As Ryan told repetition is key! And I think it is so much true when you learn japanese and maybe chinese because it doesn't sound like other languages PLUS you need to remember the characters. The best Japanese Kanji teacher I had taught her "Mimi (ears) first!" and that when we encounter a new word or new kanji, we should read it out loud again and again and again. Then closing our eyes, trying to represent a square sheet in our mind, and try to write it with our finger on the mind sheet 😂and it actually worked for me and most people. Every student from the school that had trouble with kanjis wanted to attend his class!

I had a similar experience in France. I never learned a word of French, but on the plane trip over I learned a couple of basic words/phrases like 'hello' and 'do you speak english?' and I never met a single rude Parisian or French person. It's incredible how much people appreciate you attempting to speak their language and will respond in kind. I now treat the plane trip to any country the same. It's a challenge to learn as many useful phrases and words as I can (asking for the receipt, asking for food, asking for directions to the airport and bathrooms, how to apologise, get attention, yes/no, etc) and it's always been a great hit.

I can safely say that learning sentences and phrases are way more efficient than learning grammar. I could actually hold conversations when I disregarded grammar totally and just googled and memorised real life conversations

Thank you Ryan. I was so frustrated with my english. Though my level is B2, I couldn't sound as native english speaker, and it's even worst when you need it for work. I'll comeback to my roots when I was learning english, reading, listening and practice, over and over. Now to get practice ! Greetings from Chile.

My way with English language was exactly the same as yours with Mandarine. It was in 90's. First phrases - I learned them just myself, without any teacher, listenning and reading a lot of English language content (TV, music and so on). Then I went to the school for 2 years to get some more vocabulary and grammar. After this my level was like intermediate or so. Then I studied only myself and I talked to many foreigners during my trips all around the Europe. I know I'm not perfect at English (British version) but I can communicate with all English using people, no matter if they come from the US, Australia, UK or Canada. Very good tips - I agree with you totally. Phrases, full sentences - this should always go as first. Greetings from Poland Bro!

This is exactly what I'm doing with Japanese and it's working great! For a couple months I was really feeling that I wasn't improving much, so I started with this app called Anki. Anki is a flashcard software system that uses recall and spaced repetition to help you Sentences. It's a lot more efficient than traditional study methods, and you can either greatly decrease your time spent studying or greatly increase the amount that you learn. So I used Anki and wrote down hundreds of sentences and Anki basically made me able to remember those sentences. And now I am at a level where I can comfortably speak Japanese with people, of course I am still not perfect and I am still somewhat lacking in vocabulary, but I am much better than I would have been if I just studied individual words.

(my level of English is between B1 and B2, so for now I used a translator to speed things up) Personally, I learn English with the help of my hyperfixations. I tried to make sure that my KZfaq would be filled with videos in the language that I am learning - English. and when I gain a new hyperfixation, I rush to KZfaq, where, even if I search for content in my native language, it will later appear in English - and there will be even more of it. although I'm still looking in English) and songs also help. When you want to learn your favorite song, you memorize word combinations and phrases from it. and you want to understand what you are singing - that’s why you translate it. Besides this, it is much easier to remember a word through association through a song - through context. for example, this is how I easily remembered the word “addicted”. when my English level was still A2-B1, I really fell in love with the song “addiction” - and I will never forget this word. The book by Reki Kawahara, the accelerated world, was also very useful - the nicknames in English motivated me to study it further and replenished my vocabulary with several unusual names of flowers.

Looking back, tips #1 & #2 were probably why I got a decent grasp on Japanese (only lacking real life practice). I learned from both anime shows and a travel handbook I happened to pick up. The travel handbook was important so I learn grammar, but anime helped me pick up pronunciations & less common vocabularies. More nuanced grammar comes in other Japanese media like dramas, movies & KZfaq videos.

Absolutely people from all around appreciate when you try to learn their language. People are more understanding then you can believe. However, it is a different story when you are a native but forgot the language (or you forgot it growing up in a diff country). I’m one of those and there isn’t a single time I’ve not been scolded for, “you’re [nationality]! you should know the language.” I could not help but feel envious of seeing others welcome you and be understanding of your learning of the tongue. I love seeing it actually. And it gives me hope and courage to try again.

Brilliant tips!! My own advice (learning Japanese, have LOTS to learn still!) is... 1. Be passionate. If you ENJOY learning a language you will want to keep learning, and it will be a lot easier to learn too. Obviously it'll be hard still, but if you truly WANT to learn, you will do it! 2. Don't give up. It can be incredibly frustrating, hard and draining, but don't give up. Find a way that works for you, use multiple methods, not every way will be best for you. And 3. Be around the language. This one is KEY, in my opinion. Be around the language as much as you want, whether that's through lessons, radio and music, KZfaq, TV, whatever it may be. The more you're around it, the more you will pick up. Combining the above with this tip will ingrain the language into your brain. Do not force yourself, you'll end up getting sick of it, and then you'll give up or not make as much progress as you sought out to make. But yeah, if you love what you learn, be consistent and not give up, and BE AROUND THE LANGUAGE, you can absolutely archive your language learning goals. At least, I sure hope so, because my Japanese needs a hell of a lot of work! Good luck to all. Learning a new language is a gateway to people's hearts and broadens our world views dramatically.

However, I can read Hiragana and Katakana pretty fluently now, as well as some very limited kanji. Pronunciation is fine as far as I know, as well as being able to use basic phrases. Still lots to learn, but I really need get practice with a real person who understands the language.

Thank you/감사합니다!!! That was really helpful. I have struggled with learning phrases and always stuck to learning grammar and words. Felt more confident learning parts of speech than a whole phrase. BUT your right on! And it was so comforting hearing you say “Your NOT going to learn it nor remember if you don’t at least hear it about 20 times” And walk around talking to yourself with what you learned!!!! This was just what I needed to hear. Learning Korean has been a huge challenge to me. I could NOT even pronounce 안녕하세요 when I first started. Just pronouncing that word was a bit of a tongue twister for me. Seriously! You are right also about going to places where you can practice the language your learning. There is a HUGE Korean population in Dallas Texas and a little Korea town like area in Carrollton Texas. I just need to get the gumption and just go for it! I WILL thanks to your encouragement! I started learning Japanese in HS and continued in Uni but I never progressed to fluency because I became lazy or didn't have time for it, so now I frequently feel sad and mad with myself for not keeping up with it because I could be fluent by now but instead I'm still at the same intermediate stage I was 6 years ago T.T And I end up feeling bad that I'm in my late 20s and still not fluent in more than 2 languages and feel I wasted so much time 😢 But ig there's no point in regretting the past, I should aim to get better in the present. I'll use your tips to work on my languages. Cos my goal is to be a translator of some sort lol But your video got me motivated to go back to learning so that I can finally get better conversationally and also to learn other languages I've wanted to learn but was too lazy or didn't have time for. I'm giving myself a goal of becoming conversational in 3 languages this year and also get better with my Japanese.

best advice 1. be patient with language leaning because it won't happen overnight literally if you want to be fluent in a language and you're serious about it. 2. read a lot because that's the best way to attain new words in your target language from short stories, news, children books, comics, etc. and you must understand whats going on not just reading per se, but actually comprehending the context. 3. Listen a lot in your target language from music podcast etc. and it must be comprehensible input meaning content that you understand and not just listening passively cause you will not acquire the language you're intending to learn passively. You must understand the context. 4. don't start speaking till you have 4000 words in your memory bank because the point speaking when you only know a few words and phrases. Speaking more doesn't mean you'll get better at the language by the way. It is via input or enough exposure to your target language and that only happens over long period of time I should say several years. 5. stay consistent for prolong period of time cause it's not going to happen in a month or even a YEAR. It takes time to speak a language at high level.
