Scotty I have a 1994 dodge cumins diesel 2500 series, 4x4. I bought it for $900.00 13years ago. It had a failed transmission which I had rebuilt. Over the last 13 years I have maintained it myself as I am a 39 year mechanic. I cost averaged that Maintenance minus oil changes and fuel. It turns out that I've spent about $815.00 per year Which is $67.91 a month. I live in Calgary Canada where we get chinooks, so freeze / thaw all winter with tons of road salt. So 25% of that cost is annual rust repair Which I also do. I'm 64 years old now and I've always owned a truck, this dodge has been by far the best truck I've ever owned. I recently drove it on a 650 km trip and did so on 60 litres of diesel. Not bad for a 30 year old 6000 lb truck.

The car manufacturers need to listen to there customers. We don't want turbos , we don't want maintenance of turbos . We want v6 and v8 . We don't give a crap of keeping up with times we want reliable vehicles. Americans can't afford 65000 for a car or truck

My dad had a 1978 F150, pulled a 1978 boat behind it to every body of water in the South. Camping and water skiing rverywhere. He rebuilt and replaced every part of that truck I font know how many times--except the frame. I know that because we would wash it and have to avoid the rusted sharp spots underneath. That truck always smelled like the ocean and had enough sand in it to be a beach. I miss that truck, that boat, most of all my dad.

I had a ‘90 4x4 v6 and put over 365k miles on it before the ex-wife took it in a divorce. I changed the fluids regularly and never had any problems with the drivetrain. That was the fifth year the Toyota 4x4 was 4x4 truck of the year. I really miss that truck. The only vehicle I bought new.

I just bought a 2019 Frontier Pro4X w/ 31.9k miles. It’s zippy! More torque than horsepower. Locking differential. I checked out Tacomas around the same year: all had at least 50k more miles, less horsepower, no locking differential, and $5-$10k more in price. I am really enjoying the Pro4X.

For the last 20 years I drove a 2004 Ranger and this year I bought my first Nissan, a 2016 Frontier Pro 4X. It’s low mileage and got it for way less than the Tacomas I had been looking at. So far, I really love this truck!

I had a 2006 Ford Ranger V6 with the small 2 back doors so I had some room behind me. I sold in 2018 it was a Great Truck never had a issue. Then i bought a used 2017 Nissan Frontier 4x4 crew cab I've had it since 2018 6 years later it still like new. I often think I should have kept my Ranger until it just quit on me and seen just how long it would have lasted me. Lol

I picked up 1998 Frontier with a manual transmission and it has been a nice rig. Has three minor dents on the drivers side, but on the whole straight. After I bought it I did some repairs. Doing my own work makes it affordable. Things have come up from time to time, but it's to be expected with a vehicle that old. I picked it up after I saw your video about poor man's trucks. Thanks for your recommendation.

Another guy owned a Nissan and another guy a Toyota SR-5 4x4. All good trucks that weigh less than 3200lbs. MPG has a lot to do with weight. Or lack of.

The Frontier is about to gain in popularity because drivers are going to want naturally aspirated V6s instead of those overworked turbocharged 4 cylinders that Toyota is putting in the Tacoma now. Those turbos are much more complicated, more to go wrong, and they generate more heat and pressure (more engine wear). Once the numbers start coming in on all that, consumers will get wise about turbos.

It’s sad nobody makes, Good small trucks anymore and yeah, I know the government had something to do with it. I miss the old S-10s, rangers, Tacomas, Hardbody and trucks young men drove as our first real vehicle. They were easy to fix, not horrible on gas, cheap to insure and could take some abuse. New trucks cost way to much for what you get.

A friend of mine's father when we were teenagers had an early 70s Datsun truck with the diesel and at almost 20 years old at the time it was still trucking along. The paint was starting to fade and the dash had a couple of small cracks in it but it ran like a Swiss watch.

I had a 86.5 Nissan King Cab, 4 cyl 2.4L / 5 Speed, I bought it new, it was a mid year model change to the "Hardbody" that's why the ".5" on the model year, it was still running with everything working when I sold it a few years ago, after 33 years of ownership, was a great little truck

Haha. Currently fixing up my 88 F150. Got new bumpers coming in, painted the outside 1970 Grabber Blue like on a Boss 302. Just put 15x10 Cragars on it, with 275/60R15s. Ive already replaced the lights, grill, all the other chrome trim, and even put hood pins with the cables on it. Gonna be doing the interior with an wood steering wheel, and other wood trim and doing the seats to match. And its a 4.9 Straight six with 5 speed, and only 46k miles. GREAT truck. You wouldnt think that color and wheel combo would look good on a 80s F150, but it is awesome. Ive gotten many compliments on it since putting those wheels on. Cant wait till the new chrome bumpers get here, supposed to be in this week. Ill have about 7k in mine when its done. Only bad thing is, for a six cylinder, it gets bad gas mileage.

That sounds like a nice truck. Ford "300" fuel economy might be related to gearing. If you're not regularly towing you might change the axle ratio.

In 2003 I bought a '96 f150 shortbox 2 wd with an inline 6 and a 5 speed. Can't remember what the mileage was, but it wasn't high. NO frills: wind up windows, no a/c, no carpets, bench seat for 8,000.00 cdn. Great little truck. I drove it for about 8 years and sold it for 3,000. It still looked pretty good. I saw it about a year later at a local mall, and it looked pretty sad. I had 2 '79 f150's before that (302 ci) and they were good buys too. First one got wrecked, but I got 800.00 for it (I paid 350.00) and got to keep the car for parts. I stripped it down and bought the next '79 which was a much cleaner truck. I didn't have to buy many parts after that. I had purchased he wrecked one from a scrap dealer. The mileage was low and it ran well, but the body and interior were horrendous. You could actually see the road thru the floor boards on the driver's side. Good times.

Scotty is spot on here. I had an older Nissan PU with a 4 cyl. , it could easily tow a 20 ft boat and it did at least a dozen times. Ran perfect until I sold it with 130,000 miles.

Hi Scotty. I own the F150 featured in your video. Still running strong and haven't had a single issue since the restoration. One thing I noticed is the AC is blowing much colder than my new 2023 F150 with factory dark tinted windows! Still get a lot of thumbs up on the road and almost always get in conversations about it when out and about. I recently saw a 1995 extended cab F150 with 45k original mi. for sale asking $25k!

That Nissan Frontier appears to be basically the same thing as the Nissan NP300 we got in South Africa, they kept making them pretty much the same up until a year or two ago, my mom got a 2018 model for about 18K USD. The design is decades old, they just added ABS and airbags over time, besides that they're pretty simple and solid. An older model that I worked on had an issue where it kept slicing through water reservoirs - part of the reservoir was secured inside a hole in the sheet metal, with a rubber bushing to prevent abrasion, but if that rubber cracks and falls out, the metal gradually saws that part of the reservoir off, it's at the bottom, so it immediately loses all the fluid.

I knew Toyota was known for reliability... at least the older cars. I wasn't aware the F150 was among the best reliable trucks though. My parents bought a used Toyota Pickup during the late 90s. I believe it was around 1996. The truck was a 94 Pickup. It wasn't a Tacoma, but one of the smaller versions. That truck still runs fine today. The AC is still cold as hell too.

Scotty, I hate to say it, but I prefer belts to chains in almost any application. My experience with motorcycles using belts vs. chains tells me that chains stretch a lot more often than a belt does. (Kawasaki Vulcan 500, 95's version had a belt, never an issue with it stretching or breaking.) With chains and motorcycles over 250cc, the darned chains needed tightened every couple of months. Same with chainsaws, although a lot more often. So for me, a timing chain is more of a point of failure than a timing belt. Now, of course you are right, they do need replacing on a schedule, as does the timing chain.

If i really get on the throttle, ive had my belt slip on my suzuki boulevard, the subsiquent yank turned into a death wobble. Now i only buy chain. Its interesting how our different experiences shape our preferences. Ride safe!

Timing chains don't just snap unless it's a trash car Have you seen what happens in a interference engine when the belt snaps? It can happen if belts too tight or installed improperly too

🎯🎯I was in the process of buying a 2020 Taco TRD OR & happened to see the New style frontier and after some research fell in love. Only had my 22 Pro 4x for a week but it's been so fun to drive. Smooth, comfortable, functional, and definitely one of the best looking trucks out right now. Bulletproof drivetrain, with a proven engine & Trans that was out 2yrs before the body change. Got my 22 fully loaded pro4x with 15k less miles for 3K cheaper than that 2020 taco off road with minimal upgrades. Resale hold up very well for frontiers too!!!

Bought a 2006 toyota tundra sr5 with 83,000 mi on it for $15K 10 yrs ago. I did the T-belt package at 118K. Sealed trans fluid replaced at 120K. Got 177K now with regular oil maintenance and fluids. Runs perfect, not a drop of fluid anywhere. My bro-in-law has an '02 (same truck, same maintenance) 265K on it. Recently replaced the starter. When he sells it, I'm going to buy it!

The BEST sound system I've EVER heard from the factory on a car under $100K is the Volvo XC90 with the Bowers & Wilkins 19 speaker system. 1400 watts. I've heard some good systems but this is really nice.

I’ve got the Aussie version of the Frontier called a Navara. We like diesel engines in Australia and my ZD30 turbo diesel has responded to upgrades nicely. It’s as powerful as any new turbo diesel, without the complications. It’s 23 years old (my father bought it new in 2001) and should go for another 23 years!

Wow! That F150 is sooo nice. I had a Ford F250 bought a 1999 in 98, and it drove for around 250,000 miles and we sold it for over 2000. It had good life still left but we are not mechanics. It was so nice!

Nissan made great trucks back in the day. I still have my now 34 year old '90 Pathfinder (based on the truck platform) which I picked up for $1k 25 years ago. The VG30/VG33 engines were near bulletproof and everything else was also generally well made and durable.

I purposefully looked for gold maximas and I30’s from late ‘90’s and early 00’s and they were VERY hard to kill. I put 325k on a 97 Maxima and still got 2,500 when I traded in 2008 I bought a 01 I 30 and put 275k on before the thing rusted so bad I got unsafe and then I got an intake leak and decided enough but man those VQ 30 3.0 engines were something else. Nissan should go back to that.

I love the look of the Tacoma more than the Frontier, but the Frontier has more power, feels smoother, drives like a truck, and you sit more comfortable in it. All things I wish Toyota had to make me get a 3rd gen again. Nonetheless I love them both in their own way

I still have my first truck which is a 1996 Ford F150 2wd with a 302 V8 and the 8 ft box. It just works. I'm currently working on repairing the rust on the cab and looking for a clean box to replace the old one.

I just got a 2019 F150 with the 2.7... guys are getting 300-500k miles on those drivetrains with no issues. the bodies don't rust. should be top of the list.

Used to beat the crap out of a 4 banger RWD '03 Nissan Frontier I had. Think had like 278,000 miles with original engine and tranny and still ran great and body/frame was good when I sold it.

Had a 95 150 ext. cab xl trim for 27 years and it started every single day. Never changed the exhaust. Best vehicle we ever owned. I finally bought new 19 Tacoma sport. Tranny isn't very good and the engine is noisy compared to the ford. I hope it lasts as long as the 150.

Scotty all aftermarket stereos are the absolute best. I know from lots experience from doing lots of car audio installs and I know from real life experience that aftermarket car stereos will always sound way better then a vehicles factor audio system. Facts

I self taught car stereo installation back in the very early 2000s. Which is why I can't stand these new cars (for many reasons, but this is one of them), but you can't even install an aftermarket head unit in them. The "radio" has 1/3 of the car's computer "integrated", and there is no real way to remove it.

My father had a 2001 frontier lasted just over 500,000 on its original engine and with one transmission rebuild at around 300,000. It was a great work truck. He ended up buying a 2022 frontier lol.

I have a 2016 TRD Off road tacoma. Once every month or two i take it on a gravel road and shift into 4H and 4L to wet the seals on my transfer case. Same for AC, i run it in winter occassionally to wet the seals.

I know a guy who seized the engine TWICE of his (original model) Frontier -he ran it low on oil so the engine heated up and seized. But once it cooled it still ran, probably with some damage. It kept running for years after that.

I have an '04 Frontier with 195k on the clock. It's cost me more in repairs than previous Tacoma's but she's still going... And I'm surprised Scotty didn't point out these aslo have a distributor.

I worked for an engineering company back in the 80s and early 90s. their fleet of trucks were Ford F150, F250, Chevy C10/1500, C20/2500, S10, GMC C15/1500, C25/2500, S15, Dodge Ram 150/1500, 250/2500, 350/3500, Nissan, Toyota, and Mazda. the Nissan, the Toyota, and the Mazda were three of the sorriest trucks built. put 300 to 450 in the bed, the suspension would bottom out, the engine would strand to hold 50 to 65 mph highway speed, got the wurst gas milage, and the engines would start to knock.

The best thing you do for your car longevity is using good parts, even for the AC. Specially when you have the forever running manual transmission. It will save a lot in long run.

I just got a 19 Frontier 4.0v6 2x4 5-sp auto at 38k miles this past week. Knock on wood LOL An unlicensed driver in an uninsured vehicle decided it was reasonable and prudent to run a red light and T-bone my beloved (and rather trouble-free) 08 Ridgeline at 151k miles, forcing me into a car-shopping market that I didn't want to be in. I really wanted another Ridgeline, but pickins' were very slim (and I didn't want the 17-19 models with the H6 transmission which is known to be problematic after 80k miles). And the "obvious repos" 22-23 model years were still financially out of my reach. And Tacomas? All I found were again "obvious repos" 22-23 model years for still way too much, or 05 and earlier models with over 200k miles for still $10k---no model years available in between. It was nuts... people know they're good and are hanging onto them. But some used newish Frontiers were available at various locations, but were still flying off the lots. I will say, the Frontier feels so much different than the Ridgeline (more "trucky" handling) but it's fine and am already used to it.

I owned a 2003 Nissan Maxima GXE. Conventional automatic tranny, not CVT. Best car I ever had. Solid as a rock. Traded it for a 2013 Maxima. The CVT was OK and I changed transmission fluid at 35K and 70K. But the car had squeaks and rattles which the previous Maxima didn’t have. Traded the 2013 in recently on a Lexus ES350, since I was leery that the Maxima CVT might have problems as it approached 100K miles. Too bad, as the Maxima was fun to drive and handled well.

There are some things the "ECT Power" button just can't fix, such as uphill interstate entry ramps or long, increasing interstate grades. Thanks Scotty.

My 2016 chevy colorado has 150,000kms Only thing I have needed to replace was a wishshield washer fluid motor and an evap purge valve. Both thing's I was able to change out in only a couple minutes.

Buying used gets you to the same place buying a new one does faster - plus you're still financing it for 5 years at a high interest rate with no warranty. Then you get to pay for repairs while making payments. Nope, not for me - I haven't bought a used vehicle since 2003 and I haven't regretted it. It's nice to have a vehicle that you don't have to do anything major to other than fluids, filters and tire rotations for 5 years. Plus you get the residual value of being a 1 owner at the end of your ownership.

Hell, I only get 13.5mpg out of my 5.7 I force. And I could care less about the petrol. Arguably one of the most reliable engines ever built. After 16yrs of ownership it's still eating them miles up like nobody's business
