next time registration opens this year. And the last one of them is seasonal and pretty expensive as well so I'm saving up and building a portfolio for it, hopefully I'll make it for fall registration; if I don't make it to this one this year it's not a big deal. I too want to travel, there are a few events and places I want to see this year; already started saving for one of the trips and will do a dance to the gods so that COVID doesn't get in the way. Like you said, life is humbling and if COVID does get in the way then there are plenty of other stuff to do. I want to improve on my workspace, lately it's been feeling a bit constricting and I've been looking into desk options it's just there are so many it's going to take a while to choose. Fitness has been something I've been keeping up at from last year, sometimes it's hard and I feel lazy but gotta push through it's always worth it! Keep it up Josh

Yo wassup ergo... Things you've touched on this video are very informative and understandable Having to work for a specific company or firm seems to much of work due to too many people also having to also work to get there and some how you have to stand out.. Just end up not being pick.. As you also said it might seem childish but its the fact you've put so much work in just be turned... Personally my goal is to at least better myself with figure drawing and colour then adventure into a very expressive composed art

Not everyone can run, but I agree getting your health better is a great idea. being partially paralyzed makes it pretty tough to do work, art, exercise. Goals for art... well I think to work on my art at least twice a week. I do it to relax and enjoy myself. If I get better then great. If not ... it served its purpose.

my goal for art is some similar to my goal for studying - just do something, ANYTHING, at least once every day. but as i’m building the initial habit, the only veto i have is “unless you can’t”, whether this means i physically/mentally/energetically cannot do it, then i wont. as time goes on, this turns into a habit and i end up achieving this goal every day until it turns into a system of creating something when my energy levels are high, and resting when it’s low. i know how many advise against drawing every day as it can lose its meaning and you become burnt out and i understand, but my goal for drawing every day allows me to become more consistent with my drawing schedule - which is the main focus. i have an oc that i’m focusing all my energy toward so i have a reason to want to draw everyday and soon that will develop into further studies and better drawing routines

Omg thank you Josh, drawing every day is just so over rated in my opinion. Every time I tried it, it just made me feel horrible because I can't ever keep up with it, and seeing so many people encouraging this and saying "if you want to get good, draw every day" made my motivation get as low as the rug on my bedroom floor. So I'll make myself some more reasonable goals this year based on what I can actually do and feel good about myself. So thank you so much 🙏

i think, necessity might be a huge factor to take into account before you set goals. For example for me i needed to draw every single day and look for a stable good job with my drawing to sustain myself and my family, i set this goal on March 2021 and i had committed to that until today, and pressure and necessity got me do it. So be realistic about your goals, don't waste time when you know you have to work.

Watched your video and felt embarrassed about all the artist goals I made this year haha. Even the insta 10k follower thing was spot on 😅 Dumping em and gonna make new ones, achievable ones. I wanna learn how to draw men and work on refining my art style this year. And I also want to work on some surrealistic concepts that I have in mind that I haven't gotten to, as well. Thanks for this video.

2021 was so huge with my entire shut down of social media platform. I level up so fast at anatomy, value and especially composition. My goal for the last 3 years has been to finish something lol. I think this will be my year! I step away for months at a time on paintings. But I realize I paint for myself and I'm not driven by money. So I started going to school last semester for graphic design and it's been making me produce, be creative, and actually finish! I like how quickly I can create in this new medium.
