As an on again off again Spanish learner, the best I have understood a conversation was in Ponce after Hurricane Maria. Because I was in a room with coworkers who’s nationalities were Puerto Rican, Mexican, Texican, Honduran, Venezuelan, Cuban, Nicaraguan, and I’m sure I’m leaving out a few. Everyone had to speak slowly to understand each other.

That used to be me. I just continue to listen, listen, listen. Our ears need "training", which comes with active listening. How do you say caro en Puerto Rico is it calo
@SinginginD2 ай бұрын
Probably depends on who you ask but for me, no. It’s still caro. To be technical, I only change my r’s to L’s when there is a “lenguadental” sound after it. So mostly a, if theres a t or d after the r, it becomes an L. So puerta, pierdo, despierto, perdón, would be puelta, pieldo, despielto, peldón. Think of if your tongue was numb or something and kind of sluggish. It’s like you start to pronounce a proper r but don’t finish. When you do a proper r, your tongue flicks the roof of your mouth, right? So in slow motion, your tongue goes up, makes contact with the roof of your mouth, then comes back down. The Puerto Rican r is like your tongue goes up, makes contact with the roof of your mouth, and gets stuck there. Mainly because there is a t or d right after it, where your tongue would be engaged again anyway. So the most natural way I can explain to pronounce the rt in “puerta” would be this: Tongue goes up to flick the roof of the mouth but doesn’t complete the flick by coming back down off of the roof of the mouth. It stays stuck to the roof. Then the t sound is made by sliding that stuck tongue along the roof of the mouth to the back of the teeth. Does this help?
