Once, my husband came home saying that a guy had a horse he would give us for our daughter. I love horses but we were poor and lived in town. I told him “no” because we couldn’t afford the up keep for the horse. Getting a horse is not the main expense. Keeping it properly is, and it was not in our budget. That’s probably why the guy was trying to give it away.

I run a 10 horse barn by myself. I feed, muck, turnout and maintain the whole place. I decided to go on a weekend vacation for labor day and obviously need to have the boarders I care for help with the horses. After over a month of working stuff out with the other boarders they have figured out that it will take 5 of them to do the job for the weekend. I am very grateful for their help so I can take a break. But, their realization of the sheer amount of work that must be done, shocked them. Which is why it took a while to split the chores. Horses are either a lifestyle or a richman's game. It isn't a casual hobby.

#4. Go in a paddock and spend a few hours with the horse, staying off by yourself; see if it approaches or not, see how it relates to you alone. And the most important thing...remember, you're looking for a friend, not an employee, or piece of property. Horses are very much like dogs, intelligent, willing and individuals with their separate personalities. Dont try to find play things for your kids, too many good horses are ruined being shuffled around. HORSES NEED A PASTURE MATE, EVEN IF ITS A GOAT, THEY ARE HERD ANIMALS AND NOT INTENDED TO BE HELD CAPTIVE IN A STALL 24 HRS A DAY.

Any one interested in buying a horse for the first time needs to watch this video about 100 times. He is absolutely on point. Horses are a major time commitment. Horses don't go on vacation, so you can't. Horses cost a fortune, and that is only the beginning, they can eat their weight in money every month. They must have a good pasture, or be ready to provide good quality hay daily. Plan on some expensive vet bills yearly. Saddles, bridles, lead ropes, halters, saddle blankets, and a million other accessories. Remember the personality part! Horses bite, kick, buck, they will run from you. They fight with other horses. ...and about 1 million other things to consider before getting a horse.

I was very fortunate. The QH I owned was perfect in every way. Having learned to ride on two other horses before him, I was the third person to ride him. His personality was a perfect fit for me. He was healthy, had the conformation, was very bright. In fact, he was the only horse I ever knew that I had to explain things to. Owned him for 27 years and he never knew any other owner except the trainer and a brief owner before me. Great with cattle, liked kids, could trust him when he played at community theatre, at museums, historical locations, had experiences being at International Airports, railway and rail yard freight trains, loaded into a trailer without problem. Was good with his three great veterinarians. Didn't like "bully" horses by allowing weaker horses to go to the feed and water with him protecting them, and did two television commercials because he was so steady. The first was done when he was two and a half years of age. Performed well at parades, trail rides, working cattle and very gentle around little kids. Wonderful personality. Plus he had an all-inertial guidance system, heated seats and an excellent memory. I had numerous offers to sell him over his lifetime but knew he would never forgive me for selling him. He passed away from a massive heart attack exactly one month after we celebrated his 30th birthday. Miss him.

Some of the best horses I spent money on cost me 500$ The best horse I own, I traded for a saddle. You can come upon great horses cheap, you just have to bring em back to life a little, it really is the hay. My most recent horse all I had to do is keep her from starving to death, body score 2. There's absolutely nothing wrong with her, papered horse and everything. Granny broke even. I genuinely don't know why people throw perfectly good horses out. I was lucky enough to have two older horse when i was in high school. We had to buy them together because they spent their whole lives together up until that point. Their old owners didnt wanna continue with them because they were barrel raceing horses, but the one got injured and couldnt race anymore like that, still ridable though. Now, they had plenty of room and pasture so that we could go away for a few days if needed. We took care of most of the shots ourselves. They were amazing and I miss them. Chubs and Gunner was their names and they were the best. I hope to one day have enough land to have horses again. That was the best days of my life. They are truly a huge responsibility. The second point is not stressed enough... Horses are complex creatures with unique personalities. A horse with bad habits can literally ruin your life. Do your due diligence before buying. You don't want to mess up on this. When I bought a horse I never knew he was a Crack addict. He was violant, swore at me and beat my daughter. His behavior put my daughter in depression. He refused to accept help for a long time... After trying to rob a store for Crack money and getting arrested, he was forced to accept his problem. Now he's 150 days clean. I'm proud of him🐴🐴

It would break my heart to see people come out and expect their horse to be perfect on a trail ride when they haven't been out for over a month to even pet, groom, love on or check the hooves, or even talk to and take care of there horse. Horses need a lot of attention. Horses need a lot of love. Horses enjoy it when you talk to them. People need to realize that Horses sense if you're nervous or calm. I have 8 horses. I bought 3 over the internet. I had to drive across Canada, Ontario to Alberta, buy a 3 horse trailer and bring them home. I bought 2 from a kill pen in Tennessee and shipped them to Ontario and 3 were home bred on my farm. All mine have great personalities and get along well. I've had some over the years that were nasty and they got sold on and became someone else's problem. My friend told me years ago "that it costs as much to feed a bad horse as a good horse, so get a good one." They are expensive so no drinking, smoking, bad habits for me! Lol.

Thank you brother! My Dad bought me a 2 year old Appaloosa when I was 15... Most folks who I tell this to are like, "you had a horse when you were a teen? That's cool." And it was cool, but for a 15 year old it was a lot of work and responsibility. We lived in Wyoming and we corraled our horses in the next town over (about 20 miles away). Every day I would wake up at 3:30am to have time to feed, water, brush and train Winger before I went to school. I used to feel self conscious about smelling like a horse at school but it was Wyoming so I wasn't the only one 🤠 Weekends I would spend breaking Winger. First harness and ears, then blanket, then saddle , all this at 15. Dad bought me a few books and gave me pointers when I needed the help but for the most part I was left to it. What a great way to learn about life and living. I didn't appreciate it when I was younger but now I wouldn't trade it for anything.

@@joshecret9100 Horses do survive in the wild, yes. But the life of a wild horse is very rough. They are often underweight, unkempt, riddled with parasites, and they fight every day to stay alive. They are surviving, not thriving. People who own captive, tame horses strive to keep them in top working quality so that they can live as long and as happily as possible, which can get pretty expensive.

@GodsSparrowSpeaks
@GodsSparrowSpeaks Жыл бұрын
@@jomoland It is, but one would need to be committed to spending time REGULARLY with that horse. It’s unhealthy for a horse to be stalled for long periods of time. They are herd animals, and grazers by nature. A horse does best when the owner lays hands upon them and works with them daily, even for a short amount of time. IMO, it’s up to the owner and not a stable hand to bond with and secure the trust and working relationship with their mount. If you can commit to that kind of time, your life will change, and for the better. Good luck!

Biggest thing I have learned...Horses will react differently to different people, places, other animals and surroundings. Just because they are perfect where they have lived for years with the people they know, doesn't mean they will stay perfect when you take them away. It's a living being, that you have to train and form your own relationship with.

I got my thoroughbred as a rescue through the farm I used to work at. We dealt primarily with rescues - dogs, cats, horses, and the occasional cow or goat. He’s about two hours away, still at that farm, because I have nowhere to put him here. My boss ran a tab with me of money he owed, because my parents didn’t know I had the job, so when I quit, and he asked how I wanted to get my check, I said to just use the money to take care of Toby. I still go to see him every weekend - sometimes every other - but damn what I wouldn’t give to have him home. He definitely wasn’t the perfect horse when I got him, even further from it when they first brought him to the farm, but I wouldn’t have him any other way now. He’s bombproof, will do anything you ask of him, and one of the smoothest thoroughbreds I’ve ever had under saddle. But it took him so long to get that way, about two years of non stop work every spare moment I had while at the farm. They are so much time, so much effort, and so much money. I definitely hit the jackpot in regards to having such a cool boss, though 😂

I think the most important thing that should be number one is when you purchase a horse it is not if you are going to get hurt it is going to be when and how bad so make sure you have good health insurance

I wanted to learn about horses, so I went to a stable that boarded horses & I paid for a few lessons to learn from the ground up....I became friendly with the barn manager & I traded riding lessons from her in exchange, took care of the barn on the weekends. I did it for 2 years...I wanted to buy one of her foals so badly, but I knew I could never afford it...wouldn't trade those 2 years for anything. Still miss them..

I worked on a horse ranch growing up. I made minimum wage (this was in the 80’s) and could go riding anytime I wanted. There were roughly 12 or so horses I took care of. The riding part of the deal really intrigued me, however, I soon learned it wasn’t a great deal as I never got to ride because all I did was take care of the horses. I wouldn’t trade that time for anything though as I learned so very much about horses. Quick tip that I’m shocked people don’t know about or they don’t believe it works. If you’re constantly changing all the wood chips in their stalls, if you pee in one area , most of the time the horses will use only the area surrounding where you went. It saved me a little time anyway.

I had a horse she was Appaloosa and at 20 she went blind I loved her very much but had to put her down last October in the following January bought Rocker my 13 y/o gelding and he is so sweet I am very lucky to have been given the chance to own him! His only habit is he loves to eat lol and I spoil him but healthy and he was dull looking when I bought him from the elderly lady I have been working with him and he shines like a diamond he is stronger and just very happy and he is a Missouri Fox Trotter! Amazing horse! Worth every penny and we have gone on camping trips twice this year and he loves the trails and I consider myself very blessed to have him in my life he’s my boy!

When I was a child in the 1950's all the Grocery stores had "WIN A PONY!" contest kiosks. I adore horses! Since I was old enough to know what they were. I would stuff the box with as many tickets I could fill out. And prayed! Oh, how I PRAYED!! My poor dear long-suffering Mother ... she was PRAYING I NOT WIN. This Gentlemen in this video explains it sooooo well. We lived in the City, a Struggling Blue-collar family. How could she have ever told me "NO"?

Smart man listen to his advice. Some of us ladies grew up with tv shows like Flicka, Roy Rodgers, the Lone Ranger The movie Velvet, it’s not like that At all. I had horses for over 50 years. The tv and films had many horses trained to do certain tricks. That we thought was love. I’m going to get a horse and love it and it will love me. Most not at all. But most will happily dump you far from home and say see you back at the barn!!! They have a fight or flight defense system with the dominant one being flight. Ride a flighty horse on a windy day. It’s like an amusement park ride. You don’t know what is coming next. You want a horse, spend a year with a good instructor getting lessons. Tell the instructor your plans. offer to help out at the barn. Do every thing they ask, from cleaning stalls , picking up stones in the arena to scribing the slime out of water buckets and tanks. Find a mentor. They are rare and far between. Some are all talk and no real experience. Like my friends daughter who rode a rental trail horse a couple of times and knew everything. I can ride she said!! She me ment I didn’t fall off at the walk. ,

There's also the expense of the saddle, saddle blanket, bridle, halter, and grooming supplies. The saddle, bridle, and bit must be the right fit for the horse.

Yup, when I tell you that it is hard work it’s an understatement. We get in brood mares and moms with babies all the time and you can’t go anywhere unless you have someone constantly checking on them.they all have little attitudes of their own and especially the babies but I love them all and wouldn’t rather do anything els with me time. ❤

Don't forget about adoption! Well-run horse rescues work with horses extensively to mold them into adoptable family additions. Speaking from experience as a volunteer, we spend a lot of time rehabilitating them physically, mentally, and emotionally, preparing them to be the best equine partner possible. And we know (and love!) their strengths, weaknesses, and quirks. Our goal is to get them into a furever home, not a quick sale. We get to know the potential adopter, understand their needs, wants, and skills, educate them as needed, and match them to a potential good fit. We require a foster care arrangement prior to adoption so that the potential adopter understands the joys and costs of owning a horse with a "no guilt" return policy. I both rehabilitated and adopted my little old man as my first horse. We both have grown tremendously. There are many really excellent horses who need another chance to make a family very happy! Consider adoption! ❤️🐎❤️

All true. We bought a Morgan gelding who ended up bullying the other horses and just caused problems. We ended up having to sell him a few months after getting him. The one we got after that is practically a puppy dog. He'll follow you everywhere and just wants to be pet.

Just wanted to add, horses can hate and horses dont forget. Had a new born colt that had a bad injury on his back. I had to change dressings twice a day. 3 yrs later my niece was training him, i stepped up in the stirrup, and when i regained consciouness, he was jumping up and down on me. Busted me up really bad. I have a gorgeous reining horse that hates men.

If I see a horse being neglected I have called the animals police a couple of times. this one guy kept getting his horse back. it was way under weight and it was tied up. it kept getting tangle where it couldn't reach water or shade. the guy didn't even live near the horse. I know he hates me but I finally got his horse taking away for good. I know where it's at. it's finally healthy and has other horses it gets a long with.
Don't look at buying a horse before watching this first
