Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Tony Iommi Licks From 1978.
Tony Iommi is widely regarded as the "Godfather of Metal" and this lesson takes a look at a handful of his biting licks and phrases featuring some live footage from when Black Sabbath was touring behind their 'Never Say Die' album in 1978, which also featured a new group called Van Halen, as they opened for them in support of their historic self-titled debut album.
Aside from a brief tribute to Eddie during this lesson, we're also hitting the main focus which is targeting some of Iommi's blazing hybrid pentatonic scale phrases, a look at using Iommi's version of "The Pentatonic Highway," some expressive string bending ideas, and much more.
There's plenty you can learn from tapping into Tony's playing style and aside from the massive single note and power chord riffs that he's known for, he's also a skilled soloist and has been flying around the fretboard since the late 1960s, which has directly influenced entire generations of hard rock and metal guitarists in the process.

What always did it for me was the quick string vibrato, the pick/fingernail attack, the squeaky sound of prosthetic fingertips across the strings, and the sheer massiveness of his tone. If there is something more quintessentially heavy metal than Wheels of Confusion, I would love to hear it. Love your channel, David! You are a gifted player and I appreciate your historical knowledge. 🤘

A side note while we are all feeling the loss of King Edward Never say Die was considered a lesser release from Black Sabbath but it really is one of my favorite Swinging the chain, Jonny Blade,Queen of the dance it was full of fantastic stuff but at that time the end was near and the new kids on the block VH were breaking there was a Guitar World issue that has Tony and Eddie on the cover i still have it now its more valuable to me than ever !

As a Sabbath fanatic (like so much it freaks me out sometimes) and guitar player, I really appreciate that you dig into more advanced nuances of his playing and not the obvious stuff that so many cover (often incorrectly) over and over. The late 70s Sabbath output gets panned sometimes, but I think it was still really great stuff, just different from what many expected. There is not another album that sounds like Never Say Die, and it has some fantastic songs and Tony's playing was taking on a new expressiveness. Thanks for your insightful and really helpful videos. You're an excellent player!

When I was "growing up" I was so into Sabbath. I had a 64 SG (my Dad's) which I still have, and a Fender Champ. I learned so much from Iommi. What a great way to learn the blues scales and minor scales. But what I really dug was the classical segue-ways between songs. It turned me on to classical guitar. btw... love your videos, keep up the great work. I have learned a lot about more current players from you too. I'm into current gypsy jazz, so not much time for the rock stuff. through you, I know who to check out! Thanks.

Hey, David. This was a really cool video. I have always liked playing Iommi songs/licks. They sound cool and yet are doable for beginners and casual players. Like you, I'm terribly bummed about Eddie's passing. If you are going to make an EVH tribute/lick video, I hope you take some time to really think about it to do it right. I know it will be great. Thank you for the hard work on your books and your YT channel. Cheers!

Good stuff to say the least; it showcased an aspect of Iommi's style seldom ever discussed in today's album to tab, which I don't knock by any means as far as having those songs accurately, for the most part transcribed for when I am being lazy in learning a bit or tune, but digging into the actual live performance of the musician does so often provide a more realistic insight to their style & technique than study albums can due to the production process so often involved. So, 😎. And Iommi's work has definitely swung back around to being an inspiration for myself as arthritis often impedes my own ability to do things I used to could manage, but the upshot to date is that as long as I play regularly, it's not as bad as may otherwise be per past times when I took a few weeks off from playing that actually made the discomforts less managable than when I do keep my fret hands busy even if but the ole 'Grip Master' I got back in the late nineties I think it was or doing wrist curls with a 25lb dumbbell. And since this a Iommi bit, I'd add that was part of what attracted me to Django Reinhardt after reading an interview where Iommi discussed his industrial mishap and being turned onto Reinhardt. Their experiences far exceeded what I was dealing with in my frethand's index finger often inability to bend far at the knuckle which made making the 4 string partial chord fingering of the major chord next to impossible. I learned to do a partial barre as one technique as it was hard for me to get the first 2 strings fretted cleanly and I still miss on occasion, but in the midst of a tune I don't 'fret' it😀 like I once did. But, even though that 'traditional' 4 string Major chord shape poses still trouble to my index finger, I've managed to deal with it in a way that I'd say is reasonably well, whether be the partial barre or even using the full 6 string Major barre form. And for solo/lead stuff, I've actually probably come to use a number of Django's & Iommi's techniques even if not fully aware of it in order to manage doing cover tunes and I'm sure it influences how I work out my own original material. The guitar is such a cool instrument, particularly so, with all the neat tech that allows a guitarist to manage numerous tones so easily. But, then the good ole cranked up tube amp on occasion is pretty nice as well; to fell that raw energy is something I think a large number of young aspiring guitarist miss out on too often now with all the good amp modeling stuff available and that could be one downside of all the new tech now available and the newer tech available next week.😎 I now rant...😉

David you're not only a great teacher but a very impressive guitarist in your own right. You're vibrato is exquisite especially that growl on the lower strings. I saw the Never Say Die concert in Philly and we had no idea who Van Halen was. Luckily we were sitting stage left and on Eddie's side of the stage. Me being only a drummer then was concentrating mostly on Alex. Picked up guitar at 32 years old in January of 1992. 🎸 keep up the great work.

Yes, it was pretty crazy. I got my first album, Paranoid, when I was about 8. And I loved all the spooky stuff. Hand of Doom. Before I got into music I was reading Marvel's Dracula. So I loved all that stuff. But Sabbath with Ozzy still had a little of the hippie vibe. Priest changed the look and sound a lot. And when Dio joined Sabbath and Randy started writing with Bob Daisley heavy music changed. Even Back in Black came out that same year. And Brian's voice was very metal. But you can definitely hear the influence that Eddie had on Tony's playing.

Next week: "3 Edward Van Halen Licks from 19__" Speaking of the "Pentatonic highway," I like to use the "Hirojoshi" pentatonic scale, and use it both in the box as well as the "highway" form. I love to either go out of the standard pentatonic idea into the Hirojoshi scale to make things interesting, or start out in Hiro and slide into something more "comfortable," as it were.

Also, I have a question: Has Ace ever clarified how his name is pronounced? I've seen people debate this for quite awhile as to whether it is "free-lee" or "fray-lee." I think it is "fray-lee," because he is German, and I believe the more "German," pre-Ellis Island/Anglocized version of the name is "Freilich." Just a random thought is all.

Hey, David. A viewer of yours with Autism mentioned that the red light on your amp strobes in the video playback and can be very disruptive and distracting to folks with Autism. I'm thinking that a small, folded piece of black cardboard could hang from the top of the amp (with a small weight on top to hold it in place) in front of the strobing amp light without getting tape or anything on the amp. It's easy for me to ignore, but it's really tough for someone with Autism.

Sabbath definitely had the dark vibe before everyone. I feel that they are actually closer to doom with their earlier albums. They have a very blues-based approach. I consider probably Judas Priest to be the first major band to play "heavy metal" with Stained Class, Killing Machine and especially Unleased in the East. But if one looks at 1980 that's the year we had Ronnie with Sabbath and Randy with Ozzy. And I feel that Randy was the definitive heavy metal because of the gothic classical influence. And If you think about it, that's still basically Sabbath because of Ozzy. Anyway cool licks! Thank you for sharing. I've been really bummed out about Eddie. I knew he was sick but I didn't know how bad. I think that Eddie inspired Tony to level up his playing. Some of those trilling pentatonic runs that Tony does are just blistering. Thanks Dave!

Black Sabbath was probably the first pure heavy metal band, and also the first to add the gothic/horror element, but they definitely weren't the first band to create heavy metal music. Many songs from the late 60s could be classified as heavy metal (by 70s standards at least) even though the name didn't exist yet and nobody thought of it as that. E.g.: Communication Breakdown - Zeppelin, 1969 is basically proto-Paranoid, with a template for both punk and metal. Helter Skelter - Beatles, 1968 In A Gadda Da Vida - Iron Butterfly, 1968 Born to be Wild - Steppenwolf, 1968 (name taken from this song's lyrics) Race with the Devil - GUN, 1968 (covered later on by Judas Priest and Girlschool) and I think the original heavy metal guitar player was probably Jimi Hendrix. 1967's Spanish Castle Magic from Axis: Bold as Love is a very heavy song.

Everybody talks about Iommi's heavy riffs, but he's just as prolific as a lead guitar player. And he had a great way of having dynamics in the music, with thematically lighter or cleaner parts alternating/contrasting with heavier parts.
@knightfall9394
@knightfall9394 Жыл бұрын
his lead playing is overshadowed by his riffs and strong song writing, there’s a big noticeable improvement (not a criticism) in his soloing once ronnie joins and every album after that his leads get better and better. There’s some exceptions from the ozzy era, stuff thats built around a theme like the outros to iron man, war pigs, under the sun have some cool stuff although he repeats a lot of common phrases in those, there’s this trademark minor third bend he uses a lot. Snowblind is another cool lead from the ozzy years, a great iommi tour de force is heart like a wheel from seventh star but that song basically is one giant solo
