If you have any questions or need any help with anything, let me know and I’d love to help out! I have people always asking random questions about things like vents or the job itself.

I just started studying RT and I would like a good resource for situational processes. For example, pt is admitted to E.R. 60 y.o. female, acute onset SOB. Symptoms started the night before, but no immediate apparent cause... Whenever I get a situation: What questions should I start with and why are they important? I've heard people say, "Well, your knowledge will increase with time." 😐 Sure. Except I'm studying now. Someone point me in the right direction. I see you recommended Kettering, but I'm guessing that is something I'd want for 2nd or 3rd year.

Any tips on test taking strategy?

I’ll make a video this week on how i studied. It might help you be less stressed because it’s a systematic way of studying. But to be honest, i wouldn’t be too worried about getting all A’s. Literally no managers care about what their employees had as grades. I think it’s way more important retaining the information than just passing a test. And if you have a positive response from people you work with, then you are solid. I had a few people I’ve met over the years that wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a bipap and vent and they all got hired and are now good therapists. Don’t even sweat the school part of being an RT. It’s such a small part of the bigger picture. Sorry for the late response. It’s been a busy week at work.

I’ve watched like 5 of your videos already and I couldn’t be happier about taking on this career path! You just reminded me of a question I had though... @DoldierMedia
@DoldierMedia 3 жыл бұрын
Good question! I would say keeping it until you graduate would be good just because you never know what could happen financially and you might need a job. There’s also a chance that you could get hired at a hospital as either an Ed tech or some other entry level position that requires EMT certification, which would ensure you get a job as an RT in that hospital. But once you graduate, there’s no need to keep up your certification any longer. Thanks for watching and thanks for the sub! Let me know what videos you would like me to make! Thanks for the video! Quick question, I’m currently studying kinesiology for my bachelors and then after graduation thinking about getting my associates in RT. Would that work?
@DoldierMedia
@DoldierMedia 3 жыл бұрын
You don’t want to work in kinesiology? I’ve heard good things about kinesiology majors working with athletes. But it would be a relatively smooth transition to respiratory because you’ll already be familiar with the human body. But that depends on how far along you are in your studies. You could also hold both jobs, i know people who do respiratory and something else on the side. So if that’s your plan then it would work. Thank you for the sub!

Hi, just found your channel! I’m a hospice nurse aide starting RT program in fall this year. I wear hearing aides but can hear pretty good with them. Do you think RT would be a good choice? Hi! Thanks for subscribing! Hopefully you get into the RT program! I think RT would be a great choice! Are you trying to work in a hospital or in a hospice environment? In terms of a hearing aid, i know a few people who wear hearing aids and have no problem at all. I think they bought a special stethoscope that can amplify the audio but that was only $100 extra so it wasn’t that bad. If you like quick adrenaline moments followed by low key relaxed moments then you’ll love rt. But if you want to stay pretty busy all shift, then you’ll love nursing.

I have a question. Did you get your bachelors degree when you went to RT school? Also did you have to have your AA before you were able to start RT school, or did you obtain your AA when doing RT. I’m not sure I even have the mental brain capacity to complete this program. I’m 40 and my wit isn’t as quick as it used to be when I was in my 20’s. Thanks for all the videos.
@DoldierMedia
@DoldierMedia 3 жыл бұрын
I am actually currently working on a bachelors degree. I got an associates in respiratory care. In order to get in the program I had to take almost all of the pre-reqs required for nursing. Do you currently have an AA? Or any of your prerequisites complete? I think 40 is a good age to get into respiratory. At 50 i would probably say that’s too late but 40 isn’t bad. The vast majority of my coworkers are in their mid 40’s and some of them only recently graduated so it’s not too late to start. Do you have any technical schools in your area that way you can bypass community college and work on your general Ed at the same time as your major.

So i initially applied to a local community college. The system they had in place was very corrupt so i decided a better option would be to go to a technical school that was $50k. I took out a loan so i wasn’t worried about payments until a few months after i graduated. It took about 2 years to pay it off so it wasn’t too bad. In terms of work, i worked security at a hospital which was easy enough that i could study at work and they were cool with it. But also i had the benefit of getting to know the environment of a hospital better and now i work at that same hospital as an RT. I also did side gigs of Uber when it just came to my city.

I would say that there’s not much you can prepare for beforehand but if you do want to be extra prepared. A lot of students struggle with ABG’s (arterial blood gases) when they get introduced to them at first. So just getting somewhat familiar with that before school would help a lot. Also normal values for lab results, respiratory related and even nursing related. Everything from normal blood pressure to normal calcium levels. That would give you a huge step up when you go over it in school. Let me know if you need more things, I’d love to give more things that could help you be better prepared. Also familiarizing yourself with respiratory medications would make it easier when you finally go over the material in school. Meds like albuterol, arrogant, budesonide, advair, spiriva, etc... knowing the names, dosages, modes of action and indications vs contraindications. You’ll do great, most rt schools do a good job at working with you. Thank you for the subscription btw! Let me know if there’s any particular video you’d want me to make!

@DoldierMedia
@DoldierMedia Жыл бұрын
I would say 62 would be really difficult on you. It takes a few years just to really get comfortable with everything you are doing on the job. If you are starting at that age then you’d have a difficult time being on your feet for 12 hours. It also depends on the place you work at. If it’s a small community hospital then 62 wouldn’t be too bad. But if it’s a major hospital in your area. Everything is so busy that it would take a day just to recover from each shift.

There are pre requisites. When you’re done with those, you can apply for the program. It will probably take around 2 to 3 years. Summer classes depend on each college. I recommend you to apply to a college and talk to a counselor and start from there.

Choose R.N., NOT respiratory therapist. Physicians refer to respiratory as 'ancillary', lumped in with C.N.A.s. Despite taking the same general education, prerequisites and sciences respiratory earns about 20% to 30% LESS THAN R.N.s. R.N.s and M.D.s ate lunch, conversed idly, and even dated/married; yet, NEARLY never, can the same be said of the LOWLY respiratory therapist. My usual contribution to the 'team' was, " SaO2 is something %" followed by, "ok, ya sure", by the Pulmonologist. 37 years of such 'team work' was not pleasant, or worth it. Further, the nature of the discipline greatly diminishes the areas needed, thus opportunities are diminished. Choose R.N., NOT respiratory therapist.

I’ve been using the hokas i think Clifton 8 or something and they have been amazing! But you won’t have to worry about shoes till the 2nd term. Did you see my interview with the director?
