@@OlhaBatchvarov hi Olha I absolutely love your videos. They help me so much with venturing into the shipbuilding hobby. However im puzzled by one particular thing. What kind of fabric do you use for sails? I made the mistake of using linnen which you could easily see through. But the cotton i bought also appears to be see through and does not fit with my scale which is 1:42. i hope you can help me :)

So i watched it again. And i must say, mate is that you are the master better than anyone that i have seen on KZfaq. I remember seeing the real thing in Norway . What surprised me, was how thin the planking was . Only about a inch ( 24 mm). When they didn't have the use of a saw or plane and the wood was so smooth . The planks were split from the log with wedges . And your model planking is really beautiful , you have done an excellent job of it !

Very nice, especially correcting the "mistakes". I really can't believe the level of errors ship modelers put up with from most of the manufacturers, as if it's almost to be expected. If a scale model company like Tamiya were to put out a kit with as many errors as I have in my ship's instructions, they would be absolutely roasted for it.
@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov 11 ай бұрын
This is the difference between wooden kits and plastic kits. Even if you start building two identical kits at the same time, you will end up with 2 different models. Because it is wood - it reacts to humidity, the amount of glue (type of glue), even to the mood of the modeler))) - it can twist, crack, peel, etc. Therefore, it is simply impossible to create an ideal wooden kit that could be built like a Lego constructor! But wooden models, unlike plastic ones, you can restore over time, repair like real ships that needed constant maintenance during operation...

@@OlhaBatchvarov That part I totally get... It's the actual mistakes and contradictions in the instructions & blueprints themselves. On the ship I just started, there's enough of them that I had to pull out a pad and start making notes of them to remind me of what to look out for later on. For one example, on the mizzen top... the 1:1 blueprints show 5 blocks hanging, the photo of what it's supposed to look like shows 3, and the rigging diagrams only use 2 of them. 🤣

It is true that there is a notable difference between plastic and wooden models but in some respects Frankw7266 is right. There are many discrepancies between the drawings and the construction, in many places the construction does not come as the manual says. I am making the San Bartolomè, a beautiful model, but unfortunately with numerous anomalies, for example on the drawing there is a capone crane which the instructions lead to making it another way so much so that the pillar of the anklet happens right on the hatch of the bow deck . Many pieces that you don't know where to assemble. Drakkar short planks are also no good. In short, they are certainly beautiful works but I think Pavel should be more careful in the transition from drawing to laser engraving also because his kits cost a lot of money

Very nice recovery from the short planks. The final accuracy is spot on too. Maybe, to reduce the error of marking even further, one side can be cut freely. Then measure + mark. This reduced the natural error margin by 50%. But than again, no need for such things in your case.

@@martinaalderink7773It shouldn’t for what you’re paying. Not everyone is going to have the tools, materials or inclination to make their own planks. Hopefully existing customers get that sorted promptly. It would’ve likely been a better idea to just had them precut a bit longer then allowing trimming to length because that’s a hell of a lot easier than finding matching wood and cutting your own which is something I’d guess most wouldn’t want to do or expect in a kit. In a kit that costs over $200 and says “The main thing you will need is glue and sanding tools as all parts are almost complete” that’s a problem.

In my opinion, Pavel should not have tried to salvage this kit and rework it after another store tried to make it. It is better to create a new one, from the very beginning! Because this kit is difficult to build even for a professional modeler. Considering all the mistakes at the first stage of design, and then all that Pavel did not take into account while trying to improve this kit...

At 1:50 the final build is a bit too big to fit my (UK terraced) home. Did I read (on SOS) that Pavel might also produce a smaller scale version, that it was just a matter of adjusting the parameters for the laser? I've always wanted to build this but the 2 aging incomplete kits I got on eBay by Billings were such poor quality materials it wasn't worth it.
@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov 11 ай бұрын
Pavlo talked about creating his entire collection on a smaller scale. But everything takes time - test builds, etc. That is, it is not only about setting parameters! P.S. The length of the model is 90 cm

This is a wooden kit - everything can depend banally on the humidity of the air and where this kit was stored. I simply advised the manufacturer to deliberately make the planks longer so that each modeler could shorten them to the desired length...

Before making new ones, I showed in the video how short the planks are. So, I decided to make new middle parts, because they are easier to cut. They were short from 4 to 6 mm. I don't build models with a bucket of wood filler and then paint them like Pavel did on his prototypes! So I need all the parts to be tightly fitted, because the oil will then show all the flaws and highlight them tenfold!
